Adventures in Thrifting Part 25: White Floral Dress & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #804

Way back in September 2020, a group of five other bloggers and myself kicked off our Thrifty Six group in an effort to draw attention to the environmental impacts of the fashion industry and share ways to decrease that impact by styling fabulous outfits using preloved, secondhand, or thrifted wardrobe pieces. A few days later, I began this fun little Adventures in Thrifting series to highlight additional preloved pieces in my closet.
In 2020, I estimated that approximately 30% of my wardrobe consisted of secondhand items found on resale sites, in thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, or simply handed down to me from someone else. Over the last six years, many of my favorite retailers have either closed their physical stores in my area or simply don’t appeal to my personal style aesthetic anymore. As a result, I think the contents of my closet has shifted from a 30/70 split of preloved to new clothing to a 50/50 split.
I have to admit that I kind of love that for myself. Plus it helps to balance out my cowgirl boot addiction. While I do have a few pairs of secondhand cowgirl boots, my size doesn’t turn up very often in thrift stores and the resale sites charge way too much for used boots so I tend to buy new. In fact, I just ordered yet another pair of new cowgirl boots and I cannot wait for them to arrive so I can show them off!

Enough about that…this post is meant to highlight this adorable preloved floral dress found in a local thrift store a few months ago. I can’t remember what I paid for it but most thrift store dresses in my area range from $5.99 to $7.99 depending where you shop. If I had purchased it on a half off day (I can’t remember if I did), then it only cost me $3-4.
I am not generally drawn to shorter dresses because long maxi dresses suit my midlife boho style much better, but I couldn’t resist the pretty vintage floral print in these gorgeous orange and brown earthy colors. And it perfectly coordinated with my favorite long floral scarf. While this scarf was a new retail purchase from 4 years ago, it was on clearance for under $10 and I have worn it countless times that my price per wear is definitely in the amount of mere pennies at this point.
Since it is still a bit too chilly for bare legs and single layers, I added a pair of nude tights and a very old green fringe sweater vest. I honestly can’t remember where or when I purchased this adorable vest but I have definitely owned since before I started my blog in 2015. It made its first appearance here in August 2016 but I am fairly certain that I purchased it at some discount retailer when we lived in Pennsylvania pre-2013. I don’t wear it all that often, but it is such a unique piece that comes in handy frequently enough to keep it.
To complete this thrifty outfit, I accessorized with my wooden owl necklace, a pair of burnt orange flea market earrings, my white Panama hat, and my new white cowgirl boots.
A quick note about my hat collection…many of my Panama hats were purchased from a wholesale website with prices generally under $10 for plain solid colored hats. I like to buy the plain ones so I can creatively adorn them to match my outfits. Right now, this white hat is decorated with a white fabric belt from a long cardigan sweater and a few white feathers that my cat pulled off of the wall hangings in my Happie Hippie Hallway. I couldn’t figure out how to reattach the feathers to the wall hanging so I gathered them up and stuck them in my hat band instead. I try not to waste anything!

Not only is thrifting good for the environment, it is also really great for the bank account…especially when you love clothing as much as I do. I will forever be a maximalist when it comes to personal style, so it’s better to shop in budget-friendly ways. Excluding the cost of my boots, the total price for this entire outfit was under $50.
How do you prefer to shop for clothing accessories? Are you an avid thrifter or do you prefer only new clothing?

I never have any luck at thrift stores. I really think where you live matters when it comes to thrifting. Your dress and boots are so cute! Thanks for the party.

I think you are probably right, Amy. My sister always says we have way better thrift stores where I live compared to where she lives. She lives in a city with a population nearly as large as my entire county so I would have thought she’d have better stuff in her thrift stores. But maybe because I live in a military community, we get so much more diversity in the things donated. And people move very frequently from military bases and donate stuff when they move. You never have any luck in thrift stores and I never leave a thrift store empty-handed!

