SIA Gallery of Style | Puppeufee (or, The Circus) by Zelda Fitzgerald

It is time for our style gallery, featuring outfits inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald’s circus painting. Thanks for playing along with us in our art inspired dress up games!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. That being said, we would love to see more participants join us for our fun style challenges. Anyone is welcome to play along. Just watch for our Monday posts when we share the artwork, style an outfit inspired by it, and email it to one of the co-hosts to be featured in our gallery posts. We encourage you to invite your friends, too!

You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.

“I just picked out all the elements from the painting that jumped out at me – red stripes, pink, gray, black, some sort of patterns – and used them to build the outfit, and added my clown brooch for the ‘circus’ element. The result is a little all over the place, but it does reflect the painting pretty well, even if I do say so myself.”

“I have two outfits for this painting…which had looked red, white, and navy blue when I first saw it, so I used that color palette instead of red, white, and black. I should have realized I had it wrong since Shelbee mentioned it as ‘Christmasy’ but there’s no reason not to celebrate July in December if it comes down to it. The darker outfit on the left was a pre-planned ‘precog’ outfit that I wore just after the SIA artwork was revealed – I thought the rainbow striped sneakers brought some circus vibe to the muted fall outfit. The bright look on the right is the one I created for the SIA, drawing heavily on the vivid red color/striped motifs and incorporating some old favorites – the red fish scarf is not seasonally on point but it tied the outfit together nicely.  Happy Nautical December!”

“I was absolutely convinced there were black stripes in this piece.  Alas and alack, there are stripes, but they are red or pink. But, there is a large amount of black, so I’m counting this as a win!  I’m wearing my new Betelgeuse tights from Snag for the black and white stripes and a Rhiannon kimono from Kantha Bae. All in all, I think I covered all the bases as far as colors go! I really love this look! And, I love the painting. I may try to find the book with her other paintings in it and buy it!”

“I built my outfit using the same color palette as the painting-black, white, gray, red, and pink-then I added some stripey things with my scarf, my kimono, and my patterned cardigan. I love how this turned out to be a super cozy holiday outfit! inspired by a colorful but not holiday themed painting!”

I hope you all have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art as much as I have. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, December 8, 2025, for Salazar’s next art pick.
