Songful Style Link Party #40: “Six” by Rose Betts

About Songful Style
Songful Style is a style challenge series hosted by Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Suzy of Suzy Turner, The Grey Brunette.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post. You are welcome to style your own song inspired outfit and add it to the link party or link anything that you want to share even if it has nothing to do with the song.
It was Suzy’s turn to choose our inspiration song and she picked one of her favorites on her current playlist…“Six” by Rose Betts.
The Video
The Lyrics
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
And when the people found them they asked for more
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
But when the night came in there was only four
There was only four
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for healing
But then you left us there
What you do that for
What you do that for
Six dead pieces lying stone cold
With the smell of death upon them
Oh is there time still left to release the hold
To release the hold
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears
And you can count every time that the hammer falls
You can hold up your pain like a lightning bolt
But the feeling it's bleeding into everything
You can kill every flower that your daydreams touch
And you can cry for the world that you hate so much
But I left the door open why didn't you turn
We're just six dead pieces six dead pieces
Better just to let us burn
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I'm getting tired of
Facing your fears
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
But when the night came in there was only four
There was only four

About the Artist and the Song
Rose Betts is an English singer-songwriter who gained attention with her 2022 viral TikTok hit “Driving Myself Home” and her 2023 hit “Irish Eyes.” Previous to her TikTok fame, Betts produced and performed a cover of “Song of the Siren” by Tim Buckley on the 2021 soundtrack to Zach Snyder’s Justice League. She also collaborated with Bazzi on his 2020 single “Young & Alive” which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Remixed Recording category.
Rose Betts was born on October 17, 1991, in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire, where she grew up with her twin sister and two younger siblings. When she finished school, Betts moved to London so she could start her career as a musician. After performing with bands with a few years, she began making her own music in 2016, releasing her debut single “Orange Trees” that same year, followed by an EP, The Stars Look Down, in 2017.
In 2022, Betts released her debut album, White Orchids, which featured her viral TikTok hit “Driving Myself Home.” In March 2025, she released her sophomore album, There Is No Ship, with “Six” as the opening song. “Six” was written and produced by Betts with lyrics that are hauntingly beautiful and purposely left open to interpretation for the listener.
Betts has very eloquently explained the meaning behind the song, “I’ve never wanted to pin this song down to one thing or story. It is a song about my family and I think, in the way that all families are so complex, the song doesn’t bear being cornered into a neat package. I wanted the video to add some emotional weight to how much the song means to me but never to explain it. I hope it opens the song up to even more interpretation and gives the listener even more space to find themselves inside it.” (Source)
She continues to create music with her signature Celtic sound and I am here for it! This was my first introduction to Rose Betts and her musical talents and I immediately became a fan. That’s just one reason that I love our monthly Songful Style challenges so much. Discovering new music is such wonderful nourishment for the soul!

About My Outfit
My outfit was inspired by Rose Betts’s outfit in the video for “Six.” She is wearing a bright pink dress featuring a sheer top layered beneath a long funky black jacket and clunky black boots.

Since all-black outfits tend to photograph terribly, I decided to reverse her look by wearing a long black dress with a bright pink sheer kimono robe on top. The lacy neckline of this black maxi dress creates a similar sheer effect to the see-through top of Rose’s dress. I have had this black maxi dress for many years but I don’t think I have ever shared it on the blog which is surprising because it’s one of my favorite long black dresses. I love that it is very full and swishy and lightweight and ever so perfect for humid summer days. The bright pink robe is a new acquisition that I purchased this summer. I certainly did not need another robe but I simply could not resist the color.
I was going to wear big black combat boots similar to Rose’s but it was just too darn hot for all that. But I still wanted a clunky black shoe so I went with my old black patent Mary Janes with some fishnet ankle socks. Because Rose has all those cute little ribbons tied in her hair and I didn’t have time to attempt that, I wore my everyday side braid but added a big pink flower tie (which came with my polka dot Tieks) and my black straw boater hat. I was also really drawn to the dining room wallpaper in the video. It looks like an apple blossom print so I tied my pink apple blossom scarf around my hat for a very dramatic hat band. Because the neckline of this dress has the lacy details, the only jewelry I wore was a pair of bright pink, black, and silver spiral earrings.

Not only did I love the new song introduction for this month’s challenge, but this outfit is now one of my favorites! The dress was already a favorite but this pink robe is really making me feel joyful and bright.
I hope you will check out how my songful friends have styled their outfits inspired by this haunting tune.

I LOVE this look, Shelbee! Black with pink has always been one of my favourite colour combinations and the way you’ve styled it is perfection. To me, it’s the kind of thing I could see Stevie Nicks wearing and she’s such a style inspiration for me! I even love the little socks with the shoes, and I don’t ordinarily like that, but it just looks fab! All the little details are so beautifully done—like taking a bit of inspo from that beautiful wallpaper! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

Aww, thanks so much, my friend! I normally wouldn’t wear the little fishnet socks with these shoes either but it really seemed perfect to reflect Rose’s style. I would probably wear my black sparkly rope sandals or cowgirl boots with this in real life. I have always loved pink and black together as well. Any shade of pink, too. It is such a striking combination of innocent and feminine with badassery! And I am super flattered to be compared to Stevie Nicks! She is one of my personal fashion icons, for sure!

I love Mary Jane shoes, and I’ve got some myself. I really like the black socks you’re wearing in them.

Thanks so much, Nicole! Mary Janes are super cute. I have always had a pair or two in my closet for as long as I can remember!

OOh, I thought about doing this, but I didn’t have that, either. Luckily, I saw her alternate video, and I was able to use that.
I love this so much, Shelbee!! Those shoes and anklets are so cute, and your hat always looks so cool! I loved discovering a new artist! I’m now following her on Instagram.

Thanks so much, Marsha! I love that you used her alternate video as your inspiration! I was dying to wear this bright pink robe for something and this song was perfect for it! I am a big fan of the artist you chose for our next song as well. I had never heard of them before either.
