Reminder: The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book-Hot Pink (Barbiecore) & Link Up On the Edge #324
“Life is a sea I’m sailing, riding the winds of time. Looking to find a course that is mine. Striving to find direction. Starting to understand, every wave’s a part of the plan.”
Barbie as The Island Princess, 2007
When Barbie expressed the above sentiment, she was exactly my age, 48 years young. And my goodness, does that make me feel better that even this iconic doll, a symbol of femininity and power, grace and strength, struggled a little bit through her midlife years. I guess that is one of the reasons this toy has reached such iconic status. Barbie will be 64 on March 9 and now I am wondering if there are any Barbies who actually appear as if she is in her midlife years. Now that might be a cool idea for collectors…Barbie looking f*cking fabulous at her actual age!
Barbiecore is all the rage in the fashion industry right now with the upcoming release of the Barbie film on July 21, 2023, so Nancy and I jumped on the Barbie bandwagon and chose Barbiecore as this month’s theme. My understanding of Barbiecore is head to toe pink. All the shades of pink. But the bolder and the brighter seems to be better. And the more pink, the better as well.
What is The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book?
It is a monthly series that Nancy and I both publish on our blogs on the 15th of each month. Anyone who would like to participate and be featured can send us their photos with a short description explaining if the item was a Good Buy or one that you will be saying Good-Bye to. You do not have to be a blogger to join. Anyone is welcome. We will give you the theme for the next month in each post. Photos will be due to us by the 10th of the month. So please join us for December by sending some photos and descriptions of your favorite (or least favorite) Pink Stuff or Barbiecore Style to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com or to info@nancysfashionstyle.com by December 10, 2022. You are welcome to submit more than one photo if you would like features on both of our blogs.
I do love pink and have incorporated a variety of different shades of it into my closet from palest pale pink to the brightest shades of magenta. While I wear pink frequently, I don’t think the way I generally wear it is bold enough for Barbiecore. But I will share some outfits that I think Barbie might also enjoy wearing. While pink is a dominant color in Barbie’s wardrobe, she does wear other colors as well. “Think bright colors and exaggerated proportions, minidresses and giant platforms, glitter and sparkle — anything that you’d see on the iconic doll herself.” Hopefully, you will be inspired to pull out some bright clothes and be a little more like Barbie or Ken yourself!
“What makes you different just might be your greatest strength.”
Barbie in A Mermaid Tale, 2010
If I were a Barbie, here are some of the personas I might like in my doll collection. I used this list of Barbie through the years to inspire my own Shelbee dolls!
Art School Shelbee
Rodeo Shelbee
Salty Sweet Shelbee
Polar Bear Shelbee
Bedroom Shelbee
“Love and imagination can change the world.”
Barbie as Rapunzel, 2002
Festive Shelbee
Work to Beach Shelbee
I know I didn’t share a lot of pink or even anything really Barbiecore, but my goodness, that was stupid fun! If you had your own personal doll collection, what would be some of your Barbie personas?

Okay, now I feel more like I can join in! I do have some pink just nothing in that bright hot pink that Barbie is known for (though I do have a top on the way I’m hoping I’ll love and will be in on time!).

Oh, excellent, Joanne! I am so glad that I went in this direction for Barbiecore! I love hot pink but don’t have tons of it either. If you scroll through the Barbie through the years link, you will see lots of non-pink outfits! And this monthly challenge is supposed to be as inclusive as possible so let’s all just share what the Barbie version ourselves might wear!

Such a fun way to look back on outfits, adn I think that being able to try all these different styles is the great thing about fashion – you can try it, and if you liked it, you can wear it agian. I fyou hated it, you never have to wear it again!
Thank you for the link up!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Mica! I absolutely love your perspective on that! My mom taught me to approach fashion in a similar way. She always said if something appeals to you on the hanger for any reason at all, you should try it on. The very worst possible scenario is that it looks better on the hanger. So then you just put it back on the hanger and leave it there!

Valerie, thanks so much! This was a fun post to put together. You still have time to send in some photos. I am not publishing the post until December 16. My boys are growing up way too fast! They are at really fun ages right now but it does go by so quickly! I hope you have a lovely holiday season, my friend.

All of those different Shelbees would make for some fun dolls! I remember having Barbies that had wigs. They were just plastic cap like things you could put on their heads, but they were still cool. My mom made so many Barbie clothes for my dolls…I could never sew anything that tiny!
Now, that you’ve given me ideas, I just might come up with something!

Thanks so much, Marsha! As much as I love Barbie, I honestly don’t think I ever owned a Barbie doll! I was never really all that interested in Barbie when I was a kid. But I did love my Fashion Plates! I used to make clothing by hand for dolls that were more American Doll sized but the generic ones. I have always found the process of hand sewing so relaxing and used it often as a relaxation method for my anxiety and it also helped to soothe mania back in the days when that would get really bad. All that being said, I am sure you have something that Barbie would wear in your closet! Or at the very least, you have something perfect for a Marsha doll!

Barbicore is such an interesting trend. And yes, I’d love to see a Barbie that looked like 64. ha ha!

Wouldn’t a mature Barbie be an amazing thing?!

I bet you had a lot of fun putting this together! They really should have Barbie’s at different ages!

Thanks, Jill! I really did have fun. I was giggling coming up with the names but they sounded way better with “Barbie” instead of “Shelbee” like “Bedroom Barbie”! Hahaha.

I just learned something new. I had to look it up. You are always in the know. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

Thanks, Patrick! I am laughing out loud because I am completely clueless…not really ever in the know! Hahahahaha.

I was thinking I don’t have any hot pink, but your pics have reminded me I did have some! I did have a Barbie when I was little. I read a fascinating book called Doll recently which described how one iteration of Barbie had her carrying a book which had just 2 words – “don’t eat” !
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh, I hope you will join us this month with some of your hot pink, Gail! I just watched the Barbie episode of the docuseries The Toys That Made Us and they talked about the Barbie with the Don’t Eat book! It’s on Netflix if you want to check it out.

Haha. Brilliant!
Somehow I missed this. Was in the midst of an intense freelance job methinks.
Must do my own gallery of Anne Dolls.
And dig out the Anne Barbie my coworkers made when I left Mattel!

Um, yes, please! Please, please, please create a gallery of Anne dolls AND show me your Anne Barbie!!!
