The Magnificent 8 in Viva Magenta
Viva Magenta! The Magnificent 8 has chosen Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year as our style theme for this mid-winter outfit post. The timing couldn’t be better to inject some vibrant color into our wardrobe rotations in an effort to brighten up these dreary gray days at January’s end.
According to Pantone, Viva Magenta “vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative…This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement….Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.” (Source)
Well, based on that description, I can definitely get on board the Viva Magenta train!
While Viva Magenta is a very specific shade of purplish-pinkish-red, the color magenta incorporates a larger spectrum of hues ranging from pinkish-purplish-red to reddish-purplish-pink to pinkish-reddish-purple and even as far as mauvish-crimson. On color wheels, it falls somewhere between red and blue. Well, you get the idea. Magenta is some combination of pink, purple, and/or red making it a gloriously delicious color that is sure to cheer up any winter blues.
The Magnificent 8 is a collaboration among 8 style bloggers, each in a different age bracket, ranging from 20’s to 80’s. The mission of this collaboration is to show you just how ageless style is, how we can each dress however we’d like and in ways that make us feel fabulous. There are no age restrictions on style. So wear what you want, when you want, add a smile, and strut your style with confidence.
Every quarter we choose a theme and we each create an outfit that suits our own personal tastes and fashion choices to illustrate just how ageless style is.
To kick off the new year, we thought it would be fun to show you how women of any age can wear the hottest new color trending in today’s fashion.
As much as I adore all the colors that fall on the magenta spectrum, magenta is not a color that is abundant in my wardrobe. In fact, I have exactly four things that could be classified as magenta: a chunky sweater, block heeled loafers, a pair of velvet ankle boots, and the dress I am wearing here. I also have various accessories that incorporate some shade of pinkish-purplish-reddish-magenta.
This dress is a cotton summer dress with giant puff sleeves that I absolutely hate. I am not even sure why I purchased the dress. I think I had in mind that I might remove the sleeves and then I would like the dress much better. But I haven’t gotten around to that yet. Also, since it is a summer dress, I discounted it as an option for this style challenge and actually created another outfit centered on my chunky magenta sweater.
After taking those photos, however, I decided to at least try to style this summer dress for winter and I ended up loving this outfit so much more than the first one. I will still share that other outfit in a later post, but this outfit really spoke to my bohemian soul. I know I have mentioned previously that I struggle with creating cold weather boho styles so recently I have been putting more effort into it. I want to shrink my wardrobe by at least 50% this year so I am paying really close attention to the ensembles and individual clothing pieces that make my heart and soul happy. That is the requirement for staying in my closet room by the year’s end!
To make this summer dress appropriate for winter, I created a cozy foundation with a black turtleneck, black fleece lined leggings, and knee high lace up boots. Because I hate the puffy sleeves and I still needed another layer for extra warmth, I added this open knit cardigan which fit the boho vibe, covered the silly sleeves, and allowed the vibrant magenta color to still shine bright. I finished the look with piles of accessories that all included some shade of magenta and made me feel at my bohemian best!

What a pretty colour! And my goodness what a snow! Terrible! But it does make the colour stand out even more.

Thanks so much, Nancy! Oh goodness, that isn’t even a lot of snow in these pictures! LOL We have another snowstorm coming in about 1 hour so my kids will likely be home tomorrow morning during our Zoom call!

I absoultely love this color and its so refreshing in the depth of winter. It’s been so gray and dreary around here that color really boosts the mood. I am loving how this boho style came together for you and it look fantastic, especially with the white snow in the background. Although I really like this color, like you I don’t have anything in this color in my wardrobe, lots of pinks but nothing on the magenta side. I’ll have to keep my eyes open.

Thanks so much, Bo! I wore this colorful scarf to the grocery store this morning and not only did it really brighten the gray mood but I also received a compliment from a stranger on it. And compliments always brighten the day! We have more snow on the way beginning in about 1 hour! I will be on the look out for magenta things as well. Although I really am no shopping at all these days. Stay warm and bright, my friend!

I love this look – I had discounted viva magenta for my wardrobe as it makes my redhead colouring look very poorly, but your notes on magenta generally have set me looking for a magenta that suits me.
Btw,you could style your dress for spring and summer by removing the turtleneck but keeping the wrap – no silly sleeves showing!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Tresi! I am finding that there is some shade of magenta for everyone. It looks great on everyone I have seen wearing it so far. So I don’t think you will have too much trouble finding a shade of magenta that looks amazing on you! And I love your styling idea for this dress in the summer! I guess I didn’t think of layering a sweater on top in warmer weather but I always layer kimonos. And this sweater would probably be cool enough anyway with its open weave. Thanks so much for sharing that awesome idea!

Now I love your magenta flounce dress and you nailed Viva Magenta as the Pantone Color of the Year 2023. This color theme for our first Magnificent 8 post of the year, perfection.

I am so glad you gave this dress a second chance because this look is boho fabulousness! The black base layer serves to make the magenta really pop! I love the background so much. We were supposed to get several inches of snow, but we ended up with only a few. I hope to take some photos out in it! I do hope you’ll come visit for a link party on Friday.

Thanks so much, Marsha! I am glad I gave this dress another chance, too! This outfit felt very “me”! It is snowing here again right now. The schools are all delayed and I was hoping they would cancel because I don’t want to go out there to take the kids to school! I am getting antsy for spring and we are only 1/3 of the way through winter. Ugh.

You look fabulous in magenta! I really like how you layered this summer dress for cooler weather too! I love wearing my dresses year round, and such a beautiful one like this, I’m sure you will be wearing it a lot more now 🙂
This was a really fun theme to take part in!

This outfit makes me smile, Shelbee! I love how Bohemian it is, even for the cold winter! I need to get myself some fleece lined leggings. I used to have a pair but I’m not sure what happened to them. Maybe I do have them somewhere. I must have a proper look through my wardrobe!
I’m a huge fan of magenta, it’s definitely one of my colours, and I bet it will look absolutely beautiful with our favourite shades of green!
Now I’m off to figure out the song choice for next month.I keep forgetting all about it!!
Huge hugs

Gah, thanks so much, Suzy! I didn’t think of pairing of magenta with shades of green but that is a freaking brilliant idea, my friend! How pretty that will be. I get my fleece lined leggings from Torrid. They are super soft but also just as thin as non fleeced lined ones. I don’t want the extra bulk from thick fleece! I have to get working on both my SIA post and my Songful Style post for tomorrow!

I do think this outfit is one of those winner, winner chicken dinner outfits Shelbee. I swear it all just came together perfectly.
I love that you have the idea to take off the sleeves (not that I don’t like them, but just the fact that you are willing to customize the dress to what you want it to be). I have a ton of those projects staring at me right now, haha. But it’s better than just throwing them out, right?

Jodie, thanks so much! I need to hone my sewing skills first before I start alterations like removing sleeves! Jeff and I were just talking about learning more sustainable skills like growing a garden and sewing so that is on my list of things to get learning. I also need to invest in a sewing machine! I miss my mom so much when I start talking about sewing and seamstressing. She did all that stuff for me. I just gave her a verbal description of what I wanted and she brought it to life for me. Upcycling is most definitely the fashion of my future!
