Home Decor Ideas for the Bedroom: Ways to Build and Customize a DIY Headboard and Luxury Duvet Sets

Bedroom makeovers can come in the form of a full renovation, rearranging the furniture, replacing the furniture, or simply updating your bedding to something more comfortable. This article offers ideas for customized DIY headboards to personalize the aesthetics of your bedroom, ways to make your bed appear more luxurious, and other things that can be added to your room to improve your sleep quality.

The top priority for any bedroom should be comfort, specifically the comfort of your bed. This is where luxury duvet sets come into play. Search for fabrics and colors that create a relaxing, calming environment in your bedroom to better enhance your sleep because a good night’s sleep is imperative to your productivity the next day as well as your overall health and well being.

In terms of the overall aesthetic of a bedroom, headboards create a natural focal point to set the entire mood for the room. Headboards can be attached to the bed frame or mounted on the wall. At first glance, a headboard may seem purely decorative, but it does serve as a place to prop your head in addition to defining the general design of your bedroom. You can purchase a headboard at a furniture store or you can take the more creative approach and design your own headboard.

Of all the things a person needs in a bedroom, a headboard is essential for both visual appeal and comfort. While furniture retailers and designers offer a great variety of headboard designs, the choices can sometimes be overwhelming. When that happens and you have an idea in your mind, why not got the DIY route instead?

Before you begin your DIY headboard project, it is important to understand the different types of headboards that have been used throughout the generations and their purposes. In ancient times, headboards were used as a means of blocking cold drafts during the night until the Egyptian pharaohs started using headboards as a sign of social status. Eventually the Greeks updated the style of headboards bringing in lots of cushions for extra support, thereby making headboards even more of a status symbol. In the days of modern heating, however, headboards are no longer necessary for keeping warm and have transitioned to mostly a decorative item for bedroom decor.

Crafting your own DIY headboard requires a reasonable level of skill and experience and is a great project to work on with friends or family or the person who shares your bed. If you have a basic understanding of woodworking and other large DIY projects, you can build your own custom headboard with a little bit of research and patience.

A customized headboard is a great way to transform your existing bed into a more functional and comfortable space. You can add shelves or lights or any other creative spin that suits your personal bedroom aesthetic.

Ideas for Headboard Customization

1. Mid-century, modern styles have long been popular in home decor for many homeowners, architects, and interior designers. The best mid-century modern furniture is known for its clean lines, muted colors, and understated design. If a mid-century aesthetic appeals to you, why not consider this simple, clean style when creating your new DIY headboard.

2. When you think of a headboard, wood is probably the first material that comes to mind. But for a beginner DIYer, plywood might be an easier material to work with. It has unique properties that make it a great material for DIY projects. It is softer than solid wood, easy to work with, and looks pretty fantastic as well.

3. Wicker or rattan headboards are another option for creating a welcoming and peaceful environment in your sleep space. Rattan is available in a variety of colors and can be hand-crafted and woven into many different designs to fit your bedroom aesthetic.

4. A vintage screen DIY headboard is a great way to add a classic old-timey feel to your bedroom. A vintage screen headboard is elegant and rustic and can be personalized in a variety of ways using different fabrics and hardware.

5. Another option is a linen headboard with nail beds. Linen headboards date back to the end of the 16th century as a beautiful and practical way to express your personality in your bedroom decor. The design originates from the way bed sheets are hung on a bedstead from the foot of the bed to the head of the bed, ending at the headboard.

Luxury Duvet Sets Add Comfort

Once you have completed your new customized headboard, you will probably want to update your bedding to match your new aesthetic as well. Duvet sets are more than just a finishing touch to your bedroom decor, however. They also provide comfort and temperature control for all the seasons of the year. We want our bedding to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer for maximum sleep quality.

Duvet sets are available in lots of different fabrics but natural fibers like brushed cotton and linen are best for quality sleep. Most natural fiber bedding sets come in beautiful muted shades of white, grey, gold, pink, ochre, red, blue, yellow, and various other prints and patterns.

