“The Guitar” by Juan Gris | Style Imitating Art

Next up for Style Imitating Art…

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

It is Salazar’s turn to choose the art. She chose “The Guitar” by Juan Gris, who was a Spanish painter as well as a friend and artistic follower of Pablo Picasso and the Cubism movement. Salazar settled on this Cubist painting because she likes the contrast between the floral pattern and the strong lines as well as the autumnal colors used in the work. You can read more about why she chose this piece here.

The Artwork
The Guitar by Juan Gris
Gouache on Canvas, 1914

During the period of 1913-1916, guitars and violins became the main motifs of Gris’s works. His instruments often have a magisterial quality making them seem like objects of reverence. And in some way, the guitars in his paintings are “a confrontation of symbols that evoke art in general, the art created by Gris and, naturally, by Gris himself.” (Source)

You might already know that I am a fan of Cubism since one of my first artworks chosen for this series was Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”. I like the deconstructive element of changing the shapes of common objects into angular cubey things. I also really enjoy when art inspires art. In this case, music has inspired the painting (and now the painting will inspire our style). And I find all the gorgeous shades of fall to be very inspiring for outfit creation, too. I am also drawn to all the different subtle patterns that appear in the painting which I think will be so great for inspiring some cool print mixing into an outfit as well.

I have some ideas starting to float around in my mind, but I need to go stand in my closet room for a bit and let the magic find me!

If you want to join us for this week’s challenge and be featured with your art inspired outfit in Salazar’s review post on November 2, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Happy styling!
