Adventures in Thrifting Part 21: Gray Hooded Cardigan & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #790

I wore this outfit a few weeks ago to run some errands. I had no intention of even photographing it as I literally just threw it on to go shopping with my husband. I decided to share it only after a very kind man in Best Buy enthusiastically complimented my “whole look.” Since it features a few thrifted pieces, I decided to share another Adventures in Thrifting post. The last thrifting adventure that I shared was all the way back in August so it was time to highlight some more of my favorite preloved wardrobe finds.

The focal piece is this amazing long gray hooded open front sweater that I found at my local consignment store about 7 or 8 years ago. In those 7 or 8 years, I have worn this cozy cardigan countless times but somehow I have never shared it on my blog (or if I did, I cannot find the post).

The brand of the sweater is Sioni which appears to be a pricier clothing brand carried by Bloomingdale’s with long cardigans ranging from about $125-250. I don’t remember exactly what I paid for this preloved sweater, but it was definitely less than $10. Not a bad price for a quality sweater that I have been wearing for almost decade already. I like to use Sally‘s guideline of getting my wardrobe pieces below $1 per wear and I have definitely succeeded with this one!

Another thrifted element in this outfit is my brown floral scarf which I purchased for less than $2 in 2016, easily hitting the goal of less than $1 per wear. The only other thrifted item in my outfit is the gray beaded necklace with the white shells. The necklace is a more recent thrift store find that only cost a few dollars as well and I have definitely worn it more than a few times already, making it another goal setting purchase.

The rest of my outfit consists of very old wardrobe pieces that were purchased at retail. Except for my slouchy orange tee shirt which is a newer addition. I have this tee in three other colors (light pink, light blue, and navy blue). It is a good basic so I added this rich orange color to my closet as well and I am glad that I did because I have worn in a bunch of times already.

Everything else I am wearing has been seen here before…my chenille fedora, my charcoal joggers, my gray and white striped long cardigan, my brown floral Doc Marten combat boots, my ivory leaf earrings, my ivory horn necklace, my three-legged turtle necklace, and my tan fingerless mitts. Since I have been wearing all of these pieces for many years and I purchase most things on sale or clearance, I would guess that I probably have every item below the $1 per wear goal. So while I have a lot of things stuffed into my closet room, I do still try shop on a frugal budget. I mean, the less I pay for things, the more I can buy, right?

I hope you have enjoyed this detailed breakdown of the many layers of my winter outfit. Adding layers to my outfits really helps me capture my boho style in the winter months but it also allows me to wear more of my clothing with more frequency! So why not wear two long cardigans for extra warmth and style. Or two skirts. Or two dresses. How do you get creative with your clothing? Have you ever received compliments on a “thrown together” outfit?

I enjoyed seeing a joggers look that still has the perfect Shelbee boho vibe to it! That shade of orange T-shirt is gorgeous on you, and of course it’s wonderful with the print scarf. I’m really loving the ivory horn necklace in the last few outfits where you’ve featured it – I think I need to get (make) one myself!

It’s funny how excited I get when an item reaches that <$1 cost per wear target, but doesn't it feel good – and yes, when you have a larger wardrobe, hitting that goal does provide some important feedback that you're not spending too much money on things you aren't getting value from.

Sally, thanks so much! Joggers aren’t really my current jam but I have found myself reaching for them a lot this winter. They are a nice change from my regular leggings. I have had this ivory horn necklace for about 4 years and it is one of my favorites (as evidenced by how often it appears on my blog). It was much more expensive than I normally pay for costume jewelry (around $50) but I have definitely worn it more than 50 times so it was well worth it! You should definitely make one for yourself! I recently got inspired to make a necklace for myself out of rags. It has been slow going but I hope to have it finished soon. I hope you have a most wonderful weekend, my friend. Stay warm!

Shelbee, you always knock it out of the park with your subtle pattern mixing and layering. That is a high compliment when your style is so good that even when you are just running errands your outfit is admired. Thanks so much for the link up, and hope you have a good week!

Oh my goodness, Di, thank you so much! It really is a great ego-booster when you receive compliments on a “thrown together” outfit! I ended up wearing this outfit for 3 straight days. Although, I generally wear the same outfit for 2-3 consecutive days before I launder it. If I could just get my kids to understand how to rewear clothing before washing. They throw things in the dirty laundry that they wore for 15 minutes! Ugh. Drives me nuts. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

That hooded cardigan is beautiful! I absolutely agree that the less you pay for each item the more you get to buy!

Yes, I love this outfit. It looks great, relaxed, the colours are beautiful and the fedora, of course, looks fantastic on you. And thank you so much for the feature!

Thanks so much for featuring my post about Sandals Resorts! It is snowing here in PA and I am wishing I could be somewhere warm right now! The outfit you are wearing would be perfect for the weather we are having. I hope you have a wonderful week!

I think that man at Best Buy has very good taste! I think what really speaks to me is your orange tee shirt. It’s like the foundation of the whole outfit because it kinda sets the tone. Plus I just love orange and navy together. I have some items that have pennies as their CPW, and others that need to earn their keep. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have to buy anything for the rest of my life (except undies) and be OK. But, where’s the fun in that? Thanks for the link up!

Thanks, my friend. I agree with you…that kind man had great taste! And I always appreciate a genuine compliment from a man, especially when he gives the compliment freely right in front of my husband. My husband appreciates it, too! He is big on complimenting strangers as well. I was really digging the color combination with this orange tee shirt. And like you, I could probably never buy anything again (except undies) and still never repeat an outfit for the rest of my life. But that really is no fun at all! Happy weekend to you!
