Tattoos are an expensive habit but a wonderful way to help body and skin become a canvas of self expression for artistic types of people. If you have tattoos, then you have most likely spent a lot of money on your body art. So the last thing you want is to cover up and hide your self expression beneath your clothing. Instead, you probably want to incorporate your tattoo art into your style choices so the world around you can see your creativity.

The moment you decide to get a tattoo, you begin to view your entire wardrobe from a different perspective. As soon as you start adding body art through tattoos, your body and skin become a canvas of self expression and your newly decorated sculpture needs new outlets for adornment to adequately highlight your personal taste.

Finding clothing that matches your tattoos can be a bit more challenging than dressing yourself before tattoos were a permanent part of your body. This article will offer a few suggestions for how you can dress to showcase your tattoos in the most flattering ways.

If You Have Bright Tattoos, Choose Relatively Neutral Colors

If your tattoos are particularly bright, you may want to shift your wardrobe to a more neutral color palette including shades of beige, black, and white. If you inject too many vibrant hues into your outfit choices, you risk appearing too busy while also allowing your tattoos to fade into the background of your bold outfit.

Pick a Hair Color That Matches Your Tattoos

According to College Fashion, choosing a hair color that closely matches the colors in your tattoos can be helpful for avoiding too much clashing in your overall appearance.

Consider a Theme

When it comes to sartorial themes, your choices are endless. Websites like https://loveyourmom.net can provide a variety of clothing options that will naturally complement your tattoos.

If your tattoos are Asian-inspired, you may want to consider Japanese-inspired wardrobe pieces or anime style outfits. Perhaps your tattoos closely resemble bright watercolor images. In that case, outfits that are primarily black or white will create the perfect backdrop for your body art to really stand out. Maybe your tattoos are more traditional with basic black or blue ink, in which case, jeans and tee shirts are a great way to showcase your coolness factor.

Opt for Clothing That Reveals Your Tattoos

The location of your tattoos matters a great deal if you want to show them off in public. Tattoo placement is always a specific consideration when you decide to adorn your body with artwork. Certain placements make it easy to expose your tattoos while you may need to be a bit more creative and inventive with your clothing to show off other tattoos.

If you have a tattoo on your back, halter tops and other top styles with open backs will create an uninterrupted flow of your clothing into your artwork. If your tattoos are on your legs, short dresses and skirts are always a great way to showcase your body art. Tattooed arms are easy enough to show off by choosing sleeveless and short sleeve styles. Tattoos that have been placed on your chest or cleavage area can be adequately displayed for public view by wearing low cut tops or deep vee necks.

Wear Chunky Bracelets and Statement Earrings

Bold jewelry choices such as chunky bracelets and large, colorful statement earrings can work really well with tattoos. Gold jewelry, in particular, tends to highlight the different colors used for tattoo art, making them appear more vibrant. Furthermore, if you have chosen more neutral or monochromatic palettes for your clothing, bold jewelry can offset the neutrality and give your entire outfit more interest and artistic appeal.

If you are a person who loves tattoos as a form of personal expression, paying closer attention to your clothing choices is important. You want to complement your tattoos in a manner that helps them to stand out in the right way. Certain wardrobe pieces can clash with the colors in your tattoos, so trying some new outfits to see which works best is a great idea for discovering the best way to showcase your body art.

Do you have any tattoos? Have you found that you dress differently because of your tattoos?

It’s funny – I am old enough to remember when tattoo placement was all about whether you could hide the tattoo if necessary. LOL! I am tattoo-less at this point. That may change at some point. Your post makes some excellent suggestions!

Michelle, thanks for reading. When I was editing this piece, I was thinking the same thing. It used to be we had to cover our tattoos but now we can show them off. I like tattoos and I wish I could afford the expense of getting more.

Well, I have one and it shows only when I want it to show. It’s on my lower back and sometimes I wish I could show it off a bit more. Most of it is visible when I’m wearing the right swimsuit and if I’m wearing a shorter shirt un-tucked and bending over just right. I’ve never really thought about color coordinating with it, though, but I do have the perfect shirt that is reaallly low-cut in the back and has the same colors in it and I just need to remember to wear it with low-rise bottoms. Thanks for the reminder and the inspiration!

Ruth, I love that you have thought out how to showcase your lower back tattoo! Before I received this content to publish, I never really tried to coordinate my clothing around my tattoos either. I almost always forget that I have even visible tattoos! I think when you have large areas tattooed like your entire back or chest or arms and legs, it is cool to wear outfits that add to the cool factor! Thanks for reading!

I don’t have tattoos but was interested in this article anyway because it is something I’ve always wondered about. I think if I did have body art, I would want to wear clothing that showcased it. But I wouldn’t want the art to be half-covered or obscured to the point that the images couldn’t be recognized. Does that make sense? Then again, I assume that I would be getting the tattoos for myself, and if part of a image was covered and didn’t ‘read’ clearly to others seeing it, I would still know what it was. Hmmm. Thanks for a article that made me think.

Leslie, thanks for reading the article! When I first got my tattoos, the goal was to be able to conceal them because the professional work environment was not keen on visible tattoos. But it is a totally different world now and it is fun to showcase your body art if you have it. In all honesty though, I generally forget that I have tattoos at all!

Jasmine, I love this! I stopped getting tattoos after I had kids only because I can’t afford them anymore! It is an expensive habit. When I got my first tattoos though it was at a time when they had to be in places that you could conceal them for work. But things have changed a lot since then. I have always wanted more in visible places like on my legs and my full arms. Maybe one day I will get around to it. I am excited for you though if you are getting that first color one!
