Bohemian Fruit Bowl

I love a refreshing combination of citrus colors. Think lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines. Put those together in a vibrant burst of yellow, orange, and green and you, too, can look like a bohemian fruit bowl!

I scored this flaming orange tie dyed dress on a recent thrifting adventure and it made me so happy. I have lost count of how many dresses similar to this one I have found in thrift stores. Although they’re not the most flattering silhouette for my body, I still can’t resist scooping them up whenever I spot them in secondhand shops. These dresses are like the quintessential boho summer dress…lightweight, loose, flowy, and always colorful with unique embroidered details. This one has beautiful orange on orange embroidery covering most of the bosom area.

Last week, I photographed this dress over a pair of really fun thrifted culottes which I will share soon. But first, I wanted to share this outfit. I wore this on Father’s Day for a family excursion to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, New York. On Friday, I’ll share the photos from our little family hike to find the giant trolls!

I wanted to be cute, comfortable, and colorful for the long drive and short trail walk to the trolls so I layered my new orange dress over my old yellow and green bell bottom pants. There is a tiny bit of orange in the pattern of the pants which makes it really easy to create a satisfying citrus combination. It was slightly chilly on Sunday so I added a thrifted crocheted cardigan in avocado green…not a citrus but the muted green worked really well with this outfit. I had originally intended to wear my fluorescent green and yellow DIY wrap, which looked really stinking cute, but I definitely would have been too cold and I would have gotten way more mosquito bites with my arms exposed.

For my extra long scarf, I tied two new scarves together: a newly thrifted bright orange scarf that was part of my living room scarf valance) and a beautiful green and orange tie dyed scarf that Archie got me for Mother’s Day. I couldn’t get over how well the tie dye scarf coordinated with my bell bottom pants and how perfectly the orange scarf matched my dress.

For accessories, I created a necklace pile with my green tree of life necklace, a big yellow cross necklace (recently thrifted), and a large orange and silver pendant (also recently thrifted). I have been wearing the cross necklace and the orange pendant with great frequency lately. I also have been finding a ton of really fun and unique necklaces at the thrift stores and I’ve basically been buying all of them! For just a dollar or two (and sometimes only 50 cents), how can I resist? Especially when I generally wear multiple necklaces at a time (I am wearing seven right now as I type this.)

My green snake earrings that my children got for me a few years ago really helped make my jewelry pop against an already loud outfit. I completed the look with my olive green Furkenstocks and my straw cloche hat trimmed in lime green. Then I added a green flower brooch to keep the hat brim from falling over my eyes.

This outfit brought me so much joy. Every time I caught a glimpse of my reflection somewhere, I smiled. It also made me feel safe because I knew my family couldn’t lose me in the woods! Citrus satisfaction and safety orange for the win.

Keeping it on the edge,
