The Fab 40’s are Birds of a Feather
“Byrdes of on kynde and color flok and flye allwayes together.” William Turner, The Rescuynge of the Romishe Fox (The Rescuing of Romish Fox) (1545) I am sure most English speaking people are familiar with the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” I am also certain that most people who are familiar with the phrase understand its meaning fairly easily. Based on the observations of the many species of birds that flock together for safety and companionship, this saying translates to people who share similar interests, backgrounds, ideas, or characteristics and tend to form communities and congregations based on these shared ideals. But I wonder how many of us…

The Fab 40’s in Polka Dots
Sweet, darling, fanciful, fun polka dots. While there are not very many prints and patterns that I don’t love, polka dots have a special place in my heart because they bring a sense of cheerful nostalgia and childlike whimsy to my style game. And I will forever remain a child at heart. This crazy world may try to corrupt and pollute my innocent soul, but I will continue holding on with a very tight grip to my youthful frivolity. Nothing exudes the gaiety of youth quite like some bold polka dots and spirited pattern mixing. When Daenel announced this month’s Fab 40’s theme was polka dots, I knew immediately I…

The Fab 40’s: Black is Beautiful
The color black is one that most of us wear with some amount of frequency yet it is a color that we don’t really discuss in terms of meaning and symbolism in the world, in our lives, and in our wardrobes. When Ada presented this month’s Fab 40’s theme, I was not at a loss of wardrobe items to create a head to toe black outfit. I have always been a fan of monochromatic black outfits as they create the perfect canvas to combine dark and mysterious elements or to add bright and bold bits that will stand out with vibrance against the dark background. I have learned during my…

The Fab 40s and the Need for Tweed
The Fab 40’s have gone from Space Inspired outfits last month to the need for tweed this month. Inspired by The Crown on Netflix which has been feeding her adoration for all things British royalty, Suzy has chosen tweed as a bit of homage to the royals for this month’s Fab 40’s theme. If you been visiting here for a while, you probably already know how much of a nerd I am when it comes to exploring the history of certain fashion trends as well as the origins of specific prints, patterns, and textiles. Since tweed is not a textile that I wear very often, nor do I own very…

The Fab 40’s are Inspired by Space
It’s no secret that I am a space geek. I am completely fascinated and intrigued by space travel, by the enormity of what’s out there, by our abilities to explore space, and by the idea that one day humans may very well have the capacity to populate other celestial bodies. I am that kid (yes, when it comes to outer space, my enthusiasm is very childlike) who jumps on the couch, cheering out loud when a space shuttle launches, holding my breath for the entire time it takes them to get lift off and safely exit the atmosphere. I follow up on NASA news to make sure the astronauts who…

The Fab 40’s: Cold Hearted Snake or Perhaps Just Poly?
When Daenel first presented this month’s theme, Cold Hearted Snake, the first thing that happened was Paula Abdul started singing in my head. And now she won’t stop. While I never could proclaim that I was an avid Paula Abdul fan, I do hold her in the highest esteem for her amazing talents and her fabulous style. I really should have recreated Ms. Abdul’s outfit from the official Cold Hearted video (circa 1989). It is still completely and magnificently in style three decades later. In any event, my mind went immediately to snakeskin prints and black leather with a nice large serving of badassery to go with it. Staying in…

The Fab 40s are Getting Dressed for NYFW
We are back at it again, my Fab 40’s friends and I, and we are dressing up for New York Fashion Week. While NYFW ended on September 16, that isn’t stopping us from dressing the part just for the fun of it. This month’s theme was the brainchild of Ada and I have to admit that I was kind of stumped. Back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, I spent a good many years working in different parts of New York City and it really is one of the most fashionable places on earth. It was such a cool environment back in my 20’s and early 30’s. I remember…

The Fab 40’s Traveled the World
“Everything I do, writing, touring, traveling, it all comes from the punk and hardcore attitude, from that expression – from being open to try things but relying on yourself, taking what you have into the battle and making of it what you will, hoping you can figure it out as you go. Make some sense of it.” Henry Rollins The Fab 40’s are returning after skipping our July post. We had some reorganization to do and the summer months spent in quarantine sort of left us all a bit overwhelmed. A break was necessary so we took it. The biggest change (or addition) to our group is that we have…

Inspired by Suzy Turner: Lace Dress Over Jeans
The last Monday of every month is when I post a themed outfit with my beautiful friends of The Fab 40’s. But we are in the process of making some changes within the group and so we have decided to skip this month. We will be back on August 31, more fabulous than ever! In the meantime, I am sharing an outfit that was completely inspired by one of my Fab 40’s friends, Suzy Turner. Back in April, Suzy shared a post, Grey Hair, Don’t Care: Now is the Time to Seize the Grey. While the focus of her post is about ditching the hair dye and embracing the grey,…

The Fab 40’s are Festival Ready
Happy Monday, y’all! I am back from a long over due break. Over the last two weeks, I have found myself on a crazy roller coaster of emotions which resulted from a whole bunch of nonsense going on in a very private part of my life. I think the emotional roller coaster derailed some time about three weeks ago and I tried to keep riding that broken contraption for about a week before I finally realized that I must disembark from this busted ride and do some necessary repairs! Most of the repairs have been completed with a few counseling sessions, lots of time spent in quiet contemplation, and hours…
