My Winter Workout Routine: The Snow Shovel Shuffle & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #792

My winter workout routine. This is it, right here. Just me and my shovel named Sunshine doing the snow shovel shuffle. I have done it almost every morning this month and I can feel it in every muscle. Some days, I have shoveled 3-4 times though the course of the day just keep up with it. When the snow piles get too high to toss the snow on top, that’s when the snow shovel shuffle kicks in. Squat, scoop, stand, and shuffle the snow one shovel full at a time to a different location. I will never understand why we use the term “snow removal” when there is no removing. It is just moving the snow from one spot to another until there is nowhere left to go with it.
I am not sure how much snowfall we have had this season, but it actually has been rather tame compared to years past. The center of the snow belt is located about 10-15 miles (16-24 km) south of us where they have gotten approximately 280 inches of snow this winter. You read that right. 280 inches. That is over 23 feet of snow. Those poor folks are completely buried while I am up here complaining about a mere 8 feet or so of snow.

Today is one of the few days we don’t have any precipitation in the weather forecast. But that doesn’t mean it won’t snow. The schools have closed today due to extreme cold with this morning’s temperatures hovering around -15˚F (-26.1˚C) with wind chills as low as -35˚F (-37.2˚C). This is the third day in the past 2 weeks we have experienced wind chills of -20˚F (-28.9˚C) or below. In fact, last week we were the second coldest place in the United States with an actual temperature of -21˚F (29.4˚C). Alaska was a bit colder at -28˚F (-33.3˚C).
Edit: The Watertown International Airport, where our official city temperatures are measured, indicated a wind chill of -48˚F (-44.4˚C) at 6:25 this morning. Brrrr.

It’s cold, y’all. And so the only outfit photos I have to share are me in my big puffer coat and snow boots, shovel in hand, in the wee morning hours of darkness illuminated only by snow and porch lights.
Stay warm, my friends. And have a wonderful weekend. I’ll be splitting and hauling firewood until my arms fall off, replacing the Snow Shovel Shuffle with the LumberJill Jig!

Oh my goodness! That is so much snow. And the temperatures are horrible. I hope you have enough wood! See you on Tuesday!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
We have to chop some more wood today so that will be my exercise instead of shoveling. We are getting a few days of no snow but it’s starting again at the end of the week. See you Tuesday, my friend!

Well I admire you for doing all that shoveling. I can’t shovel snow to save my life. I’m just not strong enough. Thanks for the party.

Thanks, Amy! I keep telling myself as long as my body will allow me to do these physical chores, I will continue doing them. But some things are getting a little more difficult as the years fly by! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

We have been as low as 24 degrees, with a light dusting of snow here in Eastern Texas. I am no longer a “cold weather person”, she wrote laughing on the inside! Looking forwrad to summer! Thanks for hosting, stay warm.

Oh my gosh, Melynda, that is insanely cold for Texas! We experience -20s at least once or twice every winter so that number doesn’t much phase me these days. But I bet your system is completely shocked! Stay warm, my friend.

Thanks, Marsha! It was about -8 yesterday morning and I was outside choring in fleece lined leggings, a tee shirt, and a hoodie. No coat. Too hot. Maybe that’s the heat flashes! Ha.

This is our ski hill in January 2025 last year, not enough snow to ski. This year in January we have 4 feet plus of natural snow and minus 32 F today. Go figure!

The snow I can handle, these bitter cold temperatures are crazy! Stay warm and enjoy that snow, my friend!

Oh Shelbee, my back hurts just looking at this picture! That is just too much snow! We got 8 inches, and more is being threatenen for the weekend. The bad part about it, was it turned from snow to ice while it was falling, and the ice is incredibly hard to move. Neighborhood kids have been sliding down the hill in our front yard and it is still a pristine solid sheet of ice. It’s that hard! I hope you stay cozy this weekend. Thanks for posting and hosting the link up!

Yoga is my best friend right now, Di! It keeps the back and shoulder pain to a minimum. I don’t really mind it until my body to starts yelling at me! We have a break from snow for a few days. Today, we chop firewood! I much prefer the snow over the kind of ice you are experiencing. Yikes. Be safe out there, my friend!

I love that you named your shovel Sunshine! That is one way to stay cheerful with all that shoveling! Hope you get a break soon!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Laura! I embrace the task as my exercise. On the days when I have to do it four times, I definitely need that Sunshine energy to finish the task! We do have a break for a few days but now we have to split the wood for the fireplace. But fireplace chores are actually my favorite household tasks. I find the whole process very relaxing and fulfilling.

Wowza! That is a lot of snow…280 inches! Even I might quake at that number, and I love snow! You are a good wife and mother to be out there shoveling snow. I’d ask for a snowblower next Christmas! I always struggle with what to wear. You are cold when you first go out, and then you get all heated up so you take something off only to get cold all over again! Thanks, my friend, for the link up!

It is a staggering number, isn’t it?! We do have a snowblower. I absolutely despise it! I am very much a Luddite and much prefer some good old fashioned physical labor! The snowblower is really heavy and it hurts my wrists squeezing those handles. Jeff uses the snowblower when we get more than I can handle with a shovel. My neighbor has his snowblower attached to his riding mower and he will clear our driveway, too, if I don’t get to it first! Hahaha.

I guess that’s your exercise sorted! My goodness, so much snow! We have not had any ( yet) and none since 2023. It’s usually very fleeting in London but fun because of its rarity.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
For sure, Gail! Hahaha. We are supposed to be snow free for the next few days so we have to take advantage and split some fire wood. Lumberjilling will replace the Snow Shovel Shuffle for the next few days! Ha.

The snow is beautiful! Oh, my! My brain is struggling to comprehend 8 feet and 23 feet of snow! We just had 1 inch of ice with 3 inches of snow on top, and our region came to a stop because we never have snow, so we don’t have the equipment to deal with it.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Lisa! The snow is very pretty especially in abundance. But it never gets warm enough to melt so it just keeps piling feet upon feet. I have been watching the national weather and so many places have been disabled because of snow this winter. We are equipped to deal with it since it is our typical winter weather, but it does get overwhelming sometimes. Stay safe and warm!

Thank you so much for the feature! Sorry I missed this/last week’s link up. Yikes that is a lot of snow! I used to spend a good portion of the winter shoveling and actually did sort of enjoy the workout but now the boys tend to take care of snow “removal” and I don’t usually have to do much of anything.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
You are very welcome, my friend! My boys keep telling me they want to make money shoveling for other people but they won’t even come outside and help me! LOL Which is okay, actually, because I do need the exercise and they don’t! Today I will be hauling wood again. I haven’t had to shovel for a few days so I need to do something. Ha.
