It’s time for the second installment of Songful Style and it was my turn to choose the tune! I picked a very special song and then pulled out some very special things that did not work out quite as planned. But before I get into all that, here’s a bit about this new style challenge collaboration with some of my favorite humans in all of blogland.

About Songful Style

Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Michelle of My Bijou Life, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Anne of Spy Girl

Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.

It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!

We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

The song I chose for this style challenge is “Leather and Lace” by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. You can read more about the song’s history and find the lyrics as well as a few music videos and album covers in this post. “Leather and Lace” is our wedding song…if we had a wedding song. But since we didn’t have a wedding song, we just call it “our song”!

I remember the first time I heard this song in the company of Jeff very early in our dating relationship. We both looked at each with wide eyes and recognized how the lyrics really tell the story of our beginnings and that was the moment it became our song.

So when it came to styling an outfit for this song, I not only wanted to pay homage to the great Stevie Nicks but I also wanted to add a bit of my relationship history to it.

Well, it just so happens that I had packed away in a bin the outfit that I wore on my first date with Jeff. I am not sure why I kept it all, probably because I keep everything related to clothing. I wore a pair of Silver brand dark wash jeans, a black camisole, this indigo cardigan, and the black patent shoes. I do recall packing the jeans away many years ago and designating them as my goal size, the size I was when Jeff and I first met. It only took me about 13 years to get back to that size but I figured the jeans would now fit me so I wanted to incorporate them into this look.

I was really pleased that the jeans do, in fact, fit me. However, they are that dreadful low waisted style from 13 years ago that looks good on very few people. I am not one of those few so I see no need to keep them any longer…out they go! And the shoes were utterly terrible with this look. So I had to ditch the first date jeans and shoes but I did keep the little indigo cardigan that I wore on that very first date back in 2008.

I was disappointed that these first date things didn’t work as I had wanted but I absolutely could not wear these horrible jeans for a moment longer. So I switched to my new flared denim that I just shared with my confetti sweater on Friday and added a pair of tan block heeled ankle boots instead.

Now that my jeans and footwear are all figured out, what about the rest of this crazy outfit? I knew I was going to wear my Stevie Nicks tee shirt with some kind of lacy kimono or shawl. On my recent road trip, I listened to The Wild Heart of Stevie Nicks on Audible and learned that she has thousands of shawls and wraps and kimonos that are kept in a temperature controlled vault room. Do you how much I would love to see inside that vault room?!

I am certain that none of my kimonos and lacy shawls are on the level of Stevie’s collection but I did my best with what I have! I went for this pale pink lacy duster that is actually the top piece to a dress. It came with a pale pink slip dress which is way too big. Actually I bought the dress way too big because it was the last one left and I couldn’t pass by the pretty pink lace! I always intended to wear the top layer as a duster or kimono. I also like that my little indigo cardigan has a knit that sort of resembles lace.

I layered on a bunch of necklaces and wore my new burgundy feather earrings that I got in North Carolina. I wanted a long skinny scarf and when I couldn’t decide which of these three to wear, Jeff told me to just wear all three. So I did. Then I braided one side of the scarves for some extra quirk. My floppy burgundy felt hat seemed to fit the bohemian vibe of this look.

For the leather bit of this outfit, I added my ivory faux leather moto jacket and a bunch of leather bracelets. I had wanted to wear leather boots but the suede ones worked better. Although suede is a type of leather so I guess it fits the theme!

I actually really like this outfit with all its textures and layers and drama. I think Stevie would approve! What do you think?

The next song for our April 25, 2022, post is “Hi-Heel Sneakers” by Tommy Tucker chosen by Michelle. She chose this song because she has fond memories of her father playing it when she was young. Tomorrow I will share more details including lyrics, video, and other inspirations that I can find relating to the song. If you are interested in joining us, you are welcome to begin styling now or check back tomorrow for additional inspiration relating to the song.
