Monica and I are back with this year’s final installment of Your Own Twist where we are featuring our sartorial interpretations of an Evergreen theme. I wanted a style theme for December that was festive without locking us into holiday or Christmas outfits. And also, as you are probably already well aware, green is my forever favorite color, so Evergreen just made me happy. When a style challenge makes me happy from the start, then I usually end up creating a look that I absoluely love. That is exactly what happened in this case. In fact, I have worn this outfit two more times since shooting these photos last weekend.

I acquired this adorable reindeer dress three years ago through a brand collaboration with Rosegal. When the dress arrived, it was a bit too small in the places (primarily the bust and shoulders) that made it essentially unwearable. But I loved it so much that I decided to keep it for a while longer and see if my weight loss journey would lead me to this dress fitting properly. Over the following year, I lost over 15 pounds and found that the dress fit perfectly for Christmas 2020 when I styled it with green velvet boots and gray accessories.

I was going to wear the green velvet boots again because green is what this outfit is all about. But I really like my black sherpa lined lug sole boots right now. They are so comfortable and warm and great for the slick winter sidewalks that I just keep reaching for them time and again. Plus I also wanted to wear leggings instead of tights for extra warmth and opted for a really old pair in a tiny green and black houndstooth print that clashed with the green boots.

In keeping with the color palette of green, black, gray, and ivory, I started adding all the other coordinating things that I own with some navy blue also making in its way in on my black watch plaid blanket scarf. It should come as no surprise that black watch is my favorite of all the tartan patterns, seeing as it consists of my three favorite colors…green, blue, and black.

I added lots of green jewelry including a green snowflake brooch on my hat, a green bib necklace, and green beaded earrings made by Michelle and gifted to me. And of course I carried my green Teddy Blake bag which I use everyday because, in my opinion, green is absolutely a neutral color. I mean, just look outside, green is everywhere. Even when the snow comes, we still have the evergreens!

About Your Own Twist

Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Monica Hayworth (formerly Jersey Girl, Texan Heart) and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.

The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.

We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not.

Check out the graphic below which has the first six style prompts for 2023. I think we are going to have lots of fashion fun next year and we invite you all to play along!

Let me briefly explain these themes and why I chose them…

January 19, 2023: Popcorn and Movies

January 19 is National Popcorn Day so let’s create looks to celebrate our favorite movie snack! You can be inspired by popcorn or your favorite movie or even create a look that you might wear to the movie theater. There is only one rule to our Your Own Twist game…and that is to have fun with your personal style!

February 16, 2023: Spunky Old Broads

February is Spunky Old Broads Month and it totally cracked me up. Plus I have some serious goals of becoming a spunky old broad one day so I guess it’s not too soon to start dressing the part!

March 16, 2023: Inspired by Sports Cars

March 18 is International Sports Car Racing Day and Monica is a huge gearhead so I thought this would be a super fun theme for her to express her car passion through personal style!

April 20, 2023: All Zipped Up

April 29 is National Zipper Day. The term zipper was coined by B.F. Goodrich in 1923 because of the sound it made so let’s celebrate 100 years of this innovative fastener that we probably all take for granted!

May 18, 2023: Going Goth

May 22 is World Goth Day and Monica and I both have a little Goth girl that lives inside of us. Every once in a while, we like to let them come out to play!

June 15, 2023: Road Tripping

Take a Road Trip Day is on June 16 (the third Friday of June) and it usually falls right around the time that we take our family road trip to Smoked Country Jam. I find that when summer is on the horizon, everyone appreciates a cute road tripping outfit, too!

If you have any themes that you would like to see us try in the second half of 2023, please let us know. I am always up for new challenges!

Gahhhhh! Thank you so much, my friend. This is one of the coolest compliments ever! I honestly feel like it’s my art and my body is the canvas. I love experimenting with different pieces and sometimes wearing them in nontraditional or unexpected ways. I have been dressing myself this way for my whole life so it really does come pretty easily to me now. I can generally just take a quick glance around my closet room and a quick mental inventory of all that I own, and then pretty satisfying outfits come together like magic without much thought or planning at all.

What a lovely winter dress. I love that print, used to have a sweater like that, where is it? Also love the brooche. Looking forward to the goth theme!

I know you already know that I adore everything about this outfit, Shelbee! It’s simply gorgeous. I love Monica’s green cardigan too! You girls have the best things in your wardrobes!

I love that dress on you! I’m so glad you kept it. You look absolutely fabulous. I had fully intended to participate this month, but life had it’s own ideas. I’m so glad for the new list. I should probably take a day and shoot all the outfits now, so I’m not stuck in a time crunch later.

Aw, thanks so much, Michelle! I am really glad that I kept this dress, too! It is so comfy, like a nightgown, and perfect with leggings for extra warmth. You can still create a green outfit just because you want to! Hahaha. I won’t even think about these new themes until the weekend before the post goes live so I admire your motivation to get a jump start on them! I have to take photos today for a post on Monday. I am always waiting until the last minute!

Oooh, thanks, Michelle! We have done Florals for Spring which is different from Summer Florals but maybe not different enough! And I love the Day of the Dead idea. We would have to combine it somehow with our Halloween post though because we always do Halloween outfits for October and the November post would come too long after the actual Dia de Los Muertos. Halloween was our starting point and so we continue the tradition every year! And an absolute yes to color blocking! I can work that in somewhere, for sure.

  • Your True Self Blog

Hi, Shelbee – This dress you’re wearing is way out, man! 😉 It’s got a lot going for it. I’ll bet with alll that layering, this outfit was nice and warm, too. You’re giving me new ideas for how to pile on (or at least match up) my green pieces. I am so grateful that you are featuring another one of my blog posts! It makes me feel that people must be appreciating what I do but just not giving me as much feedback as I need to soak up. Lol! Thanks very much – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Angie, thanks so much! I have definitely mastered the art of creative layering having lived in this very cold and snowy place for so long! You probably do not need as many layers as I do when piling on your green things! It was my pleasure to feature your post, by the way. It’s a nice way to give back and show appreciation, I think. I also think feedback is very low these days in the world of blogging in general. I feel terrible that I have been unable to visit and comment on all the blogs that I love. Although I don’t comment as much as I once did, I absolutely appreciate every one of you beautiful women in my blogging tribe! Keep doing what you do and shining bright, my friend!

Oh that is a fabulous dress and I just love the plaid wrap too. I really must look into getting a pair of boots like yours!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Joanne! OMG, these boots are so comfy and warm! You should get a pair! I bought these last year so they are probably no longer available but I have seen lots of similar ones all around. Merry Christmas, my friend!
