Out of My Comfort Zone: Camo and Floral
Oftentimes, we get stuck in our comfort zones. It’s a natural occurrence and it’s completely understandable to want to stay within the confines of what makes you comfortable. Because, well, it’s comfortable. And who wants to feel uncomfortable? But I have learned that nothing great comes out of comfort…except, of course, comfort. But if we manage to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones that is where great things can happen. And this carries through just about every aspect of life that I can think of from the everyday mundane things like our clothing to the bigger and scarier things like huge life goals. When I was a competitive swimmer…

How to Wear Over the Knee Socks Over 40 and Link Up On the Edge #14
I don’t really think this classifies as a legitimate “how to” post because it is really simple. You pull on some cute over the knee socks with an above the knee skirt or dress (or shorts) no matter what your age and the rock the hell out it! I am going to totally throw my sister under the bus here (sorry, sis)…back in my mid-thirties, my sister would make fun of me for wearing knee high and over the knee socks. She told me it was ridiculous that a woman of my age would dress that way. At first, I tried to disregard her words. But then after I had…

Herringbone and Plaid
I have had this old herringbone swing jacket in my closet for at least a decade and it always makes its rounds into my outfits. It is the perfect weight for temperatures in the 40-60’s and it is classic enough to have decades of staying power to mix with newer trends every year. So you all know by now that plaid blanket scarves are a super hot trend this year. I recently picked up this one from Target to add to my growing collection. As I have been accumulating blanket scarves, I found myself steering away from the traditional tartan plaids, but then I realized that I really wanted one!…

Kitten Shoes…Meow
Some days I just want to wear my kitten shoes. And some days my kitten shoes are the most practical choice. It just depends. On this day, the cats were the only shoes that really looked right with my new clearance ($6 at Kohl’s) burgundy boot cut corduroy pants. These pants are so super soft with a fine corduroy ribbing and the color is right on trend this season. I paired my wine colored pants with a simple black cotton tunic, a pale heather gray infinity scarf, some argyle socks, and a handy dark wash denim jacket. Very simple, very basic, but with kitten shoes! You cannot argue the creativity…

Denim, Denim, Plaid, and Cowgirl Boots
I just realized how much I am enjoying my denim jackets this season (I have three). I have been wearing them most days lately since the temperatures have been in the 50’s and denim is exactly the right amount of warmth for me. I also am enjoying experimenting with the double denim trend. Last time I wore double denim, I paired two shades of blue denim together. This time, I went with black denim pants and a light blue denim jacket. And I really liked the contrast created with the super dark and the very pale. I layered a blue, black, and white flannel shirt over a black tank and…

My Plaid Poncho
The September issue (which came out in August) of Redbook Magazine featured this red plaid poncho in their piece “Fab Fall Style Under $100.” It is from Old Navy, one of my favorite places to shop. And for only $39.94 for wool-blend outerwear, I thought this was a great deal! But I couldn’t find it in Old Navy for a really long time. I would check the store, then the website. Nothing. Finally sometime in October, there was the poncho available online. But I really wanted to check out the quality in person before making my purchase. I kept checking in the store and it was not there and the…

Olive Green Cardigan and Garlic Olive Hummus
This outfit is a combination of three current trends that I am really digging right now: dark floral patterns, stripes, and the oh-so-popular Chelsea boots. Add in one of my favorite colors, olive green, and I feel super! I put this outfit together to attend an FRG (Family Readiness Group) meeting last week. These meetings are held periodically to keep family members updated on the schedules and happenings within our soldiers’ military units. I don’t usually attend, but with my husband currently deployed, I obviously like to keep myself abreast of what’s going on. I also look at it as an opportunity to style a new outfit! These meetings are…

Military Inspired with Real Combat Boots
I have always had an obsession with military inspired clothing since long before I ever met and fell in love with a military man. I have sort of become tired of all things camouflage, but I still adore my black Army tanker boots that were a gift from my husband years ago. And I still have a weakness for Army green. And I definitely have a huge crush on stripes right now. So why not pair a black and white stripe sweater with an Army green field jacket and combat boots? Throw on a scarf to keep it feminine and I have created one of my favorite looks so far…

Monochromatic Marsala and a “Stolen” Sweater
Maybe I’m strange, but most articles of clothing in my wardrobe have a story behind how I acquired them. I usually know where I purchased each item and how much I paid for them. And if I got the item for a “steal” (pun absolutely intended), you better believe that I’m going to tell you about it! I get very exited if I receive a compliment on a piece of clothing that I only paid a few dollars for. And I feel compelled to let the unsuspecting compliment-giver know exactly how much it cost! The story behind this monochromatic outfit is kind of funny. I was shopping with my friend…

Double Denim and Pearls
I have been wanting to try the double denim trend, but I wasn’t sure if I would be comfortable with it. The only way to find out if I could pull it off was to just pull it off and wear it with confidence. By the end of the day, I did feel pretty awesome in my double denim. I paired dark wash skinny jeans with a lighter wash denim top. I am thinking that this is the best way to style double denim. I think darker on top and lighter on bottom would look weird. For me, at least. But please feel free to prove me wrong! I added…