I love your thrifty outfit. It is of the usual for you to wear a short skirt, but it looks good on you! I love the layers and accessories. We live in a large populated area, but there is only one thrift store within 20 minutes of me, and it is a very sorry Goodwill. There is also one consignment shop, about half an hour away. They “refresh” the clothing items to make them smell fresh and clean, and the smell it is way too strong for me. I have brought things home and cannot get the flowery sweet smell out of them. So I stick to the jewelry and bag sectiions. Hope you enjoy your weekend and thanks so much for hosting the link up.

Di, thanks so much! While shorter dresses are definitely not my norm, they do allow me to show off more of my boots! I can’t stand the smell in thrift shops either. When I buy things, they go from my car directly into the washing machine. I generally use unscented organic laundry detergent, but I keep some scented Tide pods on hand specifically for washing thrift store clothing. Although, even the scented Tide pods are a bit too strong for me but they do eliminate the thrift store odor. By the second time I wash the item in my unscented detergent, the smell is fixed! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Thank you so much for the feature! That dress is so cute. I tend to gravitate more towards maxi dresses too but every now and then I spy a cute short dress that I just can’t resist.

Thanks, Joanne! Yes, maxi dresses are so much better! But a cute shorter dress is hard to resist sometimes. Plus shorter dresses show off my boots better!

Your True Self
Hi, Shelbee – How impressive to have half of your beautiful wardrobe thrifted! And I’m like you about not throwing anything away; keeping those feathers added such a beautiful touch to your hat. Thanks for the link up – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

Aww, thanks so much, Angie! I might need to start throwing some stuff away soon before I turn into an actual hoarder and end up buried in a pile of clothing that collapsed on my head! LOL

I am not a thrifter. I did take my granddaughter thrifting a couple of weeks ago. We went to this cute little town a ways away that she said had “amazing” thrift stores. She did find a vintage Lilly Pulitzer dress, but lots of things in that particular store were handmade or brand new. The other one was full of designer items from the 80s and 90s. They were very expensive. But, being together was the point of the whole day.
I love your outfit today and was wondering if you were wearing tights or not. I really love the way that scarf just goes with everything. It’s probably in the negatives, right? Your cowgirl boots are super duper cool. They almost remind me of my go go boots I got for Christmas in third or fourth grade! Thanks for the link up!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I love that you went thrifting with your granddaughter even when you don’t necessarily enjoy thrifting yourself. It is definitely about spending the time together more than anything else! I definitely prefer a traditional thrift store over the more “high end” designer/vintage/consignment shops. I am looking for real bargains and don’t care much for high end designers. I mean, if I find a high end designer label for really cheap I might purchase it if it appeals to me. Otherwise, price tags over $15 on clothing items in thrift stores is just too expensive for my taste! It takes away from my boot budget! LOL

I think this is a very pretty outfit. And it looks fabulous on you. Beautiful shade of green. I’m curious which boots you choose!

The dress is lovely and goes very well with your cowboy boots. And it’s a bit Spring like as far as light colours!

Thanks so much, Nicole! We are finally getting some spring like weather here so I can start wearing these types of outfits. Have a lovely weekend, my friend!

Thank you for linking up and imagine my surprise – I have that dress! I have never belted it or styled it in this way but I have it! I found it on the Loft sale rack for $5 several years ago and I have worn it to Thanksgiving and on my fall birthday! I love your commitment to thrifting! I would say I have a commitment to consigning and not quite thrifting. I have a few really great consignment shops.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my goodness, Amy, how crazy is it that you have the same dress?! You paid less for this dress in the actual store than I paid in the thrift! LOL It is a great dress. I just love the vintage floral print in the gorgeous earthy tones. I don’t usually use the belts that come with dresses, but this one seemed to really work for me. Next time I wear it though, I might try a contrasting wide belt instead. I do love playing around with different ways to style the things in my closet. Have a fabulous day!
