Are you all sick of my snow yet? I am. It is almost April, after all. I know that April showers bring May flowers for most of the northern hemisphere. But in my part of the world, it is more accurate to say that March snows followed by April showers simply brings mud season. No clever rhyming there. What rhymes with mud anyway? Nothing all that savory, to be honest.

Also being honest, I shot these photos back at the end of January when we had much more snow on the ground. Right now, there are only few gray patches of filthy snow scattered at street corners and in a few yards that don’t get quite enough sunlight. But it is supposed to snow again this weekend so maybe we will get a nice clean dusting of white over the mud and filth.

When the groundhog predicts 6 more weeks of winter, it always makes me laugh because on February 2, we do still actually have 6 more official weeks of winter according to the calendar. And when the first day of spring finally arrives 6 weeks after the groundhog’s prediction, we still have another 6 weeks of winter where I live. If we base the start of spring on when you can begin planting things in the ground with no worries of frost, then spring begins right in time for summer in the North Country.

While all of my warmer climate friends are sporting light layers and flirty dresses in beautiful shades of spring, I am finding creative ways to look like spring and stay warm like winter. This is where brightly colored sweaters have become my favorite things!

I found this cute confetti sweater on Target clearance back in January and the colors made me so cheerful that I had to have it. I initially created this outfit for our last Stylish Monday collaboration featuring denim but went with my black dad jeans for that instead. These distressed flares are from my recent Charlotte Russe denim haul just like the dad jeans. They are high waisted with a slight flare and lots of stretch for maximum comfort and ease of movement.

I added my coral teddy bear coat from a few years back and I have been trying to make a conscious effort to wear more pins and brooches ever since the Magnificent 8 shared our creative pin styles. A crystal snowflake brooch seemed appropriate on a cozy winter coat on a very snowy day. My mittens are from a local business, Homemade Haven, which specializes in handmade mittens made from upcycled wool sweaters. Heather turns preloved sweaters into the most beautifully unique and incredibly warm fleeced lined mittens.

That is all I have to end out the week…just a simple casual cozy colorful outfit to help combat the spring fever that is setting in. Speaking of spring fever, did you know that it once was an actual medical illness that could result in death. That was the Spring Fever of the 1700s and 1800s before it was known as scurvy. The symptoms of modern day spring fever are not nearly as gross as old time spring fever. Symptoms can include a flushed face, increased heart rate, appetite loss, restlessness, daydreaming, and an overall sense of ennui. The best cure for modern day spring fever is to take the day off and laze around until your energy returns!

Are any of you suffering from spring fever? I most definitely am.

Being a Wisconsin gal, I feel your pain. We still have snow on the ground too and it’s certainly not warm enough for flirty spring dresses. But you do as I do, you wear spring in your colors. I adore this colorful outfit of yours!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Amy! We have to bring the spring to us when we live in these frigid northern climates! We have super cold temperatures next week with lows around 10 and snow forecasted for Wednesday followed by a high temperature of 60 on Thursday. So weird! Stay warm and bright, my friend!

This is such a cute and cozy looking outfit, Shelbee! I love our rainbow sweater and cuddly coral jacket. I’m wearing lighter and more spring like colors too, even though the weather is still not warm enough in Maryland to break out my spring wardrobe. Hope you have a good weekend and thanks for the link up!

  • Suzy Turner

I used to have a sweater very similar to that. I’ve no idea what happened to it, but I did love it with all the colours! I love that you added that gorgeous coral jacket, it goes perfectly. We’ve got rain at the moment, and it’s chilly too but I’m hopeful that the Spring will start in earnest soon! Even I’ve had enough of the cold already, and I usually love it lol!
Hope all is fab with you, Shelbee.
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

Oooh Suzy, I bet a colorful confetti sweater looks so great on you! We have some springlike temperatures right now but it is going to get frigidly cold again next week with snow, followed by perfect spring weather on Wednesday, leading us straight into the muddiest part of mud season! Happy Spring!

Our weather here in the Southwest is much warmer overall. But we can’t count on anything this time of year. We can go out with little more than a sweater one day and the next have snow or at least a cold wind. The trees usually bud out once only to have a brief freeze. But I think we are all ready for spring and not just weather-wise. It seems there is so much bad news and bad behavior, we all crave sunshine. But your site is always cheerful. You always have a smile.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh wow, Donna, thank you so much for this wonderful comment! The bad behavior I keep reading in the news is kind of making me want to stay in winter hibernation forever though. It is absolute mayhem going on in the world right now. So I will keep doing what I can to inject a little happiness into the world around me…even if it is just a smile and confetti sweater! I hope you have the most wonderful weekend!

    Hi Shelbee
You’re funny, the first thing I said to myself when I clicked on to your posts was ” Wow, they still have alot of snow!”. I do love the bright and cheery outfit though! I know what you are talking about with dirty, muddy snow or slush as we had it in Pittsburgh. It has been chilly here, but we have some sun. Love the teddy coat, a great color and it goes well with your colorful sweater!
    Have a great weekend!

