SIA Gallery of Style | “The Leader of the Luddites” by Walker & Knight

It’s Gallery Time!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle and it challenges us to draw fashion inspiration from works of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration artwork that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.

Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to join. You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, and Marsha on Instagram so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join one of our SIA challenges!

The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. That being said, we would love to see more participants join us for our fun style challenges. Anyone is welcome to play along. Just watch for our Monday posts when we share the artwork, style an outfit inspired by it, take a photo and email it to one of the co-hosts to be featured in our gallery posts. We encourage you to invite your friends, too! It really is a lot of fun and has helped to expand the possibilities of my closet.

You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.

“I was inspired by the leader figure’s drapey dress, scarf, and outfit color scheme in putting together my own interpretation. In keeping with the ‘made by hand, not machine’ spirit, I added a vintage Roberta di Camerino silk scarf with hand-rolled edges (a lucky thrift find in 2020 for under $5!) and some of my handmade jewelry: glass pearl hoop earrings and a bracelet stack featuring paper beads made from magazine and catalog pages.”

“As always, I relied on my memory to tell me what to wear. I picked out this green polka dotted Gudrun Sjoden dress and this striped dress. Then, I looked at the art. The dress is blue! But, blue dress + yellow flames = green so I’m golden! The striped scarf mimics whatever he’s wearing around his midriff and blowing behind him. I even put on striped tights (it was over 90 with real feel) and boots. The real question, however, is why is he wearing a dress in the first place? Hahaha!”

“The polka-dot dress is an easy choice (it almost has that Empire waist silhouette, which fits the timeframe of the Luddites), and since the etching features a man dressed in women’s clothes, I chose to pair it with masculine accessories like the tie (the red color and the stripes are also a nod to some details in the etching) and my monk shoes. The end result is a bit piecemeal, but I’m happy with it!”

“I focused on the teal and rust colors of the central Luddite’s feminine outfit and I added some dots and stripes in my accessories to capture the prints he is wearing. It’s not a color combination I would normally wear, but I love the end result.”
