Tom and Jenny by Andres Valencia | Style Imitating Art

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

It is my turn and I am extra excited to share my choice of artwork to inspire our next round of Style Imitating Art. Back in September, I saw this headline in a New York Times newsletter, Six-Figure Artworks, by a Fifth Grader, and I was intrigued. So I clicked. I am so glad I clicked. That click led me straight into the beautifully colorful and wonderfully creative world of 10 year old American painter, Andres Valencia. His Instagram page is a wonderland of large scale Cubist style paintings that will keep you smiling as you scroll. I had a hard time picking just one of his paintings because they are all so inspired. I ultimately landed on Tom and Jenny because I liked that there is an equal balance of bright bold colors with contrasting black, white, and grays.

Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Canvas, 2022

Andres Valencia hails from San Diego, California, and started painting when he was 5 years old. He is heavily influenced by Picasso and Cubism which is very evident. He creates large scale oil and acrylic paintings on canvas in bright, bold colors featuring “wildly imaginative fragmented facial compositions.” His canvases are so large that he often has to use a step ladder to reach the top of his canvases! What a an amazingly talented young person!

I have not yet ventured into my closet room to see what I can stir up for this challenge. Right now we are buried in about 5 feet of snow so I am going to have to get creative if I dare step outside for photos. It might have to be an indoor photoshoot this time!

If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in my gallery post on Wednesday, November 30 2022, be sure to submit your photos to me at shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

Happy styling, my friends!

Keeping it on the edge,
