Last Thursday, I shared my Essential Back-to-School Checklist featuring some first day of school of photos of my boys with me and Jeff and my in-laws. So I figured today was a good day to share the details of what I wore for my kids’ first day of school.

The temperatures are beginning to cool off here in the North Country and it is really beginning to feel like fall. The mornings and evenings are getting brisk and I find myself reaching for extra layers that I can shed throughout the afternoon as it gets warmer. I was actually a little cold in this outfit in the morning and wished I had worn socks and a sweater instead of sandals and a lightweight kimono. Both kids layered on heavy sweatshirts before leaving for school on the first day, but by the time the school day was over we were all sweating in the summer heat. So I tolerated the cold for a few hours. Mostly because I really wanted to share this awesome new kimono with y’all!

It’s not like I needed a new kimono. I will never actually need a new kimono. But I will always want more! In fact, I recently acquired three new ones. Oops. How ever did that happen?! Well, I’ll tell you how this one happened…

I went for a quick browse through TJ Maxx a few weeks ago in search of a new napkin holder for my dining room makeover and I spotted this beauty hanging by itself right there in the home goods section! It’s like it fell right into my lap. How could I resist?!

Ha. I’m kidding.

I didn’t really spot it in the home goods section.

I strayed a bit from my target shopping area and somehow found myself in the accessories corner where this gorgeous garment was hanging there all alone in a sea of heavy, rather boring looking, ponchos. I quickly snatched up the kimono, tried it on to make sure it fit, and paid the $25 price tag without any hesitation. I think this was the fifth time I have worn it in the last few weeks but only the first time I photographed it. I imagine I’ll have the price per wear well under $1 in no time.

Since this kimono makes its own dramatic statement, I kept the rest of my outfit simple and comfortable with a my favorite black tunic and black leggings from Torrid. I layered on some old neutral and gold colored necklaces and earrings and slipped on my tan rope sandals from Nomadic State of Mind to stay with the whole kimono-bohemian-vibe. I started the day in my black rope sandals but switched to the tan because they have a rubber sole and we were heading to a high school swim meet. The black sandals only have rope soles which can get a little slippery when wet. Keep that in mind if you decide to get yourself some of these awesome rope sandals!

And that is all I have for you today. I hope you are having a wonderful start to the week. Thanks for stopping by and remember to link up your posts below!

I was going to say it was meant to be , even if you did find it in the homegood section. I thin k you once found a dreamcatcher that way, right? Still you spotted it in a sea of kimonos! Love the tiered style and colors and how you kept the rest as a black column. Looks great. Best wishes on your boy’s new school year!

Your post with the boys is so cute! And, I like the outfit you chose. I remember my husband and me having to get three kids ready for a new school year. That was hectic. It’s so much easier now there is only one child. Wishing your boys a great week back at school!

Thanks so much, Tina! My kids are pretty easy when it comes to shopping for clothes and even the morning routine isn’t too hectic these days…until about 10 minutes before leave time when I am still yelling at them to brush their teeth and put shoes on! Haha. I hope Amanda has a wonderful school year! One is definitely easier than three! LOL

I did have a good giggle reading about your find in the dining section of TJ Maxx LOL!! That’s brilliant! I mean…how can you not have a wander to the accessories department in that store? It’s impossible not to, right?! I’d have snapped up the kimono too, Shelbee. It’s utterly gorgeous and looks stunning on you.
    Big hugs

Oh hope it was alright. Didn’t the summer go so quickly Shelbee. Exciting to see a change in the season and weather and be good to get some new styles out. Lovely greens around for the new season here. Jacqui x

Thanks, Jacqui! The first two weeks of school went all right. I can’t believe how quickly the past two weeks have flown by along with the summer! I am looking forward to all the shades of autumn. Happy fall, my friend!

Thanks so much, Patrick! Yes, we always start school right after Labor Day and go until the last week of June. I guess it’s because our summer season is so short here (I have seen snow in June) that they like to give the kids as much of the summer weather as they can! I hope you have a wonderfully successful and safe school year, my friend!

Oh my goodness, Angie, thank you so much! My little ones definitely help me to feel young. But sometimes I get so tired that I feel like I might be 200 years old! Momming has absolutely been my hardest and most rewarding job ever. Which is good, I suppose, since it’s a job I can never quit!

Wow that is such a comfortble look and you look great. And your wearing Torrid leggings which are my very favorite brand of tights. I wear leggings when I drop my grand kids off at school every morning as their Mom has to work. I call them kids but both are young ladies in their teens. I like seeing them to their class as the school dress policy as of this new school year states girls cannot wear leggings as it distracts the boys. I go into the school wearing leggings just to irritate the principle because of her stupid dress code policy. Your lucky that your children don’t have such crazy policies. Dressed they way your are you look so young you could pass as a school student.

Jamie, thanks so much for your kind words! Coincidentally, I am wearing my Torrid skull leggings right now, the same ones that you have! I cannot believe that girls can’t wear leggings to school. But even worse is the reason. That is completely ridiculous and I would challenge that rule, too! I think our school district might have a similar policy but I don’t have girls so I guess I never paid much attention to it. I am going to find out what it states and I might challenge it anyway!

Ha! That’s what I need to do is dig out my Torrid Skull leggings and wear them to school this week. I should get some attention from the principal wearing them and the kids will love. it. I really can’t imagine being told I can’t wear leggings, hell I live in leggings. I started wearing Danskin Supplex ankle length leggings in the early 80’s before they became street wear. A friend I use to visit was moving to England and she knew how much I liked leggings so she gave me a huge container with maybe 50 pairs of tights and leggings. Of course I sorted through and picked out all the Danskin and Torrid brand ones because they’re my favorite. The Mom’s that have daughters at our school are challenging the the dress code policy as they say it is rediculess and even though I don’t have kids at the school I will support them how ever I can. I really liked those Torrid Skull leggings on you and I had to have a pair of my own but it’s very seldom I would buy leggings as I have more pairs then I could possibly wear even though it’s all I wear everyday. Hope your boy’s school doesn’t have a any no leggings stupid rule.

        • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oooh, I am glad that parents are challenging that part of the dress code. It is really silly. I did look up our dress code and it doesn’t say anything about leggings. Basically, it just prohibits offensive logos or ones that promote drugs, alcohol, violence, or gang representations. As far as appropriate clothing coverage, it just states that anywhere that we wear undergarments must be covered with opaque clothing. So nothing see through is permitted if you can see their underwear! It seems like a reasonable dress code to me. The leggings thing, however, is just dumb!

Oh my gosh, that kimono is amazing! I love how you styled it. It’s almost magical how a kimono can transform simple black leggings and a tunic. I love the necklaces, too! (I have Katherine’s mala on my wish list.)

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Pam! That is exactly the reason I love kimonos so much! They are perfect for transforming the easiest, most comfortable basic outfits into something fabulous! I hope you get yourself a mala from Katherine! You really can feel all of her positive energy as soon as you slip it over your head!
