Although summer doesn’t officially end for 12 more days, it seems like September brings out all the fall feels long before the weather reflects it. I get in the mood for autumn clothing weeks before it gets cool enough to wear them. So this is the time of year when lightweight fabrics in fall colors really come in handy. You can create an outfit with an autumnal vibe but still remain cool in the heat of the late summer sun.

If you stopped by last Friday, you might recognize the brown and white split legged trousers peeking from beneath my chocolate brown maxi dress. This outfit is sort of the reverse of the first outfit which had an ivory tunic under a brown topper piece. I flipped them for this look with brown under ivory. I really had no idea how I would wear these pants when I bought them, but they are turning out to be much easier to style with things in my closet than I originally anticipated. I think I need to try them with a color other than brown and ivory next.

On the topic of earthy autumn colors, I had been wanting to add more brown pieces to my wardrobe for a while. But brown is a strange color in fashion trends. It doesn’t show up often and if it’s not trending, it’s really hard to find. Well, it must be trending now because I found a few rich brown pieces this year to add to my closet including this chocolatey maxi dress from Old Navy.

It features a drop waist which is highly unflattering on my high waisted body. I actually think drop waisted dresses are highly unflattering on most bodies but I don’t judge. Wear what you love, flattering or not! However, I prefer flattering clothes on most days (some days I simply just don’t care). To make this dress work better on my body, I added a wide tan elastic stretch belt which pulled the drop waist up to a more flattering point on my actual waist.

Then I topped it with a recently thrifted button down tunic. The color is sort of ivory but it has a slightly pink hue in certain light that I really like. I found it on the dress rack with a dress price of $8.99 which is a bit more than I would normally pay at the thrift store for a shirt. But I bought it anyway because it seemed like a nice neutral topper piece to have on hand. I wasn’t wrong because I actually wore it quite a bit this summer. It has no label and it’s a size XXXXXL. All those X’s made me laugh because I really am not a size XXXXXL and neither is the shirt. But that’s why you should never pay much attention to size tags. Use them only as a guide because they truly don’t mean a thing!

Since accessories are what really make the outfit uniquely me, I piled them on the way I usually do with a bunch of thrifted necklaces and thrifted leopard print earrings in the same brownish color palette. I added my dark brown felt Panama hat and my brown Furkenstocks for a bit of a bookending effect to complete this summer to autumn transitional look.

The transitional seasons can sometimes make it difficult to get dressed and this is where layers really help. You can add them and take them off throughout the day as the temperature changes. Before we know it, we’ll be adding more layers instead taking them off!

    Brown is definitely trending this year. I went to TJMaxx and all they had was brown! Cute look! I love all the layers. Even though I live in Wisconsin, it seems it’s always too hot to wear fall clothes so I dress for clothes by just changing colors. I still wear shorts and tees in muted autumn tones.

    Hi Shelbee! This is a great outfit for your maxinista boho style! I love all the layers and jewelry and accessories. Brown has been really trending for the past two autumn seasons. It is a color that I have very little of because it doesn’t really mix that well with the clothes that I have in my closet. Now it’s getting colder in the morning but still summer like temperatures in the afternoon, you need layers that can be removed as well.