DIY projects tend to be more budget friendly than purchasing customized furniture at retail prices which will leave you with a little extra to invest in luxurious quality bedding. I am a firm believer that our bedrooms are worth the investment because quality sleep is so very important to living our best lives.

I have been making slow progress on my own bedroom makeover, but I did get a new set of natural fiber sheets and a bamboo comforter to start. Bamboo bedding is super soft and breathable, keeping your body cool in the summer and warm in the winter. You can click on the images below to read more about my new comforter.

Is your bedroom in need of a makeover? Is your current aesthetic conducive to good quality sleep?

Keeping it on the edge,

Heehee. No one will be coming to me for bedroom inspo.

My so called headboard is one of those wedge pillows one gets after upper torso surgery, with the narrow tip behind the mattress. I have it covered with a retro cotton tablecloth. It works great as a thing to lean against when I meditate after waking up, so thanks Christine (who gave it to me).

My bedding situation is Pattern Maximalist (no surprise). Red Plaid combined with Navy sheets, Giraffe print duvet cover, Crazy Quilt, Blue/Cream Plaid wool horse blankets on top. It all keeps me warm and cozy and the cat likes it too.

I am slowly working my way through the boxes of clutter that are next to the bed and under the studio table.
    Gems have been found!

Happy New Year, my friend! xxox

Anne, your bedroom decor sounds exactly as I would have imagined it to be! A brilliant representation of you and your beautiful personality! It sounds super warm and welcoming and cozy. I used to love getting all snuggled up with my cats in bed. Then I had kids and became allergic to my cats. So no more snuggles for me. Jeff gets them all now. But back to your bedroom decor…I love the idea of pattern maximalist! I would totally go for that except Jeff would absolutely veto my choices there. He is extremely minimalist so we have to find somewhere in the middle! I am gradually making my way through all the household clutter in the hopes that I can become more minimalist like him. Oh but the letting go of things can be so very hard! I will keep you in mind though as I uncover wacky random treasures! Happy New Year to you!

I am always on the lookout for a makeover in any room! I usually have to content myself with paint color and moving tchotchkes from one place to another. I change out the faux flowers to match the seasons…does that count (hahaha)? I have two different quilts I use. One is a floral stripe (years old) from Garnet Hill and the other is an all white quilt (Pottery Barn). I do have curtains I switch in and out depending on how lazy or motivated I am. I keep toying with the idea of making a quilt and have even bought some material (though I think I’m just going to make a skirt or a dress depending on how much there is). My room is my haven, and I spend lots of time in it. I like the restful greys and neutrals in it…which is a hoot! I hate neutrals in almost everything else! I know you are going to have an amazing bedroom reveal any time now!!

Marsha, thanks so much for sharing about your room! It sounds like you have created the perfect little restful haven for yourself. I am so looking forward to getting my room done. I am leaning toward greys and muted blues for our bedroom. But first I have to finish the downstairs rooms! The living room is up next!

I hope you had a lovely Christmas!

Hi, Shelbee – Sounds like you are an able do-it-yourselfer! I just had to commend you. My bed is in a finished attic so there is not much room at the bottom of the apex for a headboard. I still have to come up with an idea for something decorative there…hmmm, now you got me thinking…Thanks for the inspiration – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

Aw, thanks so much, Angie! I am not a great DIY’er…mostly because I don’t have the patience for it. But if I set my mind to creating something myself, then I can usually muddle through it okay! I am glad that I could inspire some ideas for your space!

I love that, Michele! I am wanting to reclaim my entire house from all the kid toys and other messes that they leave in their filthy little paths! Haha. I used to have my desk in my bedroom and I am so glad that I have a separate work space now. It really is bad for sleep to work in your bedroom!

Shelbee, this post came at the perfect time! We just ordered a new mattress and were thinking about all of these details. We opted for a tufted fabric headboard and ordered a romantic, ruffled cotton duvet cover and patchwork quilt to give it a cozy, farmhouse vibe. These are some really great and helpful tips! Now I just need to figure out the rest of it!
