I know it’s a little late for sharing a patriotic outfit, but this is exactly what I wore for our lazy 4th of July celebration at home this past weekend. Since we had planned to just spend the day hanging around the house, I didn’t put much effort into my outfit but I still wanted to feel festive for our Independence Day.

I found this cute LC by Lauren Conrad tee shirt on clearance at Kohl’s a few months back for less than $5 and I snagged it for exactly this purpose. I love the fun little stars and stripes popsicles for some whimsical summer vibes with a splash of patriotism. I usually opt for a traditional red, white, and blue outfit to celebrate our patriotic summer holidays, but I really enjoyed this pastel twist on things with pink, white, and pale blue.

At first, I had paired this tee with a pair of white denim Bermuda shorts, but the day proved to be much cooler than anticipated and I quickly changed into white cropped flare denim and added a pink color blocked cardigan that I found on Torrid clearance back in February. My blush colored baseball cap that says “blessed” was the perfect completer piece to keep my casual outfit summer ready and representing my overall feeling about being American.

Sure, we have had our issues here in the United States, but who doesn’t have their issues, you know? I definitely feel blessed to have been born in this land of the free and I will continue to celebrate those freedoms with much gratitude and appreciation for all the folks who dared to break away from tradition and the establishment that is forever trying to control us.

The temperature really cooled down in the early evening hours and I switched to a comfy hoodie but also needed a beanie on my head to keep the chill away! As the sun started to set on my quiet little neighborhood, all the children came out to play in the street as people were setting off fireworks all up and down my block. We were ablaze with the sparkling lights as the air was filled with the sound of explosions and lots of laughter and excitement. The firefighters were making their rounds through the neighborhood streets to reinforce safety and hand out firefighter hats to all the kids. With nothing at all planned for the holiday this year, we ended up having an absolutely blast anyway!

The fire truck stopped directly in front of our house to visit with the children and give a quick fire safety lesson.

How did you celebrate the 4th of July this year? And for my non-American friends, how did you celebrate your weekend?

Such a cute outfit! i really like that ombre cardigan and I’m glad you had a nice holiday even if it was cold.

    Thanks for the link up!

Hope your week is going well 🙂

Thanks so much, Mica! This cardigan was definitely a good buy. I have worn it a bunch since getting it. It was actually a beautiful weekend here and not at all cold by many people’s standards! I just get colder than most. Thank goodness I have a million sweaters and cardigans to choose from when I do need some extra layers! I hope you are having a fabulous week as well!

Thanks so much, Gwen! I was really happy with this pink twist on traditional patriotic colors. The best days are definitely the ones like these! I hope you had a lovely holiday weekend as well, my friend.

Sometimes when we don’t plan anything, we end up having more fun. It sounds like a great 4th of July! I wish we could have had your cool weather. We had a heat wave in Wisconsin this past weekend. thanks for the party!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Amy! We actually did end up having way more fun this year than when we plan things and have to host and cook and clean and all that stuff. It seemed like the whole neighborhood had the same idea and then we all congregated for a fun fireworks show up and down the street! It was about every 5 houses that had fireworks going so it was a pretty cool display.

Your relaxing 4th sounds great and I love that the fire department came by to do some fire safety training! We had ambulances and a fire truck in our neighborhood too. they were responding to a call that came from a house of college students, who had parked all over the road and the trucks could not get through. It was terrible. it’s so scary when you see those lights and hear those sirens!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Kellyann! OMG, it really is startling when the firetrucks come down the street with their lights going! I honestly thought everyone in the neighborhood was in trouble. Haha. But fireworks are legal in NY so no one was breaking any laws. But some of the neighborhood kids were making me wicked nervous. There was an 8 year old running around unsupervised with a lighter and big fireworks that he kept igniting way too close to people’s cars. Thankfully, everyone here was safe although I am sure that there was firework tragedy somewhere in every town across the entire country.

Thanks so much, Mireille! I was really happy with this pink twist on a patriotic look! My cropped white denim is so filthy, I have to figure out how to get them clean! They are covered in black dirt smudges. Fortunately you couldn’t see it in the photos and it made me less concerned about getting my white pants dirty, too! LOL I just went shopping at my local consignment shop, too, and found some really fun pieces. I can’t wait to share them.

Thanks so much, Nora! You are absolutely right! I don’t follow style style rules any other time, so I sure don’t have to conform to only red, white, and blue for a patriotic outfit! I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend!

