A Citrusy Nightstand Makeover
Remember the old dresser that my neighbor gave me to that I repaired and painted in beautiful shades of green? Well, she also gave me a cute little white nightstand that she was tossing away. Having no need or space for this piece of furniture either, I decided to give it a cheerful makeover and pass it on to my friend Melissa for her new apartment. I can’t find the year when this table was made but it was manufactured by Bassett Furniture, a nearly 125 year old American home furnishings company, founded by the Bassett family of Bassett, Virginia. A quick Google image search indicates that this specific nightstand…

The Thrifty Six in Lace Skirts
If you have been following my blog for some time, you know that I regularly participate in different style challenges. As much as I love to get dressed without any stipulations, a style theme or challenge just makes getting dressed a little bit more fun. These challenges force me to pay closer attention to the details and encourage me to create unlikely combinations that I may not have otherwise thought to create. Some challenges are easier than others. Some outfits are better than others. But all of it adds a little extra joy to my life. And I know that we can all use a little extra joy these days…even…

Salvaged Kitchen Table and Vintage Chairs Makeover & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #778
Last Friday, I shared the green bedroom furniture that I refurbished for my friend Melissa and I promised to share the kitchen set that I also fixed up and gifted to her. Back in early spring, I spotted this old round formica-topped kitchen table placed on the curb in front of a neighbor’s house for trash pickup. I was really drawn to the spindly legs and the fact that there were five of them so I asked my husband to bring the table home for me. I had planned to remove the legs to use for some unidentified purpose and ditch the ugly formica table top. But after further investigation,…

Antique Writing Desk Makeover
This post is for my mother-in-law as she has not seen this finished product yet! When she came to visit us last month, my MIL was on the lookout for a small end table for her living room so we went on a little thrifting adventure. She discovered this antique desk in my local Salvation Army Thrift Store for $8.99. It was the size and style that she was looking for but it was pretty beat up. If you know me, I love the challenge of fixing up old damaged furniture and giving it a brand new life. The more beat up a piece is, the more creativity it requires…

The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: Pink
October is International Breast Cancer Awareness Month so we decided to feature our favorite (or least favorite) wardrobe pieces in shades of Pink. The pink ribbon is the internationally recognized symbol of support for people with breast cancer. It was first adopted by the Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1991 as a way to raise awareness and promote early detection of the disease. If you are a woman of a certain age, annual breast exams are recommended. I am currently playing phone tag with my local women’s wellness center to schedule my mammogram. I usually go in October every year because it’s easy to remember to get it done during Breast…

Living Independently After 75: The Safety Setup That Actually Works
There’s this moment that happens in a lot of families. One of your parents hits their mid-70s, maybe they’ve had a health scare or a minor fall, and suddenly everyone starts talking about “what comes next.” The frequent assumption is often that living alone isn’t safe anymore and something has to change. But the truth is a bit more nuanced than that. Plenty of people in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s live independently and do it well. The difference usually comes down to how their home is set up and what safety systems they have in place. Independence doesn’t mean doing it all completely alone. It means having the…

Bedroom Furniture Upcyle Project & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #777
A few months ago, my neighbor had an old dresser that she was going to throw away unless I wanted it. Of course, I wanted it! One of my favorite things is to give new life to unwanted junk. You know the old saying…one person’s junk is another person’s treasure? Well, I have found that there are always treasures to be found amongst the junk. With a little bit of care and some creativity, you can transform old broken furniture into beautiful new functional one of a kind pieces. When I accepted the dresser, I had no need and no room for another piece of furniture so I decided to…
