SIA Gallery of Style | “Triumphant Salute” by Matt Beyrer
It’s my favorite part of SIA…the gallery of outfits that were inspired by this unique artwork…
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle and it challenges us to draw fashion inspiration from works of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration artwork that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to join. You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join one of our SIA challenges!

The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. That being said, we would love to see more participants join us for our fun style challenges. Anyone is welcome to play along. Just watch for our Monday posts when we share the artwork, style an outfit inspired by it, take a photo and email it to one of the co-hosts to be featured in our gallery posts. We encourage you to invite your friends, too! It really is a lot of fun and has helped to expand the possibilities of my closet.
You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha styled her Crepe Sari Dahlia Duster Dress from Kantha Bae. She says, “I know wore this Kantha Bae dress in another SIA, but it was just perfect for this week’s art. The colors in the dress reminded me of the colors of the sunset (or sunrise) behind the figure. It also had some black squiggles to mimic the silhouette. I added combat boots as an homage to the soldier, but I wore some favorite L’Artiste boots because I’m me! I loved learning about this new way of making art!”
This duster dress is absolutely perfect for capturing the colors and the movement of the artwork. Love!
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Salazar wrote, “I went with this purple striped shirt because it’s closest to the main color of the painting, and paired it with my cut-out navy skirt and strappy heels for the ‘silhouette’ parts. I also added my arrow brooch to it as a nod to the military theme. All in all, I’m happy with how it turned out, even if it took me longer than usual!”
Salazar definitely rose to the challenge! I really like this skirt and blouse pairing and, of course, the arrow brooch is winning!
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally said, “I started with a simple magenta t-shirt and black skimmer shorts to represent the dominant colors in the artwork. The gorgeous colors of the sky had me stumped for a minute because I didn’t want to wear a scarf on a warm day. But thinking about the sunrise/sunset concept reminded me that I’d recently made a paper bead bracelet set that used 3 sunset/sunrise images (2 calendar pages, 1 magazine page) for the beads, so I added that…which gave me the idea to complete my look with more DIY jewelry related to the linen check shirt that inspired the bracelets – a seed bead wrap necklace, paper pendant, and earrings. Then I popped the shirt itself over the t-shirt as a shirt-jacket and I had a fun casual outfit that was still grounded by the darker base colors. I normally would never have thought to put this bright shirt with black, but I liked how it turned out well enough to wear all day (and my black glasses, flats, and Alice band helped sell the black color through repetition, I hope). I don’t think black will become a go-to option with this shirt, but it was fun to stretch my styling muscles for this challenge!”
I think this is such a creative combination. The black bottoms really make the bright colors on top even more striking. As always, I adore Sally’s custom handmade jewelry. This whole outfit just makes me smile!
And Me!
I layered two purple tie dye dresses with a vibrant purple tee shirt to represent the purple background. Also, I think the tie dye has a strong resemblance to the wood grain in the painting. Because pink is another dominant color, I added a few bright pink accessories. Finally, I anchored the outfit with black and wore my tanker boots to represent the soldier.
I hope you all have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, June 8, 2026, for Salazar’s next art inspiration.
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Sally in St Paul
This was a great choice for a patriotic holiday – the mood/subject was right but since it didn’t feature the traditional national colors, there was creativity in choosing our outfit colors and how to combine them.

Thanks so much, Sally! I really liked this piece for the Memorial Day holiday but I didn’t want to lock us into a red, white, and blue color palette. I did the same with the Betsy Ross painting in July 2024. I liked the painting for Independence Day but didn’t want it to be all red, white, and blue. I really enjoyed all the outfits for this round. Thanks for joining us each week!

I always love seeing the full SIA gallery! Everyone interpreted the colors and movement in Triumphant Salute so creatively. The purple, pink, and black combinations were so striking, and I loved seeing how each outfit captured the artwork in a completely different way.

Shelbee, I love this challenge! The soldier silouette with the sunrise/sunset on wood is pretty special! When we lived on Camp Pendleton, I used to decorate more in a military style. I cross-stitched an image of “Chesty” the bulldog wearing a Marine Corps vest. Charles still loves it and it sits on a shelf in his office/spare bedroom. We have various books about America’s battles/wars and I like decorating with them especially this time of year with all of our patriotic holidays. Fun challenge and I pinned all of your outfits to my Fun & Funky Fashions board plus your main image to Share Your Style (#502, this week) for you. <3 Glad you came by and linked up.
Have a great weekend and Happy Father's Day & Juneteenth,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

Barb, thank you so much! My dining room is decorated with all of my husband’s military memorabilia. He says I can do whatever I want to the house as long as we have one room dedicated to his army stuff! I painted the room in various shades of greens to represent camouflage and then the military decor is in deep shades of red and blue. I love that your Chesty cross stitch is still being proudly displayed! Happy All-the-Holidays to you as well!
