The Thrifty Six in Fool’s Gold
This month it was Nancy‘s turn to choose a theme for our thrifty group and she went for Fool’s Gold. The term fool’s gold originally referred to the mineral iron pyrite which has a metallic luster and a pale brassy yellowish hue often mistaken for actual gold. Eventually the term transitioned to an idiom that means a flashy but otherwise worthless investment. Kind of appropriate for a thrifty theme, I think. Not very many of my thrifted items have any value at all other than they are super cute additions to my very rich wardrobe! Perhaps a worthless investment but there is value in the way my new preloved clothing makes my soul feel extraordinary happiness!
When it came to styling this theme, I was a little bit stumped, however, because I don’t own very many gold pieces in my wardrobe and even fewer that are thrifted. I contemplated restyling this gold thrifted bodycon dress but such a dress has very few styling options other than to change out my shoes and jewelry. Before I settled for that option, I thought I might go on a little thrifting adventure in search of some fool’s gold. I don’t ever mind an excuse to go shopping, you know.
And then I remembered this gold satin blouse with a leopard motif that I found on my last thrifting adventure. It had made its way to the bottom of a closet pile and so I had completely forgotten about it until I went digging around in the mess looking for something else. I don’t recall what I was looking for or if I even found it, but I squealed a bit when I pulled out this forgotten Zara blouse!
When I first brought this blouse home, I tried a few different ways of styling it, but didn’t like anything that I created and so I tossed the thing aside until the perfect opportunity came along to really get creative with it. That’s how it made its way to the bottom of the closet pile. How serendipitous that it resurfaced when it did! With the fool’s gold theme, I knew that I also wanted to add some metallic things into the outfit whether in my accessories, jewelry, or even hardware on clothing.
I recently picked up this adorably sassy faux leather mini skirt in burgundy from my local consignment shop. All the shiny zippers and buckles seemed to fit the theme nicely except they are silver instead of gold! But then I added a gold sequined clutch which I thrifted a while back, gold statement jewelry, and a pair of burgundy ankle boots with gold heels.
Once I put the whole outfit together, I couldn’t decide which clutch bag I liked the best even though the gold sequined one matched the theme best. So I took photos with all three…the gold sequined clutch, the furry mustard clutch, and the furry leopard wristlet. Which one do you prefer?
Now let’s see how my thrifty friends are showcasing their Fool’s Gold.
The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

“I was really stuck for something gold that’s preloved – which surprised me given how much I buy second hand. But then I remembered this sequin dress that I bought on eBay a couple of years ago. I wore it for another Thrifty Six theme last year, along with the same earrings and shoes…that’s being really thrifty I guess!”

“I went thrifting a lot in the past month—and in Las Vegas no less—but I couldn’t find anything gold that I absolutely loved. I ended up wearing this hand-me-down gold threaded mock-neck for a super chic outfit, something I could see myself wearing to New York Fashion Week if I was cool enough. I stood in front of the mirror a long time trying to decide if the gold top clashed with the brown shorts, but I ultimately thought it was a stylish combo. And of course, I had to top the outfit off with my favorite shoes ever—snakeskin Valentino Rockstud dupes. I felt like a million bucks!”

“All that glitters is not gold…sometimes worthless things sparkle – but true quality has brilliance! In life and in fashion, the difference is clear! This dress is pure silk, rich and magnificent…It’s enough, it needs no more; no synthetic spangle, no vulgar bling. Less is more, a triumph for the understated! So…do you know shit from Shinola? – Can you tell Pyrite from Aurum? Know it at a glance and know you have style!”

“What could be better for a Leo girl than styling up some gold?! Right in my element with this shiny tube top layered under a lamé jacket- paired with cutest teeny purse! Can never pass up gold finds on my thrill of the thrift hunts!”

“This is my birthday month. The 31st. So I actually wanted a theme with my zodiac sign, Virgo. But no matter how I searched, I couldn’t find a connection anywhere for my zodiac sign and a pre-loved outfit. I could have done a photo of a dress and dustpan and dustpan in hand, because everywhere it says that the virgin is very tidy, and that’s true, but I didn’t like that very much. And then I got to gold, and then to fools gold. Gold, because I love clothes with gold, gold boots, gold buttons, gold thread etc. And fools gold because I bought this dress a long time ago and I don’t know how to style it. So the dress kinda fools me.”

And me!
“I had forgotten about this amazing gold satin blouse with little leopards all over it that I had found on my last thrifting adventure. So this was the winner for a Fool’s Gold theme! I paired it with a recently thrifted faux leather mini skirt in burgundy (with silver zipper and buckles…I wish they were gold!). I also had a thrifted gold sequined clutch, but I couldn’t decide between 3 different bags so I photographed the outfit with all 3. Tell me which one is best! I loaded up on gold accessories—all fake costume gold…just like fool’s gold!”

You has such a great ability to mix and match unique pieces and this outfit looks simply fabulous! The statement necklace was the perfect accessory to add to this look! I just love it! And those boots!!
As for the bag, my choice would be the golden sequin clutch. I like how the color blends in a bit more while coordinating so well with the golden heels, blouse and jewelry. And it looks fabulous against the burgundy skirt, while not taking away attention from the rest of these gorgeous pieces. But the other bags do look nice with it too!

Ellie, thanks so much! I am so happy with how this outfit turned out! Now I need somewhere sassy and fun to wear it. I am thinking it would look awesome in the fall with some burgundy tights for an elongating monochromatic effect. After looking at the photos, I think I do like the gold sequin clutch the best as well. It does look great against the burgundy leather! I hope your week is off to a fabulous start!

Ha! I know it sounds weird, but I wouldn’t have thought of gold and burgundy. But it really is a lovely combination. While most of the metal I wear is jewelry, I do like metal embellishments. I have 2 pairs of jeans that have 3 metal (copper I think) adorning the outer seam at the bottom of each leg.

Thanks, Michelle! My burgundy boots with gold heels made the combination super easy! Ha. I really like the richness of these two colors together as well. And your copper adorned pants sound really freaking cool!

Ooh, I am a huge fan of your outfit, Shelbee! I love the blouse (leopards!), the miniskirt (eh, no one cares that the metals don’t match, trust me), the boots! I am in favour of the sequined clutch, followed by the leopard, then the mustard (which I like, but feels too yellow for this look).
I adore metallics and gold – I’m wearing a metalic sequined skirt today!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Sheila! I nearly swooned over the little leopards all over this blouse! And I don’t mind at all that my metals don’t match, I just kind of thought gold would be better just because that was the theme! Haha. I guess I don’t always need to be so gosh darn literal! A metallic sequined skirt sounds amazing! I can’t wait to see it!

Fabulous outfit, gold and burgundy is such a great pairing, and Grace obviously agrees. The jewelry brings the colors together and the darling scrap of furry leopard is perfect.
