October’s theme is all about Shades of Brown, a quintessential color for autumn along with rich reds, deep oranges, and golden yellows. We have already featured Red/Pink and Orange for this series but not yellow or brown. In fact, as far as color prompts go for The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book, we have also covered Green, Black and White, Periwinkle and Purple, Easter Egg Colors, Barbiecore (Hot) Pink, and Gold. If there are any other colors (or prints, patterns, styles, etc.) that you would like to see as a focus for this series, please let us know. We have been hosting this series for a really long time and we are running out of ideas! You can see all the different themes we have covered since 2018 here.
The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book is a monthly series hosted by Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style and myself. Every month, we invite you to share a photo or two of your Good (or Bad) Buy items that fit the stated theme. We ask that you also provide a short description explaining if the item you are sharing was a Good Buy or one that you will be saying Good-Bye to (formerly known as Bad Buys). Nancy and I will both publish a round up post featuring all of the submissions on the 15th of each month.
Anyone who would like to participate and be featured can send us their photos with a short description via email. You do not have to be a blogger to join. Anyone is welcome! We will give you the theme for the next month at the conclusion of each post. Photos for Shades of Brown will be due to us by the 10th of the month.
Brown is not an abundant color in my clothing wardrobe, but I still have lots and lots of brown shades in my accessories. As usual, let’s go digging in the archives to see what I have worn in Shades of Brown over the past 8 years! Hopefully, you will be inspired to join us with your favorite (or least favorite) things in Shades of Brown.
This is a big post because brown is a big color with a huge range of variety. It is a Big Book of Brown!
2023
This year, I have styled boots, hats, handmade ruanas, scarves, belts, dresses, and a lace sleeveless duster in shades of brown ranging from the lightest tan to the darkest chocolate.
2022
Last year, I wore my brown hues in coats, scarves, dresses, hats, boots, trousers, sweaters, and kimonos ranging from the palest beige to rich caramel shades.
Shades of brown appeared in soft taupes and tawny camels in my 2021 wardrobe with a few occasions of dark mocha. Look for browns in leopard prints, snake prints, cow prints, Aztec prints, florals, plaids, and camouflage.
In 2020, it seems like my footwear was dominated by shades of brown with a variety of different brownish hues popping up in my clothing (and Ralph‘s, too).
I didn’t wear a lot of brown in 2018 with it appearing mostly in my accessories. But I did wear tan skinny jeans, a taupe floral dress, a dark brown sweater poncho, a camel vest, a brown polka dot dress, and a light tan trench coat.
There was not a lot of brown to be seen on my blog in 2016 except for a cardigan, boots, a dress, a poncho, a leather jacket, a kimono, and a backpack.
And then there is not much brown at all from 2015 except a few pieces that were already shared somewhere above. I hope all of these shades of brown have inspired you to join us this month.
You are invited to join us in October to share your favorite (or least favorite) items in Shades of Brown. You are welcome to send two photos if you’d like to be featured on both blogs. Remember to include a brief description about your submissions. Please submit your photos and descriptions by the 10th of October to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com or info@nancysfashionstyle.com so we can put you in the spotlight.
*By joining The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book, you agree to receive a monthly reminder email for this series.

Brown is such a versatile color and you have so many gorgeous outfits here! I wear more tans and taupes but recently got a chocolate brown dress that I love. I’ll have to remember to submit my photo! Thank you for the linkup and have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks, Jill! It really is a very versatile color. I didn’t even realize how often I wear these shades until I started finding alllllllll these photos of outfits in shades of brown! I do prefer the deeper, darker chocolatey shades over the tans, but it is all good! I look forward to seeing your new brown dress!
Thanks, Amy! I didn’t even realize how much brown I have until I was working on this post. I have incorporated it into my home decor as well. It is a beautiful accent color for in the home!
What a fun trip down memory lane seeing all of your outfit inspiration photos! I don’t wear much brown (more than I thought, after seeing accessories as possiblities in your examples), but sent in two outfits that I found. Enjoyed this post, thanks for hosting the link up!
Thanks so much, Di! This post took way longer to assemble than I anticipated but it was fun seeing how much brown and tan I actually do wear! I received your email with your photos but I haven’t even looked at it yet! Thanks so much for joining us again!
Shelbee I’m totally into all brown – the number of times I look down at an everyday outfit and realise I’m dressed nearly head-to-toe in brown is more often than I’d like to admit! 😉
Thank you for hosting, hope you have a fabulous weekend
Catherine, I can understand your love for shades of brown. I imagine they look amazing on you with your hair color and complexion! And you do have a knack for rocking vintage vibes and all brown really reminds me of 70s styles. I love that! Hopefully, you will join us this month with some of your favorite all brown outfits! Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend, my friend.
Thanks, Laura! It really is like a forgotten color but it is such a great neutral to accent outfits even if you don’t like wearing all brown. I hope you find something to share with us this month! Have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks again Shelbee for the reminder. I didn’t realize there are so many shades of browns. I see you really like brown where I am strictly a person who only wears black. I don’t know if I have anything in brown but it’s hard to know for sure as being color blind I could be wearing brown and not know it! I must see if I have any thing to send for this topic as I would hate to miss a Good Buy – Good Bye theme.
Thanks, Jamie! I thought I wore more blacks than browns myself, but apparently I wear a lot of brown, too! I hope you find something brown to share with us!
There are so many shades of brown to choose from and mix and match. I find a chocolate brown much more flattering than black on me now, and of course brown and orange retro patterns feature heavily in my wardrobe!
Browns definitely work well with vintage vibes! I do love those retro shades of brown, orange, and avocado green. And you really know how to rock those colors, my friend! Hopefully, you can join us this month with some of your favorite browns!
Brown is a recent re-discovery for me! I prefer it to black as a neutral for fall/winter. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s outfits. You have an amazing brown closet! Thanks for linking Shelbee.
Thanks, Gail! I thought I preferred black over brown as a grounding neutral, but it looks like I have a ton of brown stuff, too! It is a gorgeous color for any season.

You must love brown with all these photos. I’ve always loved the color myself. Even my home decor has a lot of browns. Thanks for the party.

Oooo! What an underestimated color. So many people don’t think about brown (myself included). Love this idea for a theme!

Oh, my goodness, Shelbee! How will you ever narrow it down? I am going to have to think about this one as I have brown, but not a lot, in my closet!
Thanks so much for the feature and the link party!