Thanks so much, Jess! I love the way a bright outfit can pop against a background of snow or mud! Haha. It is starting to get warmer here but then it goes back to super cold. Next week we have lows around 10 with highs around 60 with snow and rain mixed in. This is exactly the nonsense that creates mud season! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks, Mireille! I think this sweater was only around $10, too. It is super soft and great for my lounging around at home lifestyle! But when I was shopping in Target, I was kind of disappointed with what they had. I found a few cute colorful sweaters and some joggers on that trip, but all the new stuff really did look rather boring. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

Thanks, Cheryl! I guess you can’t really get mad at the weather in general since we have no control over it at all! I am happy to hear that you are getting lots of rain to get you out of the drought. I am loving the flares so much now, too. They are so flattering on every body!

Thanks, Lauren! I definitely don’t like it too warm either, but I am really done with the snow. However, the snow is not done with us. We have a winter storm tonight predicting 5-9 inches of snow. No spring time here yet! Have a wonderful weekend.

I love these kind a sweaters. It always looks like a bit of, tweed sweaters and I love tweed. I also like that jacket a lot, what a lovely colour. I’m enjoying the warm weather over here. It is over next week, but I’m loving all the sun. Have a great weekend love!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Nancy! This sweater reminds me of tweed as well! I think warm weather is a long way off for me. We have a winter weather advisory tonight predicting 5-9 inches of snow. Ugh. I am so over it! Have a fabulous weekend!

I love the confetti sweater! And what a super cute outfit you’ve created around it with the various pinks in your coat, gloves, and hat. You do have such a long winter. Here, it’s about right. Just when I was getting sick of it, Spring weather started making some spotty appearances.

Thank you, Michelle! I really like all the different shades of pink combined in his outfit, too. The winters are sooooo long here…I have seen snow as early as September and as late as June in these parts. It is quite ridiculous! I can’t wait to move south. Have a great weekend, my friend!

  • Your True Self

Hi, Shelbee – You really cracked me up with your intro to this post! YES, I HATE YOUR SNOW…but not as much as you do. LOL! I totally agree about how ugly it is when the snow thaws and there’s no greenery yet. Ugh! In one of those lulls I was wishing for more snow to shovel again. Haha! Well, you know what to do. Color is the answer. We need spring colors in our lives NOW. So I linked up a Spring Color post. Thanks forsharing your humor and your outfits – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Aw, Angie, thank you so much! I am glad I could make you laugh! Your comment just gave me a good hearty chuckle, too! Colorful clothing is definitely what we need during mud season. The colors are great against a white snowy background or a dull brown muddy one! But I am NOT wishing for more snow just to cover the mud…I am ready for warmer weather and sunshiny days!

You have Bernie mittens!!!! How cool that you have someone doing that in your neck of the woods. I have tried and failed to make mittens! Actually, I made my son a pair of those mittens that the top flips down. I actually ended up making him two left mittens because those tops do make one a left hand mitten and the other a right hand mitten. It just goes to show how I lean politically, right?

Your sweater is really perfect for you…so fun and colorful! And, it looks cozy and soft, too. It pairs perfectly with your flare jeans! You look quite fabulous, my friend!

    Thanks for the link party!

Aw, Marsha, thanks so much! Bernie mittens! I had mine first though so Bernie actually has Shelbee mittens! Ha. I have watched Heather at work on her mittens and it requires some serious skills to do what she does. Skills that I don’t have so I purchase from her instead! As fas as politics go, I fall right smack in the middle of most things, able to see all sides and understand all perspectives…like a left and a right hand mitten together! Or something like that?

  • Mica - Away From The Blue

The colours in this outfit are so pretty and spring like while still being cosy and warm enough for snow! I can’t imagine living somewhere so cold, it never snows here! Although to be fair it’s almost completely through the first month of autumn here and it still feels like summer, so our weather likes to hold on a little longer than it should too, haha!

Thanks for the link up and the feature!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Mica! The bright colors really do help to keep my mood positive when the snow won’t stop coming! We have a storm tonight that is predicting 5-9 inches of snow. And all the icky piles had just melted! I can’t imagine living in a place where it doesn’t snow! Haha. I feel like climate change has shifted what the seasons used to “feel” like. For example, when I was a kid, it was snowy and cold at Christmas and warm and springy by Easter. Now I feel like we have more chance of snow on Easter than on Christmas…like the seasons have just shifted a bit. I hope you have a great weekend, my friend!

Still not tired of your snow. We didn’t get any in London in winter. It’s still possible, it’s very cold at the moment. Your jeans have a really nice shape, and I like the confetti and coral very much. Thanks for our linking

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Gail! It is snowing here again this morning. But the temperatures are getting warm enough now that nothing accumulates on the ground. I hope you have a lovely weekend and maybe get some snow flurries as well!
