Star Wars Day was celebrated two weeks ago on May 4 by Star Wars fans in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other nations around the world. The inspiration for choosing May 4 as the official Star Wars Day celebration comes from the popular line used by Jedi Masters in the Star Wars movies. “May the force be with you” has been punned right into the official Star Wars Day greeting, “May the fourth be with you”.

Since the release of the first Star Wars film in 1977, fans became so obsessed that May 4 quickly caught on as the unofficial day for celebrating all things Star Wars. It remained “unofficial” for decades until California lawmakers voted to officially declare May 4 as Star Wars Day in 2019 in honor of Disneyland’s opening of Galaxy’s Edge.

Well, you know I am not one to be bound by a single date on the calendar for celebrating things. I will celebrate what I want when I want regardless of calendar dates. In fact, I am a huge advocate for month long celebrations of things. Life doesn’t always allow us to stick to scheduled events, even ones that have been firmly cemented on calendars for millennia.

So in the tradition of birth-month celebrations, we are also celebrating Star Wars Month instead of Star Wars Day. Naturally, Star Wars Month would fall in the same month as Star Wars Day, but there is more significance to the month of May than that. Star Wars creator George Lucas was born on May 14, 1944, so he certainly understands how awesome May is for celebrating things. Also, the original Star Wars film premiered on May 25, 1977, with 6 of the subsequent Star Wars films also premiering in the month of May.

Since we are celebrating all month long, Monica and I are bringing you our Star Wars inspired outfits for this month edition of Your Own Twist.

You might already know that I am a giant space geek and while I enjoy the Star Wars films, I much prefer Space Balls over Star Wars. I don’t collect Star Wars memorabilia and I have not watched every film in its entirety. But I know enough to know that I am fan enough to celebrate Star Wars Month if I want!

I own one Star Wars tee shirt that I hijacked a few years ago from Jeff’s donate pile. I had considered styling that again except for the fact that it is buried in some giant bin of not-worn-enough graphic tees that I really need to go through. But I was definitely not motivated enough to go through it for this post, which is fine because Nancy “made” me go shopping for our most recent Thrifty Six ballerina theme and I found a whole bunch of really cute Zara pieces, new with tags, including this adorable poofy white tiered dress that has all sorts of Princess Leia vibes.

I added my white combat boots because they are the closest thing I own to the Princess’s space boots and I accessorized with some simple space inspired jewelry. I tried belting my dress in a similar fashion to Princess Leia and it looked crazy cute but the effect was much more western inspired than space inspired and will probably look amazing with cowgirl boots instead of combat boots. But Princess Leia would doubtfully wear cowgirl boots.

I considered using a gun in my photos like I did a few years back for my End of the World post with the Fab 40s in 2018. But it definitely feels a little weird posing in public places with a weapon in hand. Especially in these crazy times. So I opted out of that idea.

I also attempted to put my hair in Leia “cinnamon buns” but I failed so miserably that I had to give up that idea. I finally got my hair cut for the first time in two years and I ended up having to lose about 5 inches of length due to split ends and color damage. I am loving how healthy it looks now but I definitely felt the shock of losing 5 inches. The only thing that kept me from crying over it is that it should only take a year to grow that much length back again. And I am so very pleased with what my amazing stylist Cinder of Classic DesignsSalon did to help my hair. It’s probably my favorite hair cut ever even though I almost cried! I loved it so much that I took a whole bunch of selfies on hair cut day.

And that’s a wrap, my friends. I kept my outfit simple as one might if we all lived in space. And I really liked the overall look in the end. Do you celebrate Star Wars Day or Month? What do you do to celebrate?

Be sure to hop on over to Monica’s post to see how she and adorable baby Scarlett have dressed up for Star Wars month!

About Your Own Twist

Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.

The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.

We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.

We used to celebrate May the 4th each homeschooling year with a whole day of themed Star Wars activities, books, and snacks. I definitely got princess Laya vibes from your dress!

Oh, how fun, Joanne! I bet your kids loved Star Wars Day! Princess Leia’s dress got me thinking about all of the iconic white dresses that inspire me…like the ones worn by Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Sharon Stone. A little white dress definitely has some sort of magic power, doesn’t it?!

Awww…, thanks so much for the feature! I so appreciate it. I love your Star Wires inspired outfit! Such a pretty dress, and the white combat boots are awesome. I couldn’t get my shit together to participate. I considered my long white dress, but I’d just styled it a few weeks back… Anyway, I’m marking the new themes on my calendar!

Thank you, Michelle! I am loving this dress so much! I think it will be a great festival dress with my new rope sandals! Wait until you see these awesome sandals. I think you will love them! I ordered two pairs, had them shipped to NY from NC, and then I sent a pair back to Becca in NC! I think I need to start a rope sandal trend. They would be great with your long white dress, too. Actually, I think the rope sandals would be great with just about anything! I know I totally went on a tangent there, but that’s because I did a wake and bake this morning! Oh wait, I do that most mornings. Haha

Thanks so much, Kathrine! That sounds like an amazing way to celebrate your son’s birthday! How cool that the Symphony Orchestra is playing the Star Wars music for the film! I look forward to reading about that experience. I hope you have the most wonderful time!

Mica, thanks so much! This dress is going to be great for festivals and other summer outings! I am excited to restyle it in a few different ways…cowgirl boots, sandals, and sneakers would all be so cute with it!

Love the white dress for summer, and your hair looks great. I always think it’s nice to get a haircut you’re happy with. It can make you feel so good

Oh, Shelbee, this is such a fun post…but I kept reading to discover where in the world you were taking those photos! That was the perfect backdrop…even for a zombie shoot! Love that white dress! Why is it everyone is finding these awesome dresses, and I can’t find one? Well, it’s probably because my eye keeps getting drawn to something else! My SIL loves Star Wars. It has become a tradition for me to buy him a Star Wars tee every year for Christmas. This year, I also got him Star Wars pjs! I remember going to the first one, maybe watched the second, and opted out of every other one! I do like Star Trek but not the movies. I think I just can’t keep my attention focused enough on all of the battles that have to take place! To this day, I don’t know which is R2D2 and which is C3PO! Shame on me! Thanks for the link party!

Oh my goodness, Marsha, you are so funny! So these photos were taken at one of my favorite spots…it’s an old abandoned WWII tank factory and people always dump their trash back there, which drives me crazy, but it does make for a great background sometimes. They are renovating it right now into something else because it was all closed off with all sorts of building supplies lying around. There has been a church housed in the back of it for years that appears to be in operation except I have never seen any vehicles or anything back there. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this spot!

By the way, R2D2 is the little white one and C3PO is the tall gold one! Haha.

I’m definitely getting the Princess Leia vibes! I was wondering about the hair, but then I saw that part. Somedays hair just doesn’t cooperate, haha!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Alexandra! My hair absolutely was not cooperating. It was really humid that day, too, so the frizzies were out of control when I had it in two pigtails before I even attempted the buns. Letting it fly free was way better for me!

What a beautiful dress! It would be perfect for our upcoming “Stylish Monday” challenge “Coastal Grandma”. Thanks for the party and thanks for joining “Ageless Style” this month.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Amy! I have no idea yet what to wear for the coastal Grandma theme, but I have a few white dresses that would work. Actually, my outfit that I am sharing tomorrow would be so perfect but I already have it planned for tomorrow. Haha. So I will come up with something new and different!
