About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

About the Artist: Kristy Goggio

Kristy Goggio is an American fine artist from Wisconsin. In 1986, she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design with a major in painting and a minor in drawing. She later earned an Associate’s Degree in Horticulture with an arbor minor from the Milwaukee Area Technical College in 2014.

In 1991, Goggio founded Arc East Art & Frames, a dual-purpose retail custom picture framing business and gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which she operated until 1999. From 2001-2014, she published her art and designs through international publishing company, Wild Apple Graphics (WAG). WAG also acts as a licensing broker between artists and designers working in the home decor industry. In her role as an artist/designer with WAG, Kristy has had thousands of her art and design works printed on household items such as linens and towels, kitchenware, rugs, and pre-framed posters sold at retailers such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, and Pier One.

Since 2001, Goggio has enjoyed teaching non-accredited painting and drawing classes in the Milwaukee and Waukesha, Wisconsin, areas, while continuing her work as a full time fine artist. Her art has been represented in international art competitions and exhibited in fine art galleries around the world including my bedroom in Watertown, New York. She has received numerous awards and accolades which are listed on her website, Kristy Goggio Art.

About the Art: Still Life

If you read my post last week introducing this painting, then you already know that I found it on a thrifting adventure. I went shopping on my birthday with my birthday coupons in hand when I found this gorgeous still life oil painting in Thrifty Shopper for $13 ($9.75 with my birthday coupon). When I brought it home, I decided to research the artist and see what I could learn which led me to choosing this oil painting as our style prompt.

I couldn’t find any information about my painting because it contains no information other than the artist’s signature. But I did find another Kristy Goggio still life oil painting, Five Vessels, for sale on Etsy for $200. The description dates the framed work as vintage 1990s. I immediately realized Five Vessels was in the exact same frame as my still life so I would date mine in the 1990s as well. But I would narrow that down to 1991-1999 when the artist owned and operated her custom framing shop. I suspect, but I have no actual confirmation, that she created these still life oil paintings during that time and framed them herself. They may have even been on display in her frame shop.

When I saw this very large oil painting leaning against the wall in the thrift shop, I was immediately drawn to the colors but I was not so fond of the vintage 1990s dark bronzy plastic frame. The color palette and the size of the work, however, were exactly what I needed for my bohemian master bedroom makeover. So with a little bit of sandpaper and a whole lot of elbow grease, I scrubbed all that ugly bronzy finish off the plastic. Then I used a sponge to apply 3 coats of white indoor trim paint to give it an antique looking finish.

The canvas measures approximately 24 x 36 inches and the frame is approximately 32 x 44 inches. It is currently on exhibition in Watertown, New York, in my bedroom above my dresser.

About My Outfit

For my outfit, I focused on the pink, purple, and blue shades that are abundant throughout the entire canvas and I found that magenta seemed to really pull all those shades into one bright happy hue that is suiting my mood right now. You might remember this dress from my wintertime Viva Magenta post with The Magnificent 8. It had giant puffy sleeves that I hated but I bought the dress anyway figuring I could eventually remove the sleeves, which I finally did last week. So the timing was perfect because I wanted to share my newly altered magenta dress anyway! You can see the puffy sleeves peeking out from under my cardigan in the photo below.

Look how puffy. Puffy shoulders are just not my jam. So I took a seam ripper to them and then stitched a quick hem around the armholes and now the dress suits me.

To incorporate shades of blue and some flowers, I added a navy and white floral ruana and navy wedge sandals. They look black in the photos on my screen but they are definitely dark navy. I also wore a pink floral neckerchief to add a variety of flowers to my interpretation. Although there isn’t much white in the painting itself, I did want something white-ish in my outfit to represent the refinished frame. My ivory horn necklace and straw sunhat seemed to meet that criteria while also working well with the aesthetic I was seeking.

Initially, I had this black kimono with purple and magenta flowers in mind but there were a lot of colors in that floral print that just didn’t match the painting the way I wanted them to. So I instead chose this blue and white floral ruana because of the abundance of white in the background and the limited two-color palette. This ruana has proven to be really quite versatile in my wardrobe, as you can see below. In addition to magenta, I have also worn it with blue, coral, and red.

And that’s all I’ve got for you for this episode of Style Imitating Art. I really enjoyed using this painting as our outfit inspiration! If you want to join us and be featured in my gallery post on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, please send your photos to me at shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10:00 p.m. EST. I totally missed out on all the blue! I was concentrating so hard on the prints! I loved reading about this artist and how she works. I would really love to have one of her current prints. They seem so totally me, but I’m guessing they’re a little pricey just to hang in my closet!

I bought some fabric to make a skirt yesterday, and I have even cut it out. But, now, I’m trying to figure out how to make the side seam pockets…which seam to sew first! It will figure itself out soon, I hope!

Love your outfit…I knew you’d come up with something amazing for this one! And, I love seeing the art in your bedroom, especially with your rag curtains!

Marsha, thanks so much! This painting has made me really happy and I think that is totally awesome for $10 and a few hours of physical labor! I wish I could help you with your skirt project but pockets are wayyyy beyond my skill level. But I am looking forward to seeing it when you’re finished. A few weeks ago, I made a super crazy robe thing out of two ugly dresses that I should share on the blog soon. Maybe I just need to write a post of all the random things I have been working on. I finished the rag curtains and I have also added some more jewelry displays in my bedroom and turned a third one of those ugly floral prairie dresses into a gorgeous duster. I also painted my front door teal to match the living room and Ralph and I made some pretty cool tie dye tee shirts, too! I hope you are well, my friend! We should schedule a phone or video chat soon! I had a good long telephone conversation with Michelle yesterday afternoon and I am Zooming with Nancy this morning!

      xoxo
