Style Imitating Art | A Bird in the Hand by Lizzie Riches

About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. It challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, or Marsha so we know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Salazar chose this week’s artwork by contemporary London artist Lizzie Riches, who takes a lot of inspiration from Renaissance portraits and paintings and adds a modern twist. Salazar picked this specific painting because it suits the autumn season and moodiness of fall.
The Artwork
A Bird in the Hand by Lizzie Riches

About the Artist: Lizzie Riches
Born in London in 1950, Lizzie Riches is a contemporary British artist with a great flair for creating Renaissance-inspired portraits with a modern twist. She grew up near Epping Forest where her love of natural history began at a very young age. She attended the Camberwell School of Art followed by Goldsmiths College but she soon became disenchanted with the painting styles that were popular during the late 1960s. Turning away from the “fashionable art” of her time, Riches took a more organic approach to her work and created her own visual language based on her genuine connections to the subject matter.
In 1973, Riches moved to Norfolk where she began painting seriously. She has been exhibiting her art at London’s Portal Gallery since 1976 and also has had many international solo exhibitions since then. According to the artist, her work is specifically inspired by the relationship between civilization and nature. With a constant soul searching quality to her paintings, Riches has stated, “I walk around cities, I look at people, I read books, I look at other people’s paintings, and I make a kind of soup of all this information and something comes out of it.”
Lizzie Riches frequently accepts commissions for her artwork including from the London Transport System, Webster’s Wine Publishers, a luxury cruise liner, and an 80 foot mural for a country house in Kent. Her paintings are represented in the private collections of Ringo Starr, Sir Roy Strong, Nicholas Rothschild, Jackie Collins, and Quentin Letts as well as various corporate collections.
While Riches keeps her personal life highly private, she has referenced making her own maternity clothing during her first pregnancy and has stated that her daughter’s sweet face serves as the primary visual source of inspiration for almost all of her portraits.

About the Art: A Bird in the Hand
There is very little information available about the artist and her paintings. A Bird in the Hand is an undated oil painting on canvas measuring 16 x 12 inches (40.6 x 30.5 cm). It was sold for an undisclosed amount to an unknown private collector at some point before 2021.

About My Outfit
As you’ve scrolled through this post, you may have noticed that I’m wearing three different iterations of this outfit. The pièce de résistance is my long flowy robe with a brown and white leafy print that I immediately thought of when I saw the art inspiration for this round. The botanical pattern accurately captured the vibe of the woman’s jacket in the portrait.
But her jacket has all that beautifully rich orange trim that my robe is lacking, so I added a newly thrifted tee shirt dress in that color over a pair of dark brown leggings as my base layer. The dress provided just the right amount of orange to create the same balanced color palette as the painting.
I added coordinating accessories with my vintage brown Doc Marten boots and my dark brown wide brimmed hat. The printed hat band sort of represents the bejeweled head band of our subject. I also wore a gold leaf pendant necklace for more leafiness, a thrifted sequined owl necklace because I needed a bird in the outfit, and orange and gold tear drop earrings that mimic the shape of the subject’s earrings. A white infinity scarf wrapped around my neck was the perfect way to represent the woman’s ruffled collar and I stacked on a bunch of beaded bracelets to represent her ruffled cuffs.
In the first sets of photos, I wore a new deep brown woven belt purchased on clearance for $3. I wasn’t sure about the belted silhouette so I un-cinched my waist for the second take on this outfit interpretation. I was sure that I did not like the way the orange tee shirt dress was bunching without the belt so I eventually switched the orange dress for a brown tee shirt.
While the orange dress was a wonderful addition for the purposes of interpreting and accurately reflecting the artwork, I definitely preferred the outfit with the brown tee shirt and that’s how I wore it for the rest of the day and the day after!

I hope you have enjoyed this round of dress up. Be sure to check out how Salazar and Marsha have styled their outfits inspired by this beautiful oil painting.
