The Thrifty Six are Inspired by Gucci

It was Emma’s turn to choose the theme for this month’s thrifty style prompt and she definitely presented me with a challenge. I have never been one for high end designer brands like Gucci so I never really follow the seasonal runway trends put forth by luxury fashion designers.

But I do pay enough attention to fashion in general to recognize that many designers and brands eventually emerge with trademark prints and patterns, specific color combinations, and certain style aesthetics. For example, Chanel style has been characterized as elegantly modern, known for classic tweed skirt suits, the little black dress, monochromatic color palettes, and their widely recognized double “C” logo. On the other hand, Versace style is recognized for their flamboyantly extravagant designs featuring vibrant color palettes, bold prints, and luxurious fabrics with the most recognized element being their Medusa head logo. Armani style is defined as easygoing elegance with a focus on neutral color palettes, soft tailoring, and minimalism. The Armani brand was revolutionary for their androgynous styles that softened the image of men with fluid, unstructured silhouettes while hardening the image of women through the “power suit.”

But we were not tasked with creating an outfit inspired by just any high end designer. The challenge is Gucci specific and I was befuddled.

This is where the interwebs come in handy. Thank heavens for good ole Google. When I searched “how to create a Gucci inspired outfit”, what I found intrigued me. The Gucci brand is known for eclectic mixing of prints and patterns including dark florals, animal prints, and the classic green-red-green Gucci stripes. Other widely recognized Gucci symbols and styles include the interlocking double-G logo, the horse bit symbol inspired by equestrian culture, the diamanté pattern that was first introduced in the 1930s and still appears on their leather and canvas products nearly a century later, and, of course, the iconic Gucci loafers.

At first, I was set on creating an outfit from the loafers up. While I don’t have any Gucci loafers, I thought my black patent ones were a good substitute. I styled them with an old pair of green, black, and white striped pants to represent the green-red-green Gucci stripes. Because the pants don’t have any red, I wore a red tank top underneath an old navy blue bomber jacket with red stripes on the cuffs, waistband, and neckband. I was actually really pleased with how this outfit came together and it really did have a Gucci-esque vibe to it. But I quickly realized that none of it was preloved or thrifted except for the tank top which was barely visible! So back to the drawing board I went.

For my next attempt at styling a Gucci inspired outfit, I focused on an eclectic mix of dark florals with animal prints and motifs as well as some stripes. With my focus shifted to preloved items in my wardrobe, I layered a thrifted satin leopard motif blouse underneath a secondhand strapless floral dress (worn previously as a skirt). To give the outfit some Gucci drama, I added my DIY wrap made from two old scarves in contrasting patterns of leopard print and stripes. While not the trademark Gucci green-red-green stripes, the combination still felt very high end.

With the two main elements of the outfit being preloved, I didn’t fuss too much about my accessories being secondhand. I added more stripes with my tights and a wide black belt for some structure. Returning to my initial plan of donning loafers for this challenge, I tried my black patent ones with this outfit and they just looked awful. So I switched to my tall black lug sole boots which worked much better aesthetically. I was able to bring in two preloved accessories with my thrifted tan messenger hat and leopard earrings that were purchased at a flea market.

While it’s not my current boho style aesthetic, I am really very pleased with my work on this one! 

I apologize for the giant photo dump but I was having such a good time taking photographs of this outfit. The drama created by my crazy DIY scarf wrap thingy made me so happy. I wore it wrapped, I wore it tied, I wore it draped, and I even dropped it completely while taking the pictures. While the outfit was cute enough without it, I think the scarf wrap really gives it the Gucci edge that it needs for successful completion of this very difficult style challenge.
