The Real Story Behind Deployment
This post is about my military wife friends (and the spouses whom I do not know) who have lived though multiple deployments while starting and raising families, pursuing their own personal development, and nurturing and strengthening their marriages through the long separations. I respect you. I support you. I applaud you. I have already written about this deployment being our first as a family. We are almost half way through and so far it hasn’t been as terrible I thought it would. Certainly, it is true that everything breaks as soon as your husband leaves… …but that’s really not a big deal. We laugh about that. We make jokes and…

Pleasantly Plaid in Plum and Navy
Ever since plaid pants hit the punk fashion scene in the 1980’s and I saw Cyndi Lauper rocking them like no one else, I have lusted for a pair of my own. I remember my sister had a pair of red, orange, and yellow plaid skinny pants around that time and I was so jealous. It has taken me over three decades to acquire my own plaid pants, but I finally have them. I didn’t style them in the old school punk rock way (although perhaps next time I will). Instead I took the preppy route. Like super preppy, complete with a navy blue cardigan, bronze ballet flats, and a…

Old Friends are the Best Friends
Do you have that one friend (or a few) whom you have been friends with forever? That friend whom you may not see or talk to for years and pick right up where you left off as if it had been only a few days? That friend whom you know you can always call in a crisis, but never really need to? That friend whom has seen you at your best and your worst but really only sees just you? That friend whom genuinely and sincerely only wishes the best for you without hidden resentment or jealously? That friend whom has always been your friend and always will? Yeah, that…

Let’s Finish this Countdown….Fall is Coming! (Final Part of Too Hot for Clothes!)
This post is going to be a straightforward outfit of the day post (well 3 outfits to be exact). Nothing less, nothing more. But I do have some meaningful stuff brewing on the back burner right now. So please stay tuned! I’m not going to waste my time or yours trying to find links to the exact or similar items…because let’s be honest…no one is interested in summer clothes right now anyway. It’s time to move on, fair weather, to the glorious cooler days of autumn. Farewell, farewell, dog days of summer, may we never meet again. Outfit # 4: Girly Gingham I put together this outfit to run errands…

Too Hot for Clothes: Countdown to Fall (Part 2 of Some…)
(Continued from Too Hot for Clothes! (Part 1 of some…)) Outfit #2: Stressed in Stripes Well, actually, I’m usually stressed in just about anything I am wearing these days. And I like the alliteration. And I like that stressed rhymes with dressed. And this is a fashion blog. So there you have it. Stressed in stripes. In reality, stripes are another new obsession of mine, especially Breton stripes. I have collected quite a few striped shirts and pants, but most of them are heavier and I need the weather to cool down before I can start showing them off. Speaking of weather, today was a teaser of sorts. It was…

Too Hot for Clothes! (Part 1 of some…)
I know most fashion bloggers and their followers are ready for Fall at this point in the summer. And I know everyone loves when Summer rolls around again and they can shed their layers and bring their sandals back into rotation. But I am one who would be superbly happy if it remained Fall for 12 months a year. In fact, I have been ready for Fall and planning my Fall outfits since mid-May! My perfect temperatures are between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature starts closing in on 70 degrees, I am uncomfortable, hot, and cranky, and I start the countdown to cooler days. I get especially…

Funky Sunday (or Deployments Suck)
Deployment life is definitely not for the faint of heart. In fact, it pretty much downright sucks. Today marks 108 days since J left and we have been in a funk since day 85. And in case you’re wondering, we definitely count the days…Every. Single. One. Which is why I know the exact day when the funk set in. Some days move quicker than others. Some days are easy. Some days are long. Some are really, really long. And some days are completely awful and I think, “How the heck are we going to make it through the next ____ days?” Long holiday weekends, like this one, are difficult because…

Gladiator Gladness
I bought these black gladiator sandals about 8 or 9 years ago from UrbanOG for less than $20. I thought they were awesomely cool and unique and you didn’t see anyone wearing gladiator sandals at that time. I loved these babies so much that I styled them with a white sundress and an armband of flowers when I renewed my vows with J in May of 2010 (our actual wedding ceremony was in January of 2008. I wore black combat boots that day!). These days, you can’t shop summer sandals in any shoe store or online store without being bombarded with about a thousand different options in gladiator sandals. I…

Moms’ Night Out
This past Saturday was our monthly night out for my Moms’ Club. We pick a place (either a restaurant or someone’s house), ditch the children with their fathers (or a grandparent or babysitter if dad is deployed), and get together for some much needed girl talk unhindered by kids! This month we chose Good Fellos, a cozy little brick oven pizza place in Sackets Harbor, New York. The atmosphere was warm, the food was good, and the company was even better. We ate, we laughed, we even cried a little…and then we headed home in sleepy stupors at the oh so late hour of 9:30 p.m.! It’s definitely a mom’s…

Deployment Blues
Today marks 100 days of deployment! I think it also marks a turning point in our moods because yesterday during Friday Night Skype Time, emotions were running high for all of us. It was the first Skype date that ended in tears all around. The kids were crying that they miss Daddy so much and they want him “to come home forever.” This, of course, led to both my husband and I tearing up. We have all been doing really well with this separation, better than I expected, in fact. Last night truly was the first time that the real Deployment Blues set in… Appropriately, I donned a mostly blue…
