All About Hats & Your Own Twist Link Up #48
If you haven’t noticed by now, I kind of have a thing for hats (and of course, kimonos…but that you surely knew already). So for September’s Your Own Twist with Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart, we decided to focus our styling efforts on hats.
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
As you can see from the schedule of past and upcoming themes, we choose these ideas and announce them months in advance. So it was pure serendipity that we had already planned to share All About Hats when my best goddess friend brought back this gorgeous Panama hat for me from her recent trip to Texas. She has told me that she loves the way I look wearing a side braid and a head topper so she went ahead and indulged her own fancy while simultaneously indulging my hat obsession!
I think this might be my very first Panama hat as it is not a hat silhouette that I thought looked good on me. Boy, was I wrong! This hat is freaking fabulous and looks perfectly fine on me! But it is less the style itself that I love and more the gorgeous painted leaf design on the brim in turquoise, navy, and gold. Isn’t it so pretty?!
I love the combination of shades of blue with brown tones so I decided to keep my outfit in all of those same colors. I recently scored this beautiful caramel colored paisley free flow kimono from a new shop in our local mall, Loft 15. I spotted it in the front store window in blush pink as I was school shopping with my boys and mother-in-law and I had to go in and at least try it on.
Much to my disappointment, the blush pink look absolutely horrendous on me. Well, maybe not absolutely horrendous, but I definitely was not sold on it. Which rarely happens when it comes to kimonos! Luckily, it was also available in this caramel brown shade which didn’t really appeal to me at first until I tried it on. Then I was sold on it and willing to pay the $40 price tag. But in the end with a 20% flash sale going on plus a 10% military discount, I ended up getting it for just under $30. I am so glad that I went for it because it is a stunning kimono that I suspect will get much wear this fall season. It is also available in a lovely shade of pale grey which is on my kimono radar now along with the Wildflower Wanderer Kimono, the Finish My Story Kimono, and the Adrift Memories Kimono.
By the way, Loft 315 is a female owned small business so purchasing through the website is a great way to support women in small business. They offer a large selection of both women’s and men’s trending apparel at affordable prices with new inventory being released every Tuesday and Thursday.
The hat and kimono are two of my new favorite things…along with these fabulous wooden animal motif necklaces that I found at the State Street Market, which is a 15,000 square foot shopping venue housing over 60 different vendors selling all sorts of interesting items from preloved clothing and accessories to handmade furniture to cakes and candies to bath products to vintage and antique everything. It is a super fun place to shop and I was very excited to find these “Frankie” necklaces! The longer one was $7 and the shorter one was $6.
Since I do love to share my thrifty finds, both my dress and my cowboy boots were also preloved purchases from local thrift shops. I had previously styled this dress with these same boots for a Thrifty Six post on Boho Mania last summer. And the dress made a second appearance for Style Imitating Art: The Great Mystery of Water by Christi Belcourt in the spring. I paid $8 for the dress and $7 for the boots proving that you can build a versatile wardrobe on a budget just by shopping secondhand. Toss in some new statement pieces like a bold hat and a dramatic kimono and I think I have a winning outfit for transitioning from summer to fall in style.
And there you have it…All About Hats is actually all about my new hat, kimono, and Frankie necklaces! To read more details about Monica’s hat flashbacks, hop over to Jersey Girl, Texan Heart on Instagram. Monica is currently dealing with some massively annoying home repairs so she will be keeping it short and sweet on IG for this month’s Your Own Twist party. So be sure to add your posts to the link party below before you go. And do let me know in the comments if you wear hats and what styles are your favorite. I would love to hear all about the hat preferences of others!

What a surprise to find ourselves featured Shelbee….thanks for that.
I had to laugh when you said that about that hat shape not being good on you. I think it takes us a couple of times to get used to hats and different shaped ones at that. But after awhile, I think they ALL look good. It’s a matter of training our eye, right?
And I’m loving the cowboy boots. SO much so that I even bought a pair that wasn’t thrifted (who am I? LOL)

Thanks so much, Jodie! I think you are right…it does take some time to adjust to new shapes of anything. The same thing happens when I get new glasses with a different shape. And the shape of my glasses sometimes doesn’t coordinate with my hat style so I have to pay attention to that and change my glasses accordingly!
The only thing better than a great pair of thrifted cowboy boots is a brand new pair when they still have that scrumptious new leather smell! I hope you wear your new boots for our upcoming Magnificent 8 collaboration!

You do have quite the amazing kimono collection, and they are all so uniquely beautiful. And you’ve just given me another way to wear my teal duster…with brown! Those colors look great together.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Amy! It is definitely an addiction of some sort…these kimonos of mine! I have a hard time resisting new ones. Teal and brown is such a great color combination for fall. Your new duster is going to prove to be very versatile, I expect!

Shelbee, you look stunning in the blue/brown combination! I love that particular color scheme…I think it brings out the Earth Mother in me! I couldn’t figure out what Frankie necklaces were (Grace & Frankie, right), but they are fabulous! I can see why you had to have them! And, that hat! Never think you can’t wear that style…you most definitely can! Love this entire look…one of my favorites! Thanks for the link party, too!

Aw, thanks so much, Marsha! Now that you know what Frankie necklaces are, isn’t a brilliant way to identify this particular style of necklaces?! The one I got from April Cornell in Burlington fits into the Frankie category perfectly! And there is something special about turquoise and brown that really appeals to me, too.

Your Panama hat is such a nice accessory for the maxi dress and long kimono. I like the lovely colors in the leaves painted on the brim — quite unique.
