When it comes to clothing, it is one aspect of your life where you can boldly showcase your personality. Finding the styles that suit you and illustrate who you are as a person is important to many people as a way of communicating without words. This post provides some tips for creating outfits that will illuminate your individuality to everyone you encounter.

Avoid Being Too Committed To Trends

Trends are very easy to follow but they are trends for a reason. Once a certain style has been labeled as a trend, you start to see it everywhere on everyone. As a result, it loses its unique touch and any genuine personality traits that it once exuded are lost if all the people are dressing in the same outfit as you. Embracing trends too strictly will make it seem like you have lost your individual identity. Also, try to avoid combining too many trends into the same outfit. If you are really drawn to a certain trend, be sure to incorporate your own unique twist into the mix so that the trend adapts effortlessly to your personal style. Finding inspiration from others is great, just be careful not to be an exact copy. Stay true to your own individual uniqueness. It would be a boring world if we all wore the exact same outfits all the time.

Experiment with Pieces Out of Your Comfort Zone

It is so easy to fall into the trap of shopping in the same stores and choosing similar pieces over and over again. Of course, we all have our favorites and those are great for creating a basic wardrobe, but you don’t want to end up with a closet filled with all the same things. Creating a signature style with the same pieces can leave you with a boring wardrobe for your style. Continue to focus on what types of wardrobe pieces speak to you but also try to choose a few items that are a bit out of your norm. As we grow and evolve, so does our style so remain open to exploring new ideas with your wardrobe. You might be surprise at how differently you view clothing pieces as time moves on.

Invest in Quality Tailored Wardrobe Staples

Getting away from fast fashion and focusing on tailored staples is a great way to ensure that you are building a wardrobe with staying power. Tailored items are generally crafted from higher quality materials and they are made specifically to perfectly fit your body size and shape. By investing in quality tailored pieces, you can ensure that you have closet staples that reflect your personal style and fit you in the most flattering and comfortable way. There are a vast array of clothing retailers who offer tailoring services on site to ensure that the fit is perfect for each customer.

For example, there is a company that produces wide calf rain boots to cater to a specific client base that has expressed a need for rain boots that will accommodate women with wider calves. There is nothing more frustrating than shopping for something that you really want or need and the generic sizing options offered by a company do not fit your body type. Identify the key wardrobe pieces that you must have, such as blazers or dresses, and focus on those items as your quality tailored pieces. When they are made and tailored specifically for you, you will feel great wearing them and will reach for them more often.

Acknowledge Your Gut Reactions

Shopping for clothing can often feel like a hit or miss experience. You may think you scored the perfect item in a store only to discover that you don’t really like it once you try to style it at home. Remember to focus on your initial gut reactions. There are certain articles of clothing that just look better in the store and may not be suited for you. If your first reaction when trying something doesn’t leave you feeling excited and beautiful, then it might not be the right item for you. If you feel uncomfortable in a certain style and you feel that it is not an accurate reflection of your personality, leave it behind. Don’t succumb to a trend just because you love the way it looks on the model or in the shop window. Otherwise, you will end up with a closet full of clothes you don’t wear. If you don’t love it, don’t buy it.

Style is personal expression of who we are, each and every one of us. Be sure to keep your own unique taste and personality in mind when shopping for clothes. But also don’t be afraid to take some style risks as well. You might surprise yourself!

What is your personal style preference? Have you taken any style risks lately?

You always have such great personal style, Shelbee. This is great advice. I think it’s important to take from current trends, only what really speaks to us and incorporate a few into our style rather than having no style of our own and just following what ever is trending. I also like what you said about going with your gut. Often we see things and think wow, that’s perfect, I love it and that’s great. But how many times have we sort of talked ourselves into liking something because it’s popular or we want to like it for some other reason we can’t put our finger on… we never end up wearing those things much.

Julie, thanks so much for sharing your wonderful insight on this topic. I have a closet full of those things! I am slowly working my way through to clean out and focus on what really suits me now. My style changes frequently as well and I have a tendency to hang onto the things that I once loved but don’t so much anymore. It’s a problem that I need to work on…letting go! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Mireille, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I am always interested to hear what determines each person’s style. Everyone has a personal style, in my opinion, and they vary greatly. That is what keeps things interesting! I definitely do not need anything more and have been really quite good with shopping my closet the past few months. I hope I can keep up with that trend!

Some great tips Shelbee – you have a very natural and distinctive style and I admire how experimental you are, yet it always works! Great tos ee you at #WowOnWednesday.

An excellent post! I enjoy the sense of whimsy that subtly comes through in all of your outfits. My style started developing on its own accord once I retired and had very little governing my choices. It was a subconscious process. Until one day I realized I was filling my closet with items that once upon I would have thought were decidedly “not me.” LOL!

Michelle, thank you so much for this insightful comment. I have observed my style change over the years, so often dictated by my job and just my stage in life. These days I don’t have much dictating anything so I can get super creative with what I wear. I just like to have fun with clothing! I am glad that a sense of whimsy comes through my outfits. Have a wonderful weekend!
