The Thrifty Six Get Dressed Up for Winter Weddings

Jane chose this month’s thrifty theme with celebrations of love in mind! Since it is also the holiday season, all of these wedding inspired outfits could also be worn to festive Christmas parties or elegant New Year’s Eve events as well. ‘Tis the season to bring out your favorite fancy clothes and feel fabulous in the midst of the holiday craze and winter sickness season.

Speaking of sickness season, Covid finally caught us. My little family of four has managed to avoid the virus for almost four years until two weeks ago. It caught Ralph first but we never tested him. He missed two days of school, a Thursday and a Friday, with a moderate fever. He was also tired and lethargic which usually happens with a fever, but he had no other symptoms to report. He rested through the weekend and even managed a road trip to visit the grandparents for an early Christmas celebration. He returned to school that Monday symptom-free and feeling back to normal. I assumed it was just a random virus as it passed quickly without much incident.

Then on Wednesday, I spiked a fever with some body aches that lasted about 48 hours and then I felt fine. So I still didn’t test anyone. On Saturday, Jeff and I attended his Christmas work party and in the middle of it, Jeff started feeling unwell. We left early and he had a fever when we got home. On Sunday morning, I started feeling kind of crummy again but still just assumed it was regular ole winter germs making their rounds through my house.

On Monday, I noticed that I could not smell or taste anything. I wouldn’t have thought anything of that symptom either if I was experiencing any kind of head congestion. But I wasn’t congested at all. Everything was clear and I was breathing fine. So I stuck my nose in the vinegar bottle to test it out and nothing. I could smell nothing at all. That is when I knew it was Covid.

I tested all four of us to discover that Jeff, Archie, and I were all positive but Ralph’s test was negative. I continued to monitor and test Ralph all through the week and he remained negative which has led me to conclude that it all started with him.

Finally, after about 7 days of feeling completely and totally wiped out, we are all starting to come back to life. The symptoms for me have been very reminiscent of when I had mono 35 years ago. Other than loss of taste and smell, it has really just been complete and total body exhaustion. I didn’t know if I would even feel strong enough to get dressed and take some photos for this post, but I managed. I didn’t leave my backyard for obvious reasons (I was likely still contagious and I was too tired to travel very far from home anyway). So please forgive the poor quality of, well, everything in this post. This is me with Covid!

Enough about sickness. What thrifty outfit would I wear to a winter wedding? A gold lace body con dress, some sassy heels, a gold sequined clutch, and a fur coat…all purchased second hand at various thrift and consignment shops near me. There is no need to spend a fortune on a fancy outfit that you only wear for special occasions. And this dress is a fabulous fancy staple to keep in my closet for last minute dressy events. It’s comfortable. It’s easy to style. And it seems to fit me through a whole range of weight changes. I wore it three years ago when I was 25 pounds heavier and felt great in it. And I still feel fabulous in this dress even with a wicked virus.

I have no special events to attend this holiday season, but it was really fun to get dressed up just for the heck of it!

Now let’s check out how my thrifty friends would dress up for a winter wedding.

The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

“A luxe trouser suit is a great alternative to a dress for a winter wedding. I’d been dreaming of getting my hands on this one from the Iris Apfel x H&M collection ever since I missed out when everything sold out in a matter of minutes. Refusing to pay silly prices on eBay, I played the waiting game – for a very long time – and managed to buy the trousers first, then the jacket, and finally the shoes most recently on Vinted. I found the Zara green frilly blouse in an Oxfam shop in Nottingham – new with tags. My bag is also from Zara, bought on a trip to Madeira.”

“I’ve never been to a winter wedding before, and I’ve been told red is a no-go at weddings (so this thrifted BCBG Max Azria dress wasn’t an option). I decided on this black number instead, which I found for $1 and in just my size. It has velvet and sparkles—very festive, indeed! I paired it with a hand-me-down pearl clutch and vintage snowflake clip-on earrings. Thankfully it was an unseasonably warm day when I took these pics, as I don’t have a matching thrifted coat!”

“Cowboy boots are all the rage right now, and I figured I could dress these up to answer the question of can you wear boots to a wedding. I decided to go with a neutral outfit and then add interest with the boots and other accessories in green.
The only thing that isn’t thrifted are my glasses and ring. This outfit is one of my all-time favorites, and I even came up with a hack to shorten my sweater that will be on Instagram soon.”

“I saw this Maison Scotch skirt on Vinted months ago and immediately fell in love with it. But if you know me, you know that I left it for too long and it was sold before I knew it. I searched and searched, and weeks later saw the skirt twice on Vinted. Once with a matching top! It was a bit on the pricey side, but the saleswoman had only worn it once. So I wanted to haggle because that’s just what I do. But she didn’t want to reduce the price. So I left it like that for a while. And then Jane came up with the theme, what do you wear to a winter wedding. And that was exactly the push I needed to complete the purchase. I’m not the type who attends a wedding in a super chic way, I never have those kinds of weddings either. (If I had I would.) But because of the lurex, this set is of course super festive! And those colours!”

Do you have any winter weddings on the horizon? What will you wear? Do you buy something new or wear things you already own?

Oh my goodness, thanks so much, Jodie! I was so wobbly with fatigue and brain fog, I could barely see straight. And my heels kept sinking into the grass making me more wobbly. Hahaha. I am glad it didn’t come through in the photos! This was a fun theme to end the year!

Shelbee, I hope you’re all soon feeling better. It seems like this round of Covid is catching those of us who haven’t gotten it yet. Fingers crossed as we have eluded it, too.

You are simply stunning in this lace dress. It’s the perfect dress for a wedding. Those long sleeves would be nice for a winter wedding, too. Love everything you added as well!

    Feel better soon, my friend!

Marsha, thank you so very much, my friend! Overall, the symptoms have not been terrible other than the fatigue. It is just dragging on and on. I think we are all almost back to good though. Everyone is back to work and school and making it through the days. But it has been super early bedtimes for all! Have you also avoided Covid so far? I hope you continue to so because it isn’t fun…unless you are the type who person enjoys forced bedrest because you can’t lift your limbs! Happy Holidays to you and yours! May you all remain healthy.

Awww, thanks so much! No secret at all…just a splash of makeup and not pajamas! I am improving each day. My taste and smell are coming back slowly which is nice, too. We are almost back to normal! (No, we aren’t. We will never be normal! Haha.) Happy Holidays!

Oh no! So sorry to hear you have all been sick. On the plus side, you look fabulous in this dress and I would never have guessed you were under the weather at all.

    Hi Shelbee,

you are looking great in this outfit, love your style! The heels are really gorgeous, you should wear them more often.

Because of Covid – I had it two years ago and I felt weak and had no feeling for smelling and tasting. It needs time.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Thanks so much, Markus! I really appreciate that. I actually was considering ditching these shoes because they are just way too uncomfortable for my old tired feet! I am finally feeling like myself again after this bout with Covid and for that I am very grateful. Wishing you a happy and blessed holiday season!
