Adventures in Thrifting Part 19: Blue and White Cotton Dress & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #765

I went on a little thrifting adventure a few weeks ago in search of green dishes. After finishing my dining set makeover, I decided that I want to replace my current set of dishes with a mismatched set of secondhand dishes…all in some shade of green. It will take some time but I do enjoy the hunt so I don’t mind. I did buy a few green dishes to start my collection but I don’t plan on photographing them until my collection is complete.

Regardless of what I’m looking for when I embark on a thrifting adventure, there are a few areas that I always check…the first being dresses. I also always walk through the shoes, all of the housewares, the furniture, and the linens (bedding, curtains, etc.). But as far as secondhand clothing goes, dresses are my favorite. I do love when I find a secondhand kimono robe but those are rare discoveries. Dresses are abundant in thrift stores and I almost always find a few to add to my closet so it is generally my first stop upon entering the shop.

On the day of this particular thrifting adventure, I happened to be wearing this red floral cotton dress that I had bought at the same thrift shop two years ago. As I was browsing through the dress rack, I happened upon two cotton dresses with prints that I really liked…this blue one which has a sort of batik/tie dye pattern and a dark red one with a paisley-ish/floral print. Upon closer examination, I recognized that both dresses were not only the same style as the dress I was wearing, but they were also the same brand. The only difference is the red floral dress doesn’t have buttons and the two new ones have a few buttons at the neckline to create a henley style. I tried them both on and love the way they fit and feel. One of them was $7.99 and the other was on clearance for $0.99 so I bought them both, of course.

I had planned on wearing this new blue dress to celebrate the 4th of July but I ended up in my painting clothes all weekend. If I had gotten dressed up to honor our nation’s independence, however, this is the outfit I would have worn.

To give it a patriotic touch, I styled my new preloved dress with red and white accessories including my ivory kimono robe with the mandala pattern, my dark red rope sandals, two flea market necklaces in dark red, my red wooden phoenix earrings, and my blue, red, and white elephant hat.

I felt festive and bold and summery and, most importantly, comfortable. My summer outfit formula never seems to fail me. It feels like I’m wearing pajamas except I’m wearing pretty dresses and robes! And thrift stores are the best place to fulfill my new dress cravings. There will be more thrifty dresses coming next week. Have a spectacular weekend!

Gosh, thrift shops must be better in other places of the country because I never find any clothing items worthwhile at thrift shops. You find the cutest things! Thanks for the party.

My area is known for its amazing thrift shops! I think it might have something to do with the large military community here. Our thrift stores get all sorts of variety from people who move here from all over the country. And I really only visit one or two in my area although we have quite a few more than that around here. Yard sales are great, too, except I rarely get around to those. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

Shelby, you are as cute as a button! Your thrift bought dress is adorable. I enjoy going to the thrift store in the town I work. In fact the just opened another store and moved all of the furniture to the new location (just across the street 🙂 ) I like buying dressers. Seems like I can not have too many of those. Painting the dressers, nothing fancy. Once painted I have glass cut for the top. Then when I put a lamp on the dresser top, the paint does not peel off! I probably do not reburish the proper way. But the end results sure look nice.

Thanks so much, Debra! Oh, I love painting old furniture! I refurbished two dressers into my food pantry storage. But I have to control myself when it comes to buying old furniture unless I have a specific purpose for it. Otherwise, I might buy it all! When I paint furniture, I always apply a coat of furniture wax when I am finished. It keeps the paint from peeling. But I also lightly distress everything so that it hides any new scratches or marks that may occur later. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

What fabulous deals! You WOULD have looked very festive in that for the 4th.. if you hadn’t been busy painting.

I would love to go thrifting with you! I think we would probably spend more time laughing than money, though! I hope you find lots and lots of green dishes. Your dining room is so cool now with that gorgeous table!

I love this outfit, especially the necklaces. I just read that women over 50 should kinda cut down on their accessories. Gosh, I feel badly going against that advice…hahaha! I love my accessories and the more the merrier, right?

Have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

Oh ym gosh, Marsha, we would have so much fun on a thrifting adventure! When I go with my sister, we definitely laugh as much as we buy! Hahaha. Women over 50 should do and wear whatever the heck they want! The day before my 50th birthday is the last time I gave one little f*ck about what people think about my personal style. I will wear all the accessories at once if these ridiculous rules come in my direction! Have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

It’s great to wear dresses like that in summer! I also love a particular brand of dresses and buy them pre loved a lot. Enjoy your weekend and I will see you on Tuesday!

I’ve got a couple of friends who I occasionally join to do a trawl around the second hand shops but I’m not a master!!! I think British people are basically mean and they don’t like to give much away but perhaps in some other areas the pickings are better!! However, I do love to pick up odd bits of china and glassware so I too am looking forward to seeing your green dishes.

Thanks so much, Pamela! We have really great secondhand shops around here and the people are generally really kind! I am so sorry that you have encountered meanness and stingy people! I am excited to share my green dish collection…once I have it all collected! Have a lovely weekend, my friend.
