The Thrifty Six in Summer Layers

Welcome to The Thrifty Six. We are a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

Last month, we welcomed Sally as the newest member of our thrifty group. So this month, it is was her first turn at choosing our monthly style theme. Being a layering guru with a real knack for finding a thrifty bargain, Sally chose Summer Layers as our June challenge.

Being a layering guru myself, I was nothing short of excited for the ease of achieving the stated goal. Create a summer outfit with layers using preloved or thrifted clothing.

So easy. I have about a million options in my wardrobe to successfully complete this challenge. I pondered a few different outfit combinations incorporating some really cute kimono robes I recently found at a local thrift store for just a few dollars each.

But then, the week before my birthday, I received an email from Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks. She was cleaning out her closet and wanted to send me some of her unwanted garments that she thought I might enjoy, particularly Kantha Bae pieces. Having discovered the Kantha Bae brand through Daenel’s blog and being inspired by her easy bohemian style for years, I was happy to accept her generous gift…it felt like an extra special gift for my 50th birthday, too!

Daenel had indicated that she was sending me approximately seven garments so I was surprised when a very large box arrived at my house just a few days after my birthday. I quickly called my sister on video to join me as I opened this special birthday gift.

Be. Still. My. Heart. It was filled to the brim with all sorts of gorgeous garments from Kantha Bae and other similar style brands that speak directly to my bohemian soul. I tried on every single piece for my sister and we both loved every single piece. My sis is currently trying to talk me out of a few pieces so that I pass them on to her. But she will have to wait until I tire of them before she gets her thieving sibling hands on them!

Once I saw all the wonderful goodness inside this box of magic from Daenel, I immediately changed my approach to Sally’s Summer Layering challenge. I was just gifted a whole wardrobe of beautiful preloved clothing that was meant to be worn and layered together.

I used three gifted garments to create a really cool triple layered summer outfit with a long skirt layered underneath a short dress layered underneath a boxy top. After we took photos of this layered look, I decided to share some variations of mixing and matching these three pieces. I ended up photographing five different ways that I can style these three garments. But there are actually many more ways because the skirt and the dress are both reversible with completely different patterns on the opposite sides giving even more versatility to these already versatile pieces.

How do I wear preloved summer layers? Let me count the ways.

1. Long skirt layered underneath short dress layered underneath boxy top.

My seed bead necklace and earrings were both purchased at a flea market and my Shelbee mala beads were handmade by Katherine of Zen Spirit Malas. My rope sandals, straw hat, and short mushroom necklace are the only parts of this ensemble that have not been preloved by anyone else. They have only been loved by me!

Check out this adorable crocheted water bottle bag I found in a thrift shop in North Carolina. There is a purple one, too. I bought them for $1 each and I can’t wait to use them this week at Smoked Country Jam. It is going to be brutally hot so I will need water bottles strapped to my body at all times!
2. Short dress layered underneath boxy top.

I simply shed the skirt and bared my legs for this easy layered look.

3. Just the dress. No layers here.

I ditched the top and was left with an easy breezy sundress. Remember the dress is reversible. You can see the reverse side here where I belted it.

4. Long skirt layered underneath short dress.

Then I put the skirt back on! I could reverse the skirt and the dress for different combinations as well.

5. Long skirt with boxy top.

This outfit doesn’t really constitute a layered outfit but it does allow you to see the reverse side of the skirt and the cute little pull up ties on the sides.

And there you have it. Five outfits with three preloved garments. I think I am taking all of this to the festival on Thursday. Thank you again, Daenel! I have been wearing all of it with so much joy and love!

Now let’s see how my thrifty friends have styled their preloved summer layers.

“This summer the weather has been very disappointing so far, so I’m rarely without a cardigan. I’ve bought a few on Vinted recently, including this long one by Forever Unique. As I have a lot of pink and orange clothes, it’s a really useful addition to my wardrobe. I’m hoping I won’t need it too much over the next couple of months though!”

“The T6 theme for June is ‘Summer Layering’…
…I’m layering two sheer pieces to create one elegant evening outfit.
The first layer is gossamer fine; for decency, it could never be worn “sans-slip”…
…the second layer is a negligee and on it’s own, that’s quite obvious.
Both are pure silk and together they’re just perfect for a summer evening soiree…”

“I was totally excited how I could layer this DIY denim midi skirt over this lilac tulle skirt. I’ve seen some similar pairing on Pinterest and I wanted to try it out. The denim skirt was originally a mini denim skirt and I thrifted a pair of jeans to add the length to it (that’s why it’s two different washes). Then the T-shirt, shoes, pearls and purse all preloved!”

“I think this is my favourite summer layer piece. Btw, the one season layers are all cardigans for me, and the next season it’s jackets and blazers. For a year or two it’s jackets and blazers. This lovely linen jacket is from Vinted and is from the brand I used to work for. We also had trousers and skirts to go with the blazer. This jacket has 2 very large buttons and a band to tie it with and a beautiful silvery trim along the edges. I love this jacket. A layer, but not a very warm one. But sometimes you just don’t care!”

“My favorite summer layering piece is a lightweight cotton or linen button up shirt, worn open with the sleeves rolled up over a sleeveless top.  Something about the simplicity of it and the easy, relaxed, slightly rough-around-the-edges vibe feels perfect for a laid-back summer day.  I wear this denim shirt from ThredUp in every season of the year.”

“Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks recently cleaned out her closet and she very generously sent me a big box of beautiful preloved pieces that she no longer wanted and knew I would love. When I opened the box, be still my heart, it was filled with Kantha Bae pieces that all mix and match in the most wonderful way…perfect for this thrifty challenge of summer layers. I am wearing a reversible skirt under a reversible dress under a cute little boxy poncho style top..all from Daenel’s magical closet! I have styled fivedifferent outfits with these three pieces on my blog but there are many more ways I could wear them, too! I do love being the recipient of gorgeous hand-me-downs. Thanks so much, Daenel! I have been wearing these pieces every day since I received them two weeks ago. What a wonderful way to give new life to your old garments, don’t you think?”
-Shelbee

Be sure to check back on July 15, 2024, for our next challenge. Jodie has chosen Dark Colors as the theme. This should be a fun challenge as most of us steer away from dark colors in July.

These pieces layer MAGNIFICENTLY! I am astonished by Daenel’s generosity, but she definitely picked the perfect person to bestow these gorgeous boho garments to. What a lovely set of mix-and-matchable pieces to play with this summer!

I am one lucky lady! I was so excited to receive Daenel’s hand me downs! I even told her that if something didn’t suit me, I would pass it on to you, but it all suited me! Actually, there wasn’t much in the box that screamed “Marsha” to me anyway. Probably because it was mostly kantha cloth stuff!

What a fun prompt! You know I love my layers. Everything looks so perfect on you. Honestly, I never would’ve come up with the combinations that you did. So lovely. I hope you’re able to share with your sister.

Daenel, thank you again for such a wonderful gift! I wore the short dress this weekend at the festival and I received so many compliments on it. And then I told each person who complimented me how you sent me the great big box of magical clothing! I will definitely share with my sister…once I am done enjoying all of it! Haha.
