The Thrifty Six in Summer Sparkle

For last month’s Thrifty Six challenge, Emma had us all style outfits suitable for summer birthday celebrations. And now Jane is taking special occasion outfits to the next level with her choice for August…Summer Sparkle.
While sparkles are often reserved for special occasions, there are no actual rules that say you can’t wear some sparkle whenever and wherever you want. In fact, “casual sequins” are apparently a fall 2026 fashion trend that is sparkling the runways and dazzling street styles in our most fashion forward cities.
Of course, not all sparkles are created equal. And sometimes less is more. Being a maximalist to my core, I rarely adhere to a less is more idealogy but for this Summer Sparkle challenge, it seemed to be a fitting aesthetic. Let the sparkles sparkle without the distractions of too many layers and accessories.

I have a few vastly different sparkly items that I found secondhand that would have worked for this thrifty style challenge, but I decided to restyle this recently thrifted sequined dress. I purchased this white off the shoulder sequined dress a few months ago for a Songful Style challenge. It’s not a dress that is my typical style, but I really liked the wrap front for concealing my menopause belly and the unique off one shoulder style. It also was new with the tags still on it. So for $7.99, it seemed worth it.
For my Songful Style outfit, I wore the dress exactly as it was intended to be worn…as a dress. I maybe styled it a little unconventionally, but I still wore it like a wrap dress.
For this thrifty challenge, I decided to think outside the box of wearing clothing according to its assigned category. Just like some shirts can be worn as dresses, some dresses can be worn as shirts.

Transforming this sequined dress into a tunic length top was really simple. I just took those two wrap pieces and tied them around my neck instead of my waist. It not only created a funky criss cross drapey front but it also helped to hike up the hem to a shirt length. To make the hemline a bit shorter still, I just folded it underneath itself. The sequins have a tendency to catch on themselves (and my hair) which helped keep the hem rolled up without having to secure it with anything.
I liked the idea of a white monochromatic outfit for this Summer Sparkle theme, so I added a pair of new white linen trousers. I bought these pants on clearance at the end of last summer and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to wear them. They are so good. Extra baggy with a drawstring waist, very long, and lightweight but with some sturdiness to the fabric.
I adhered to the less is more standard when choosing my accessories for this look. I pulled out a very old pair of sparkling strappy sandals which sadly are falling apart and may have to be retired permanently. Then I added some big rhinestone statement earrings and a sparkly butterfly barrette to my hair. The barrette kept flipping the wrong way during the photoshoot, but it did manage to stay in place in a few of the pictures. Finally, I added a black headband with some feathers and some sparkly bits, but unfortunately it really blended in with my hair so it’s hardly visible.

I felt really fancy in this Summer Sparkle outfit but I doubt I would wear it for any occasion that might last beyond an hour or two. It required a bit more fussing than I prefer. And a pretty outfit can suddenly lose its appeal if you have to constantly be tugging and pulling and adjusting it.
While all of my adjustments to the dress to make it a tunic stayed in place fairly well, the darn sequins were a major problem. Every time I moved my head, my hair would get caught in the sequins and the pulling was not very comfortable at all! I suppose I could resolve that issue by wearing my hair pulled up but then that causes a different comfort issue as I tend to get headaches if I pile all of my hair on top of my head. The long side braid is my go-to because it is the most comfortable and the most practical for my daily lifestyle.
Although I likely would not wear this outfit in a real life scenario, I sure did have fun playing dress up for this round with the Thrifty Six!

It’s an occasion dress from South Asia and it’s a sight to behold – I’ve had to turn down the volume by adding denim, but I do love the juxtaposition of the two opposing fabrics.
However, what the eye sees, the camera does not – I’m sad to say that my effervescence completely eludes these pictures…
…so, you’ll just have to take my word for it, IRL this dress is beyond sparkly, it’s a spectacular spangle-fest of epic proportions!!!”

And Me!

I hope you have enjoyed all of these sparkling outfits for summer! If you would like to see more preloved outfits created by this budget- and environmentally-friendly group, please stop back on September 21, 2026, to see how we style Jodie’s next prompt…Maxis! I’m thinking this could be any maxi length garment from dresses to skirts to dusters and coats. I don’t know what I’ll be wearing yet, but until then, happy thrifting…and styling!
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee
