“Feeding in the Light” by Jerry Garcia | Style Imitating Art

It is my turn again to choose the artwork to inspire your outfit creations! Over the past few weeks since I last chose “The Hallucinogenic Toreador” by Salvador Dalí, I have come across a few different works that were worthy of being chosen for Style Imitating Art but none were really standing out as a forerunner. So I consulted with my husband, as I usually do, for some creative input, making this week’s pick a joint effort between the two of us. (That pun was not intended but it makes me laugh nonetheless. Because pot puns, intended or not, are generally always funny!)

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Well, you already know it’s me! Jeff picked the artist, Jerry Garcia, and I picked the art. Keep reading for some more information.

The Artwork
Feeding in the Light by Jerry Garcia
A Little About the Art & Artist

Jerry Garcia is most famously known for his musicianship and as a founding member of the Grateful Dead. But he was also a very talented visual artist. Having attended what is now the San Francisco Art Institute when he was a teenager, he began a second career in the late 1980s as a visual artist. He produced drawings, etchings, and watercolors that were exhibited at the Weir Gallery in Berkeley, California, from 1989-1996. He had his first solo exhibition in 1990 sponsored by Roberta Weir. Garcia was one of the earliest artists to adopt digital art media and his artistic style was as varied, eclectic, and colorful as his musical creativity. Roberta Weir currently maintains an archive of Jerry Garcia’s artwork

Feeding in the Light is a 1991 lithograph on paper that represents Garcia’s interpretation of the colorful marine life that he witnessed scuba diving in Hawaii. I chose this specific piece because the colors are so joyful and summery. And one of Garcia’s favorite things beside his music was the time he spent diving in Hawaii. I can feel his joy coming straight through his brushstrokes and who doesn’t welcome more joy right now?!

I have absolutely no idea what I am going to wear for this one. I am thinking tie dye is going to make an appearance somewhere in my outfit. Clueless as I am right now, I am really excited to see the explosion of happy colors that comes out of this art prompt!

If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in my gallery post on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to me at shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, July 26, 2022.

Happy styling, my friends!
