Eggplant Inspiration & Link Up On the Edge #182
I know I talk about inspiration often, probably too often, but I guess it is our inspiration that gets us out of bed in the morning, pushes us to be creative, pulls at us to make a statement, motivates us to do things, something, anything. It could be as simple as what you are going to wear today. It could be something as monumental as how you plan on changing the world. Whatever it is, we find our inspiration all around us and sometimes in the very unlikeliest of places.
Like produce. You know, fruits and vegetables. Now I suppose if you are inspired to create a new recipe from some beautifully vibrant and organic produce that you spotted at the local farm market, that wouldn’t seem at all an unlikely place to find such inspiration. But when produce inspires your clothing, it might seem a little odd to some. But not everyone. Because there are lots of folks who appreciate discovering inspiration in unlikely places. I stumbled upon this Pinterest Board called Clothes Made of Vegetables, so clearly I am not the only one who can look at fresh produce and think about fashion.
To be fair, there is a part of my brain that is generally always thinking about fashion. I have been a person obsessed with clothing for as long as I can remember, always looking for fun and unique ways to create an outfit that will give me power when I step out of the safety of my home into the super scary world out there. My clothing has always been my battle armor, my self-expression, my creative outlet. It is my way of letting the world know that I may be timid and I may look a little different from everyone else but I will not be defeated. Even when I am not feeling bold and brave and badass, at least I can look like I feel that way and sometimes that is you all need in order to survive the day.
It is super easy to hide all of our insecurities underneath oversized dark and drab clothing. Believe me, I lived a lot of my youth hiding behind black baggy clothing. It gave me some sense of security. Granted, my statements were made in the details of my Gothic and grungy wardrobe like shredded tights layered under an oversized flannel shirt with pristine knee high combat boots. And while that may sound like the styling of a sad teenager filled with overwhelming levels of angst, I will still pull off some classic grunge and Goth looks even in the middle of my 40’s. Because I like it. And I will wear what I want when I want and it’s like a giant game of dress up. Every single day.
But today’s outfit was not inspired by teenage gloom, it was not inspired by a style prompt, it was not inspired by another blogger or a Pinterest photo. Today’s outfit was inspired by eggplant. Yes. Eggplant. That gorgeous nightshade plant that produces a beautiful purple spongy egg shaped fruit that is a popular ingredient in the culinary arts due to its ability to absorb all the oils and flavors that are prepared with it. Eggplant has inspired my outfit.
*A little botanical fact: although eggplants are often considered vegetables, they are fruits by their botanical classification.
It is believed that eggplant originated in India but it is currently grown worldwide. Eggplant is a delicate perennial plant that requires a tropical climate for its best growing environment. The flowers of the plant range in color from white to various shades of purple while the fruit itself generally appears in deeper tones of purple and aubergine to almost black, but you can also find white eggplant. But no matter the color or taste, these berries really are quite a lovely sight with their interesting shape and their rich hues. And that is where I found my inspiration.
I had this adorable purple skirt that I found while thrift shopping in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, during the holidays and when I got eggplant into my brain as my outfit inspiration, it was this skirt that started everything. I don’t have a lot of purply things in my wardrobe so I just sort of started putting all the purple things together. And while the colors were not perfect matches, it began reminding me of the image above of all the eggplants. The way these brilliant colors appear in nature are not perfectly matched either yet they still create a stunning display of luminosity in their saturated shades. So I just kept going…adding purple plaid, eggplant tights, aubergine boots. I actually do have a purple coat, but there are some lovely navy blue stripes in the plaid shirt that I also wanted to highlight. That is where the dark navy blazer and navy coat came into play.
Have you ever been inspired by produce? Or food? Or maybe some other unlikely thing has inspired you. I would love to hear about it.

Terri of Meadow Tree Style shared her post, The Versatility of a Long Cardigan. Posts that showcase different ways to style a single wardrobe piece are very popular because they can inspire us to think outside of the box when it comes to certain articles of clothing. Terri has a wonderful knack of creating functional and stylish outfits around closet staples that many of us already own. And these neutral shades of olive, brown, and black look so wonderful on her!

Kathrine of Kathrine Eldridge Wardrobe Stylist is totally tapping into my own style vibe with her edgy outfit in Poncho Sweater with a Side of Chanel. I love the black on black with an interesting mix of textures and then the addition of some bold color with her amazing over the knee boots. I am thinking I need to copy cat this outfit soon!

Ashleigh of Afternoon Talks really inspired and motivated me with her post, My Five Resolutions for the New Year. You might already know that I don’t really make resolutions, but the way Ashleigh has laid out a very different framework for resolution-making has me reconsidering my own way of setting goals for self improvement.

Thanks, Nancy! I thought it was kind of funny to be inspired by eggplant! But you know, I just go with the flow. And the eggplants seemed to be flowing! It looks like I will be snowed in for the weekend, so enjoying a quiet weekend at home. I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well!

Thank you very much, Kathrine! I think this is one of my favorite outfits. I loved being dressed in all this color especially on a snowy day. Also proof that what we wear really does affect our moods. And all these purples made me feel happy!

This color really suits you!! I think you are a True Winter coloring for sure. I get inspired by unusual ice cream shades in summer – think pale green pistachio, palest mango, hhhmmm roll on summer, ha-ha, 4 degrees here today on the Black Sea. Lise
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Lise! I do really like the winter colors, for sure. And I can totally see being inspired by ice cream shades in summer! I love that. Roll on summer, indeed! We are buried in snow and ice today in northern New York! Have a great weekend.