Thanks, Ashley! I do like to get into the festive spirit with some patriotic dressing for the summer holidays, but you are right…who says we have to abide by some silly color rules! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

It sounds like a wonderful neighborhood vibe! I’m glad you could just chill and enjoy it. That was great the firefighters went around being a positive presence. Thanks for always leaving friendly comments on my blog posts! I read them all even if I don’t reply. Take care!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Tina! It was really great to see the presence of the firefighters in the neighborhoods. When the truck first came down our street, I got really nervous thinking we were all in trouble for shooting off the fireworks! I hope you have a fabulous day!

I love this pastel variation on the traditional red, white and blue, Shelbee! You look wonderful in pink! Your 4th of July celebrations sound raucous, but fun! I love the fireworks bursting from your head – a great representation of your creative energy!

Our Canada Day weekend was low-key, nationally, but we celebrated with our friends with gratitude for the world we live in.

Thanks so much for the link-party!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Sheila, thanks so much, my friend. I did feel very patriotic in my pink! The fireworks coming from my head is a very accurate representation of what the inside of my head looks like sometimes! Ha. It was a wonderful weekend and I enjoyed keeping it low key. It was nice to see all the neighborhood kids playing together though. It reminded me of my own childhood for a few moments. I am so glad that you were able to have a low key gratitude-filled celebration for Canada Day!

Love the popsicle shirt – a very non-boring neutral. I hope you and your family have a long and enjoyable summer!

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

That tee is so cute! I have been seeing some popsicle apparel lately and I love them! I think I saw one blogger who got a pair of popsicle swimming trunks for her husband! lol! The colors of this outfit are so pretty, too! We had kind of a dull 4th of July, my son came down with strep! He is feeling better today, tho!

Thanks, Carrie! My sister is the ice cream lady (she has a vintage ice cream truck business) and so I am always drawn to any kind of ice cream or popsicle prints. I sometimes buy the things for myself and other times I buy them I send them to her. In fact, I found an adorable ice cream print tee shortly after I bought this tee and I didn’t need two ice cream tees so I sent the other one to her. I love the idea of popsicle swim trunks! My husband just bought his first pair of swim trunks since I have known him (yep, the man has not owned a swim suit in at least 13 years. I was so proud of him for going outside of his comfort zone as he bought swim trunks with pink and purple birds on it! I am so sorry to hear that your son came down with strep over the weekend. Ugh. Summertime strep is the worst! I am glad he is already feeling better. Have a great day, my friend.

Thanks so much, Lizzie! Every time I wear something that is by Lauren Conrad, I think of you! Haha. Seriously though, I know that you really like her designs and so you pop into my head whenever I wear my LC things! It sounds like you had a great holiday weekend as well! The fireworks are legal on the streets here but I still thought we were going to be in trouble when I saw the firetruck coming down the street. But it was all good!

I love your outfit! The colors remind me of the desserts Alec made this past weekend as he attempted to dye the whipped cream red, white, and blue and they turned out such a pretty shade of pink, white, and pale blue. It was really cold here for the 4th of July weekend too and I was wearing lots of layers.

  • Darlene

I love your version of the red, white, and blue, Shelbee! You look so cute in pastels, my friend! Your 4th sounds lovely–Americana at its finest!

Looking so very nice and it looks like that you had a wonderful Fourth. We do have our problems in this country but I would rather be here then anywhere else in the world.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

  • Lisa notes

I love the pink! Everything doesn’t have to be red, white, and blue. 🙂 I’m like you: I know our country has a lot of things we need to work on, but I’m still grateful to be living in this one.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Lisa! As much as I do love red, white, and blue together, it is nice to break away from tradition sometimes to keep things interesting! I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend!

Aw, thanks for the feature! I started reading this post and then
    SHINY OBJECT!

I’ll link up my “patriotic” scrappy from 7/3.
    And a bread pudding recipe.
Because EVERYONE will want to turn on their ovens during this heat wave. Haha.

I can’t remember what I did on the 4th, aside from knotting another Scrappy. It’s all I do these days!
Severo had a gig with a cover band on the 3rd in Sierra Madre, which is a quaint town up against the foothills northeast of LA. There were MASSES of the MASKLESS (allowed outdoors in CA now). I was fine with it when I was sitting “backstage” but at one point we walked through the crowd to find food. I got super squeemish. But did I don my mask? Nope.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Aw, thanks, Anne! I have been less and less squeamish about being public over the past month or so since our mask mandates were lifted in NY. It is so nice to see people’s faces and smiles though! I want to go watch Severo play! But alas, his performance venues are a bit too far for me to travel. I am enjoying all of your happy scrappies!

Have a fabulous weekend, my friend. And stay cool while making that bread pudding! I think I’ll save that recipe for fall.
