Ugly Holiday Sweaters & Your Own Twist Link Up #39
Well, I don’t know that you can really call them Ugly Holiday Sweaters when some of them are just too darn cute. In any event, Monica and I chose this as our December theme for Your Own Twist and we invite you to share your holiday style with us below in the link up. Monica’s sweet little daughter has joined her in the cutest holiday onesie for her first Christmas. So be sure to check out Monica’s post, too!
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
When so-called ugly holiday sweaters became a trend, I was really not on-board with it. I do find certain obnoxious things in fashion to be wonderfully appealing to my quirkiness; however, over the top, gaudy, boisterous holiday themed clothing was never really my thing. But I have been embracing how much fun I can have by putting my own twist on things. And so ugly holiday sweaters have transitioned into cute holiday sweaters in Shelbee’s Big Book of Fashion. (There really is no such book, but maybe there should be.)
Over the past 5 or 6 years, I have accumulated a small but steady collection of holiday and winter themed sweaters that I generally reach for whenever a so-called ugly sweater is required. But I don’t think I would call any of them ugly. Cute, silly, festive, and pretty, perhaps. But never ugly. I don’t do ugly.
So let’s talk about my not-so-ugly ugly holiday sweater. It’s another Torrid clearance find, along with these plaid leggings, from the end of last winter season. I am more of a cat person than a dog person, but I could not resist the sweet little Corgi in his red striped scarf. While it’s not specifically a holiday themed sweater…more of a winter seasonal theme…I wore it anyway because this is about putting my own twist on things! I have never really been one to stick strictly to the rules as they are stated anyway. I do enjoy reading between the lines and finding new ways to look at things. That goes for everything, not just style prompts and challenges, by the way.
As for the rest of my festive winter outfit, I needed some cold weather layers to stay warm. The Corgi’s scarf is sort of a reddish-orange so it was difficult to match an underneath layer. I went with this deep orange thrifted men’s button down because I like the way the shirt tails stick out from beneath the sweater and properly cover my leggings-clad bum. There are some hints of dark green in the plaid of the leggings that matched my green leather moto jacket perfectly and these new Shoe Dazzle boots have been logging some serious steppage lately. They are so comfortable and lightweight and the lug sole is so good for North Country winters. An ivory pom pom hat and dangly pearl earrings finish off this look that had me bouncing almost as high as this festive outfit.
I have been rediscovering my love for leggings this season. When I did my big closet clean out last year, I ditched almost every pair of leggings I owned except two black pairs, one bird print pair, and a few for working out. Most of them didn’t fit me anyway so they needed to go. But then I realized how much I appreciate the ease of creating a cute and cozy cold weather outfit that is built on leggings and I slowly started acquiring a small collection of new leggings. Most are plaid but I did grab a sequined pair and a faux leather pair which I will be sharing soon.
What is your holiday style this season? Do share with us in the link party below! But before you do, remember that my giveaway for Angel Readings by Brooke is still open for entries. Just visit the link and enter through the Rafflecopter at the bottom of the post. And have a wonderful holiday season!

I have no idea why they call them ugly sweaters either, they are always cute. Although I have none. And on the legging part I totally agree. I have only one black and one patent. I need to buy some more, they are so cozy and warm. See you in a minute!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Nancy! Some of the holiday sweaters can be over the top ugly. But who wants to wear something ugly on purpose? I will always go the cute or pretty route before I go shoot for ugly! That was a fun chat! See you in January for our next one!

Oh, I think your sweater is so cute! I used to have a granddog that looked just like it! I have to admit I’ve been irritated by the whole ugly Christmas sweater thing. My post on Tuesday was about my collection of Christmas sweaters. They are definitely not ugly! Those plaid leggings are so cute…I may go on the hunt for some!

Marsha, thanks so much! There is definitely a distinction to be made between ugly Christmas sweaters and cute ones. The ones that are truly “Ugly Christmas sweaters” to me are the horribly garish over the top crazy LED lit ones that are really very ugly. But then I think you wear them once or twice for a laugh and they become part of the landfill problem. I think the cute ones and the pretty ones are much more versatile and can be worn for years and years. I like to a few nice ones in rotation each year. I have to go check out your Tuesday post! I think I might write a similar one next week!

I love this outfit! I just purchased my first “ugly” Christmas sweater this year and have yet to actually wear mine. But I have been thinking of starting my own collection as well as some of them are pretty cute.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Joanne! Some of them are really super cute. I have a few cute ones, but most of mine are more pretty than even cute. I should put together a round up post of all my holiday sweaters for next week. I look forward to seeing your new one and watch as your collection grows!

It’s the one time of the year that we can get away with : ugly, cute, garish, over the top, downright crazy ; who cares, if we ever needed Christmas fun it’s this year! Enjoy it all!!

I agree with you completely, Pamela! But I apply that sentiment all year round! If my clothing makes me smile, all the better for me and the people I smile at, right? Haha. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, my friend!

OMG! Neither yours nor Monica’s sweater are ugly. (But who is really looking at Monica’s sweater anyway while she’s holding the new baby? 😄) I adore this outfit, Shelbee! Totally adorable. The plaid leggings are so awesome? Where did you get them? Pinning. Thanks for the inspiration!

Aw, thanks so much, Michelle! I know, these sweaters really aren’t ugly at all. But you know, it’s just our own twist on the theme! Hahaha. Isn’t Scarlett the sweetest little blogger bebe?! I got my leggings from Torrid. They always have really cute plaid ones this time of year!

I agree! I love ugly sweaters. I think they are so darn adorable. I love your sweater and how you styled it. The shirt peeking through is such a fun idea and the plaid leggings make it more festive for this season. We don’t have a lot going on this holiday season. Just snuggling with the little guy and celebrating my mom’s birthday. So I foresee a lot of pajama wearing days!

Thanks so much, Maureen! This outfit made me very happy and definitely helps get me in a more festive mood! I foresee lots of pajama days in the next two weeks around here as well. I hope you have a lovely holiday and enjoy all the snuggle time. And a very happy birthday to your mom!

Got to love a good ugly sweater, although I think the one you’re wearing is far from that.
Thank you for linking with #pocolo and wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks so much, Suzanne! I agree that my sweater is definitely cute and not ugly! But it was my own twist on the theme and I don’t like to purposely wear ugly things! Haha. Merry Christmas to you!

That cute little corgi could never be described as ugly! I like the idea of ugly sweaters because it amuses me to think of the fashionistas – Anna Wintour et al- becoming apoplectic. Great styling! I’m interested in joining the linkup with the same prompts- you’ll need to explain what January’s is about….
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Gail! I agree that my corgi sweater is cute and not ugly! That’s what this little Your Own Twist link up is about. Haha. January’s theme is Opposite Day and you can basically interpret that however you want! I am not even sure what I am going to do for it yet. Maybe black and white or masculine style or maybe socks on my hands and gloves on my feet! LOL
To join us, you can either just write your own post and add it to the link party. Or if you want to co-host with us, that is an option, too! For that, you still just write your post and publish on the same day as us with the link code. I would just need a photo of you a day or two before the post to make a collage. If you want to co-host, let me know and I can email more details to you!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