Eggplant is a cool shade of purple. I took a picture last year of eggplants at a farmer’s market just because the colors and stripes were so pretty. Don’t like to cook much with them though, lol! I have been looking at colors in my closet for spring and summer and what I do not have: teal and green are what I need to search for. Plus they are vibrant colors so will be the days brights! My 2 year old kept thinking he saw rabbits in the snow by your feet this morning! Today’s weather is probably the closest to snow we will get a little sleet .

Mireille, thanks for stopping by! I have always loved eggplant colors…I used to dye my hair aubergine many years ago! It was my favorite hair color ever. And I also am not a huge fan of eggplant for cooking. Every once in a while I will bread it and fry it but that is probably the only way that I even remotely enjoy eating eggplant. Teal and green are great colors to look for to spruce up the colors in your wardrobe! And we are currently getting buried in snow. Everything here is closed down today! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Shelbee, go ahead and talk about inspiration my friend. We need constant reminders and I love your outfit inspired by veggies. The tights, the shoes, the print…all so nice together. Have a wonderful weekend my friend!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, thanks so much, Chrissy! Sometimes, it is nice to move away from the heavier things in life and just talk about produce, right?! And while I am still sitting around in my jammies on this snow day we are having, the recollection of my very own eggplant outfit in the snow is cheering me up exponentially! I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well!

Love your commentary on inspiration and could not agree more about the diverse sources of inspiration. I really like the outfit you put together, but it is helped by my strong like for the color of eggplant. It is one of the colors that will appear in my closet and dresser drawers in varying shades along with a bounty of red! Have a great weekend!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Pam! It is such a great color palette, isn’t it? Purples and reds! I love both. And this was a fun deviation from my normal heavier topics into something a bit more light and fun and colorful to kick off the weekend!

Hi Shelbee!
I love love these colors on you! So good wiht your complexion and hair! I love eggplant! We used to laugh as when we got Blue Apron, one summer, every order contained eggplant! I love some eggplant parmasean. Anyhoo. Love the mixes of purples here with your coat and outfit. The fallen snow is pretty in your pics too!
Have a great weekend!

Thank you so much, Jess! I am not a huge fan of eating eggplant, but I do love the rich vibrant color of it! I did a weekly produce subscription one summer and we kept getting radishes. So many radishes. But we discovered all these wonderful ways to cook radishes and we became hooked! Ooh, maybe I need to create an outfit inspired by radishes now!
I took these pictures in the beginning of December, but they are perfect for today because we are currently having a massive snow storm. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Love the color of the eggplant plaid top. I’ve been posting plaid on my blog as well. The fur trim on your coat is divine. I love a hit of fur as an accent for fall and winter. It really only gets cold enough to wear fur in December-January here. Fall is usually really hot until mid-November. Great post today, Shelbee!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Shannon! I do love the furry things in winter, too, and winter here lasts about 10 months so I have quite a bit of fur in my wardrobe! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

You look so fabulous in eggplant! I know when I go through the farmers’ markets I notice all of the beautiful, brilliant colors – bright yellow squashes, purple eggplant, green/red/orange peppers – what’s not to inspire? I’ve never really thought about wearing eggplant much, but it’s really a gorgeous range of purples and now I want to go out and buy something in some of the shades. You have a lot of different purples that work together just beautifully, and I love the way you’ve paired the navy coat (with those fabulous fur cuffs) with it. Now, I thought the jacket you were wearing was gray – at any rate, whatever color it is, it was made to go with eggplant! I love that you have booties and tights in the color, too. Thank you so much for the link party!

Thanks so much, Ruth! The farmers’ market really is a great place to find all sorts of inspiration from the vibrant colors of fresh produce to all the gorgeous crafts that vendors bring to my local market. I need to create more food inspired outfits! And yeah, my blazer is like a really dark navy with tiny white pinstripes…that is probably what makes it look gray in the photos. I bought the blue coat last winter and I have worn quite it a bit. I didn’t have a navy coat and I wear a lot that coordinates with it. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

I love this colour Shelbee! Your coat is gorgeous, the faux fur on the sleeves is a fabulous detail. I also spent my teens and early 20s wearing mostly black because I didn’t have the confidence to wear colour…how times have changed!

Thank you, Emma! The furry cuffs are removable as well and then it is a classic 3/4 sleeve coat. Although I have never taken the cuffs off because they make the coat special. I do still like an all black outfit in my 40’s, but injecting lots of color is necessary as well! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Mica
What a fun purple outfit, it’s amazing you have so many pieces to be able to pull this together! I think the only colour I could wear head to toe like this would be blue, haha! 🙂 It’s fun you got inspiration from a vegetable too! 🙂 You look great!
Hope that you are having a nice weekend! It’s a quiet one here as we have a lot more rain – but can’t complain, it’s nice to have cooler weather and we are not at risk for flooding 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Mica! I don’t have very much purple in my wardrobe, but what I did have seemed to work well together. I think I want to create more vegetable inspired outfits! It was silly but fun. I am glad that you are finally getting the rain you needed. We have been snowed in all weekend with no internet yesterday, so it has been super relaxing this weekend so far.

Thanks, Michelle! You are right about purple being super hard to find. It is one of the colors that I sometimes love and sometimes it just doesn’t appeal to me. But there are definitely certain shades of purple that I grab when I see them! Green, like true green not olive green, is really hard to find as well and that is my forever favorite color.
