“The Great Mystery of Water” by Christi Belcourt | Style Imitating Art

I always get super excited to announce the artwork for these SIA challenges because it gives me a creative goal for the week. If not for style challenges in general, I likely would have never gotten out of my leggings all winter long. But when I am handed a challenge, in particular a style challenge, I always feel my artistic muse awaken. For I have finally accepted that my personal art comes in the form of written words and creative style. I have grown to view my body as the canvas on which I can showcase my artistry and as a result I feel pretty freaking fabulous most of the time. And so now I challenge you do take a different approach to your own personal style and see how creative you can be in styling an outfit that is inspired by art.

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Terri chose this work because it speaks to water and the environment and seemed like an appropriate piece to feature with April being Earth Month. Every year since 1970, Americans have been celebrating Earth Day on April 22 in an effort to raise awareness about our environment and our planet and ways that we can better preserve the resources we have. Each year, the planet loving folks at earthday.org choose a theme as the focus for their events and this year the theme is #InvestInOurPlanet because “a green future is a prosperous future.”

The Artwork
The Great Mystery of Water by Christi Belcourt
“The Great Mystery of Water”, Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

Christi Belcourt is a Métis visual artist and author from Ontario, Canada, who is best known for her acrylic paintings inspired by Métis and First Nations historical beadwork art. She uses her brushes to make tiny dots of color on the canvas that are meant to resemble the beadwork of her ancestors and her community. Belcourt places a heavy focus on nature such as floral patterns, insects, birds and other animals, and water. She is the co-founder of the community based Onaman Collective which advocates for water protection as well as raising awareness of the need to protect our Great Lakes and other bodies of water.

As for this particular work, I am really drawn to the beautiful blues and greens of the water as well as the wavy lines that depict the water’s movement. The fish have also captured my eye and my heart so I am thinking some kind of piscatorial addition is required. I guess I will have to cast a line into my closet and see what I hook. Hopefully, it’s not just some dirty old boot or something!

If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on April 20, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

Happy Styling and Happy Earth Month!
