Oh my goodness, blazing through spring, indeed! When this group of eight magnificent ladies chose our quarterly style theme, we had enthusiastically settled on the punny title of Blazing Into Spring. But as I sat down to write this post, it occurred to me that we are already very much into spring at this point, with a third of the season already in the past. I think it may have still been winter when we chose our preposition. So I changed my preposition. Because we all have the right to whichever prepositions suit us!

What better thing to wear for a style challenge called Blazing Through Spring than, yep, you guessed it, a blazer! Ha. That was whole idea behind the punny title after all. I have a lot of blazers. This should come as no surprise since I have a lot of everything. I have always liked blazers and all the different styles and silhouettes, colors, fabrics, prints, and patterns that are available. But, like ballet flats, I have never found blazers particularly comfortable. For some reason, however, I still maintain a rather large collection of them despite the fact that they really no longer suit my current bohemian style aesthetic.

So I added a small caveat to this challenge for myself…I wanted to style a blazer for spring but with a boho twist. First I started by ignoring all of the structured blazers hanging on the rack. Then I pulled out the blazers that were less structured or had some gypsy charm. I found three that felt right, this preloved brocade blazer and this lace trimmed corduroy blazer but I ultimately settled on this light tan peplum style blazer because it felt the rightest. It is at least 5 years old and I have struggled with styling it because the color has always washed me out. But I think my coloring is changing some during menopause. Suddenly, I really like these light neutral shades on myself.

I am currently having a slight obsession with slip dresses for this summer so I was over the moon when I found this Maxi Gauze Beach Dress a few weeks ago. The color is called Cloud Dancer. How wonderful for my spacy background, too!

This dress is so unbelievably comfortable, light and airy, perfect for lazy summer days, that I couldn’t resist also getting it in Deep Black and Mermaid Scales-Blue. These dresses will be so great for festival season and front porch sitting and styling with my vast kimono collection. But this Cloud Dancer dress was also wonderful for styling with my boho blazer, my rope sandals, and my favorite hat for an outfit that made me feel blazing fabulous!

Let me introduce the ladies of The Magnificent 8.

Please visit my magnificent friends for more ageless style featuring the timelessly classic blazer.

Originating two centuries ago, the blazer has remained a wardrobe staple in the closets of both men and women for at least 70 years. This outer garment has evolved into many different iterations from the original sporting jackets worn by the Cambridge boating team. There are traditional blazers available in single or double breasted styles, preloved or new. There are cropped blazers and duster length blazers, sleeveless blazers and oversized blazers. Peplum blazers, waterfall blazers, military blazers, and cape blazers. Blazers with one button, two buttons, three buttons, lots of buttons, no buttons, and sometimes buttons that don’t button like the buttons on my blazer.

The neutrals look very good on you actually. I noticed a change in my makeup a few years ago during menopause. Bright lips look awful on me now while I always had red lips for decades. I think that peplum blazer is very Boho. Would look great on shorts!

Thanks so much, Nancy! I had to change my foundation color a few years back to a shade darker than my normal very pale shade. And I used to love dark red lipstick which now looks absolutely horrifying on me! I need medium shades of bronze colors on my lips now. I will have to try this blazer with shorts now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you so much, my friend! I find myself getting further and further away from more structured garments in favor of my loose flowing boho stuff. I am think I am finally settling into my true soul style. But I am not quite ready to stop playing dress up with all the other stuff I have!

I love how you made the blazer into a boho look. Blazers can work into so many styles and you’ve proven it here perfectly.
I find so many great ones at the thrift stores so even though they don’t fit my retired life as much anymore, I still grab them. Because they are great jackets for any day,

Aww, thanks so much, Jodie! The majority of my blazers are thrifted as well. I always snag them up at thrift shops, too, even though I don’t wear them often. This blazer is one of the few that I liked enough to buy retail. You are right, they do make great everyday jackets so I will keep wearing them occasionally. I will be around today to read all of your posts. Yesterday totally got away from me! Our sweet bunny died suddenly on Monday morning and I have just been too sad to do much.

    Shelbee,
Your look is angelic in neutral shades, and nail the boho twist for Blazing Through Spring. I liked the blazer theme; my problem was explaining the difference between a blazer and a jacket. Thanks again for continuing this fun quarterly post; it does help to have fun and connect on our social media platforms

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Eugenia, thanks so much! I haven’t had a chance to read everyone’s posts yet, but I will get to it today. I always put blazers as a subcategory of jackets so I guess that’s how I would explain it. Now I am wondering what exactly makes a blazer a blazer. I look forward to reading your explanation and seeing your blazer style! I really enjoy these collaborations as a way to periodically connect as well. So fun!

It’s a beautiful maxi dress on you and that is a great blazer with it! I never really understood the blazer love either until I got my first jersey blazer – they are sooo comfortable! I can never resist picking them up if I am lucky enough to stumble across one in my size! 🙂

This was a great theme 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Mica! I have a few jersey blazers that are really comfortable. They feel more like wearing a sweater than a blazer. That bit of stretch really is a game changer in the comfort level of a blazer! This was a fun theme. I hope you are enjoying the weekend!
