The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: Ballet Flats

Welcome to The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book!

The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book is a monthly series hosted by Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style and myself. Every month, we invite you to share a photo or two of your Good (or Bad) Buy items that fit the stated theme. We ask that you also provide a short description explaining if the item you are sharing was a Good Buy or one that you will be saying Good-Bye to (formerly known as Bad Buys). Nancy and I will both publish a round up post featuring all of the submissions on the 15th of each month.

Anyone who would like to participate and be featured can send us their photos with a short description via email. You do not have to be a blogger to join. Anyone is welcome! We will give you the theme for the next month at the conclusion of each post. Photos will be due to us by the 10th of the month.

The theme for April is Ballet Flats, also called Ballerinas. They are mostly flat but some ballet style shoes can have a slight heel. Maybe they are called something different with a slight heel, but I think they still work for our purposes here…which is simply to share our styles and have fun. No strict rules are necessary in this place!

*If you sent me a photo, but do not see it in my post, be sure to check Nancy’s post. If you don’t see your photo on either post, please let us know right away and we will add it. Sometimes the submissions can get lost in the shuffle.

“I can only imagine ballerinas under jeans or like how I wore it on my blog. So ladies, give me some inspiration here please. I call this my Parisian chic style. Simple, yet stylish and elegant. Of course the ballerinas do all the hard work here! I bought this pair especially for this series as I didn’t have any ballerinas. So I cannot decide yet if they are a Good Buy or a Good-Bye. But I think it will be the first!”

“I’ve had these ballet flats for over 5 years and they’re the only pair that I own. I hadn’t worn them much recently but I’ve been trying to rectify that. I wore them in two blog posts last month and I plan to keep them in rotation this Spring.”

“Ballet flats are a cornerstone of my personal style that I always enjoy putting into regular rotation once the warm spring weather arrives! My orchid Born flats are a Good Buy with 32 wears and a cost per wear of $0.78.  I have already worn them twice this spring.”

“I have loads of flats but very few are ballet style. I hope some of these meet the requirements of the topic ballet flats. Oh by the way, I still have all of these.”

“I think this is the first time I’ve submitted a Good-bye instead of a good buy. Granted, I did wear these ballet flats a lot and do consider them a good buy, but when I had to downsize, I did get rid of them because they are too basic, and I like being extra now. This photo is from 2015 (this post) and I still have the scarf and sweater at least!!”

“I got these on Poshmark. It didn’t take me long to relist them. They missed the mark! Ballet flats are not for me, no matter how taste the rainbow they may be!”

And Me!
“These velvet ballet flats were an Okay Buy. They are tolerable as far as ballet flats go and they have come in handy over the years. They are from Payless from years ago. Payless closed all of their U.S. stores in 2019 so I have had these for at least 4 years. I probably paid less than $10 for them which puts them in the Okay Buy category. If I had paid any more than that, I would call them a Bad Buy, for sure. Like Anne, ballet flats in general are not for me. But I have tried…”
-Shelbee

I mentioned in the Ballet Flats reminder post that I have tried many times to find a pair of these feeble flats that would classify as Good Buys, but I have yet to succeed. I did get inspired by this theme though and I cleaned out the bin of smelly old ballet shoes in my basement! Most of these were Bad Buys due to the lack of comfort. This style of shoe simply does not agree with my feet. While I find them adorable and stylish on so many levels, I have to just appreciate them on other people now. Of the 17 pairs pictured below, only 2 fall into the Okay Buy category, the red patent Mary Jane style ones and the bronze ruched ones. Both were moderately comfortable and very versatile. I wore the red ones to death and tried to replace them but never could find another pair that was even moderately comfortable.

I ended up getting rid of 16 of the 17 pairs the other day and it felt really great to unload! I kept the pastel blue lace up ones because they are just too pretty. Comfortable enough to wear a few times, flimsy enough that a few times is all the life they have in them anyway. Plus they kind of match my living room so I am trying to think of way to incorporate them into my home decor and never wear them again. Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose whenever I can!

The pale blue lace up ones are the only pair to make the big cut.

You are invited to join us in May to share your favorite (or least favorite) Sheer things. Examples of sheer, or transparent, fabrics include lace, gauze, chiffon, georgette, muslin, organdy, organza, mesh, fishnet, tulle, and even that clear plastic or nylon stuff used for translucent umbrellas and rain coats. Basically, if it isn’t opaque, go on and share it with us! You are welcome to send two photos if you’d like to be featured on both blogs. Remember to include a brief description about your submissions. Please submit your photos and descriptions by the 10th of May to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com or to info@nancysfashionstyle.com so we can put you in the spotlight.

Do huaraches have a wider toe box are than ballet shoes? I feel like my issue with ballet shoes is the toe box is generally a bit too narrow for my wide Flintstone feet! But wide shoe sizes are always too wide. I can’t win. I am stuck between the boxes once again…not medium width or wide width…but somewhere in between!

Thanks so much, Jodie! It felt amazing to ditch all those shoes! I was able to empty one whole big bin in my basement and every little bit of progress helps! A few months back I got rid of about 20 pairs of beat up old sandals…mostly thong style sandals…because I simply can no longer tolerate those straps between my toes. So no need to hold onto unwearable things! My feet have become super sensitive and picky with age!

Their discomfort definitely outweighs their cuteness when it comes to ballet flats, Marsha! I have a few pairs that are tolerable enough but overall this style of shoe is generally always a bad buy for me!

At least you cleaned out the basement, although I think it will be a small section. I agree with you that they are not the most comfortable shoe. They don’t give any support at all. But they do look cute!

Nancy, it felt so wonderful to clean out one whole bin of stuff even though it was just a small section of my basement. A few months ago, I got rid of about 20 pairs of uncomfortable and worn out old sandals, too, which felt equally amazing. I have so much more to go though! I did end up styling my red lace up ballet flats for a post next week. Those actually aren’t terribly uncomfortable for ballet flats. This was a fun theme!

Hey Shel! Can’t believe 2019 is actually 4 years ago, yikes!
Did u ever do a post on mid-calf cowboy boots? Finding ‘m a bit tricky to really pull off, especially with dresses …
    Have a fun week!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Hi there, Barbara! Time sure is flying by, quicker and quicker the older I get! I have not ever done a post specifically on that topic but I have worn my mid-calf cowgirl boots with dresses. I find that I generally like them better with longer dresses because of where they hit the calf. But some shorter dresses work with them as well. Usually with tights in cooler weather. Tights in the same color as the boots work really well for creating one continuous line. I hope all is well and you have a fabulous week ahead!

Ballet flats are one style that I tend to like on other but not on myself so I don’t own any and haven’t for years and years. I miss Payless stores!! I used to buy a lot of my shoes through them (though now that I’m older I probably wouldn’t be able to as it seems like my feet definitely need higher end comfort shoes than cute and cheap ones I used to be able to get away with!).

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I am seeing a common theme around ballet flats, Joanne. Most of us find them unbearably uncomfortable. I have been getting rid of a lot of my Payless shoes recently for that same reason. My old feet only want super comfortable with lots of support. Cheap shoes just don’t cut it any more!

Thanks so much, Sabina! It feels so good to shed some of my unwanted/unworn things! I am waiting for my niece to come visit because she wears the same size shoes and wants some of my Converse collection. I am definitely ready to start passing some things on!
