Spunky Old Broads & Your Own Twist Link Up #53
Calling all Spunky Old Broads! February is our month to celebrate the kind of female badassery that can only come with many decades of life experience. Back in 2002, Dr. Gayle Carson, the spunkiest of us all, declared February 1 (and subsequently the whole month of February), Spunky Old Broads Day/Spunky Old Broads Month, a time to celebrate women still living loud in midlife. The driving purpose behind this holiday is to dispel the myth that life automatically starts winding down for women once they turn 50. We live in a world that tends to favor the younger which often leads to the undermining of the amazing accomplishments and extraordinary…

Popcorn and Movies & Your Own Twist Link Up #52
Happy National Popcorn Day! To celebrate everyone’s favorite movie treat, the theme for this month’s style with Your Own Twist is Movies and Popcorn! I had no idea what to wear for such a style challenge and then we decided to take the boys to see Avatar: The Way of Water on Saturday. So this outfit is what I wore for a family day at the movies followed by dinner at my kids’ favorite place to eat, Red Lobster. I did get popcorn (you can see me walking over to the snack counter) that I meant to photograph since it’s a day to celebrate the snack not the movie, but…

Evergreen & Your Own Twist Link Up #51
Monica and I are back with this year’s final installment of Your Own Twist where we are featuring our sartorial interpretations of an Evergreen theme. I wanted a style theme for December that was festive without locking us into holiday or Christmas outfits. And also, as you are probably already well aware, green is my forever favorite color, so Evergreen just made me happy. When a style challenge makes me happy from the start, then I usually end up creating a look that I absoluely love. That is exactly what happened in this case. In fact, I have worn this outfit two more times since shooting these photos last weekend.…

Neutral November & Your Own Twist Link Up #50
I have transitioned out of Halloween mode from last month’s Your Own Twist into a neutral take on fall fashion. As much as I adore all of the beautiful tones of rich earthy fall colors as they make their way into our mid-autumn wardrobe rotations, there is something really special about a combination of gorgeous neutrals to stand out against a muted fall background. As the stunning colors of the changing foliage become more drab while the leaves lie too long upon the ground, it is the perfect time to brighten things up with winter white while matching my background with a mix of leopard print and ditsy floral. Now…

We Heart Halloween (Tim Burton Style) & Your Own Twist Link Up #49
Four years ago, Monica and I launched this new fun style challenge series which began with our Halloween looks. Every year since 2018 our October theme has been Halloween costumes, making this our fifth Halloween collaboration. In that very first Your Own Twist post, we both styled our Halloween looks separately without consulting one another and ended up both creating fashion icon costumes. I portrayed Iris Apfel while Monica went with Audrey Hepburn. For our 2019 Halloween collaboration, we again created our looks separately and both ended up wearing giant unicorn heads. That coincidence really made us laugh! The following year in 2020, our looks were not as in sync…

All About Hats & Your Own Twist Link Up #48
If you haven’t noticed by now, I kind of have a thing for hats (and of course, kimonos…but that you surely knew already). So for September’s Your Own Twist with Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart, we decided to focus our styling efforts on hats. About Your Own Twist Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style. The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and…

Thrifty Finds & Your Own Twist Link Up #47
I know I talk frequently about the benefits of thrift shopping. But I can’t help myself. It has been a lifelong passion of mine and I seem to grow even more devoted to my focus on a preloved wardrobe with each passing year. I do still buy new clothing at retail prices because I have an addiction and I struggle to resist all the cute new things that are released into the fashion market every season. At this point in my life, I certainly have enough clothing in my wardrobe to never need to buy anything new ever again. So recently I have been only indulging my shopping whims if…

Watermelon Days & Your Own Twist Link Up #46
I have a question… When do you start on red and stop on green? When eating a watermelon! Did you know that July is National Watermelon Month in the United States? With the first big watermelon harvest happening just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, watermelon has become synonymous with summer celebrations in America and a favorite treat of many with the average American consuming approximately 17 pounds of watermelon each year. Now I wonder if that’s 17 pounds of the fleshy fruity center or if that just means 17 pounds of watermelon including the rind that I toss in the trash. Did you know that the rind…

Celebrate Pride & Your Own Twist Link Up #45
Every year in the United States as well as many other countries in the world, the month of June is recognized as Pride Month, a celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community in honor of the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan on June 28, 1969, when a police bust on a gay bar became violent and the gay patrons as well as neighborhood residents fought back. This event is considered the transformation point for the gay liberation movement with the first gay pride marches taking place in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and San Francisco on June 28, 1970, to mark the first anniversary of the…

Star Wars & Your Own Twist Link Up #44
Star Wars Day was celebrated two weeks ago on May 4 by Star Wars fans in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other nations around the world. The inspiration for choosing May 4 as the official Star Wars Day celebration comes from the popular line used by Jedi Masters in the Star Wars movies. “May the force be with you” has been punned right into the official Star Wars Day greeting, “May the fourth be with you”. Since the release of the first Star Wars film in 1977, fans became so obsessed that May 4 quickly caught on as the unofficial day for celebrating all things Star…
