The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: Shades of Brown

Welcome to The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book!

The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book is a monthly series hosted by Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style and myself. Every month, we invite you to share a photo or two of your Good (or Bad) Buy items that fit the stated theme. We ask that you also provide a short description explaining if the item you are sharing was a Good Buy or one that you will be saying Good-Bye to (formerly known as Bad Buys). Nancy and I will both publish a round up post featuring all of the submissions on the 15th of each month.

Anyone who would like to participate and be featured can send us their photos with a short description via email. You do not have to be a blogger to join. Anyone is welcome! We will give you the theme for the next month at the conclusion of each post. Photos will be due to us by the 10th of the month.

October is all about Shades of Brown! You can see my full round up all the browns in my wardrobe hereIf you sent me a photo, but do not see it in my post, be sure to check Nancy’s post. If you don’t see your photo in either post, please let us know right away and we will add it. Sometimes the submissions can get lost in the shuffle.

“I am sending in an older outfit as I have been sick for the past two weeks and couldn’t take new photos. I have always loved the combination of brown and bue and with the white of this skirt it feels so crisp and fresh! I loved this brown polkadot blouse a lot, it was Primark! And still got those boots, perfect for under dresses. The whole outfit was a Good Buy actually. The skirt was pre loved and I also still have the cardigan. But brown and blue: Perfect combination!”

“The brown one shoulder mesh body is from Zara – which I bought having been inspired by The Elegant Stylist. Here I’m wearing it with cream jeans from Massimo Dutti and a chain belt bought second hand from Thriftify.com. For a more formal look I’m wearing it with peacock blue trousers from Theory with orange mules bought in Bertie in 1990.”

“This brown skirt was a very good buy! I wear it frequently and it goes with everything!”

“In late Fall 2021, I’d gotten the notion to give Dadcore a try. A fashion article at the time had declared that the rolled-neck quarter-zip pullover to be that sweater season’s It knit. I already had such a sweater and hadn’t realized the style’s association with the Dadcore aesthetic which is exactly what it sounds like; a look based on what your dad or granddad might wear. When on my search for brown trousers back in the summer of that year, these plaid ones were another that I found at a local thrift store. I could definitely see my dad as having worn this look especially since the jacket had once been his (now it’s worn by my son). Sadly, I’d found it necessary to redonate these trousers during a closet cleanout last year.”

“Here I am wearing a very old pair of trousers from Next which I’ve had since the early 1990s, with a white jacket (old, River Island) and layered necklace from Asos. The trousers were a very good buy! I call them my Rupert Bear trousers.”

“I do all my shopping gently used, sustainable thrifting. I purchased this sweater from a thrift store in Yucca Valley, near L.A. three years ago and it’s still one of my favorites. (Even though at this point I’ve ripped it hiking multiple times and had to re-sew pieces.) It’s so warm for hikes even on the coldest days.”

“This ombre and leopard print cardigan in shades of brown and earth tones is perfect for fall, and even though the colors don’t mix well with many of the colors I wear, I consider it a good buy because it is cozy and warm and the black in the print makes it much more mixable and wearable for me.”

“For the transition season when the weather says summer but the mind says fall, I rely on this brown crop pants + leather flats combination. It looks good with other autumnal colors like rust and ivory as well as cooler colors like navy and aqua.”

“I got this brown sweater through a Stitch Fix box and I just love the two tone brown shade. Paired with an old necklace/ bracelet set that I bought nearly 15 years ago all these shades of browns I’m wearing have been good buys.”

“I couldn’t find much in brown but I also didn’t want to miss out. I am not sure if these footed leggings are brown or maybe they are burgundy, not sure?”

Up Next for November: Hoodies!

You are invited to join us in November to share your favorite (or least favorite) Hoodies. Remember you can interpret these themes in whatever way suits your wardrobe. Hoodies do not necessarily mean just sweatshirts. Anything with a hood will do. I have hooded tee shirts, hooded sweaters, hooded jackets and coats, and even a dress or two with a hood. So find some of your favorite (or least favorite) Hooded Things and send them our way!

You are welcome to send two photos if you’d like to be featured on both blogs. Remember to include a brief description about your submissions. Please submit your photos and descriptions by the 10th of November to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com or to info@nancysfashionstyle.com so we can put you in the spotlight.

Oh no, Jodie! I even went searching through my emails, too, looking for one from you because you always join us! But I couldn’t find one. If you want to resend me the email, I am happy to add your photo into the post. I am so sorry that you were missed! I hope you had a lovely vacation!

Fashion is fickle, that’s for sure! While I generally rely more on black as my anchor color, I do like brown because you get so many options of different shades. Black is just black. There is no light black or dark black or in-between shades of black. There is just black. Brown gives you the lightest beiges to the darkest mocha colors with so many different shades between to work with any wardrobe, any color palette, any aesthetic.

Great roundup of contributors for Good Buy/Good Bye. I think that brown is one of those love or hate colors that the haters simply don’t know how to wear. Thanks for hosting this challenge month after month. Digging around for my favorite hoodie looks is now on my to-do list.

Rena, thanks so much for joining us! Brown is definitely one of those discounted colors that really carries a punch when you know how to wear it. I honestly don’t think there are any color that I dislike. I wear it all depending on my mood! I am looking forward to seeing the creative hoodie things we will see for next month.

Oh I just love a good hoodie! My middle son wears them nearly every day year round too and has been practically living in his Harry Potter one we got at universal last year. This should be a fun theme.

Hi, Shelbee – I love those Western boots and would love to find things like that at a thrift store. You’ve inspired me to go out and search for such bargains. I haven’t found a really good thrift store in my area. I may have to go for a long drive. Although I certainly don’t need more boots. Lol! – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

Thanks so much, Angie! I have found some really amazing footwear over the years in my local thrift shops. Most of the shoes are junk in thrift shops but every once in a while there is a gem amid the junk! I never need more boots but I cannot resist a good thrift store find!
