About Songful Style

Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Michelle of Funky Fashion Style.

Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.

It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!

We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

This month’s song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, was chosen by Marsha. You can find more information about the song in my post here including the lyrics, the official music video and some covers, the history of the song, biographical information about the artist, and a selection of images to inspire your style.

Remember to check out how my songfully sassy friends are having fun with their Cyndi-inspired styles!

This iconic 80s anthem of female empowerment was begging for an 80s style outfit that would make Cyndi Lauper just as proud in 2023 as it would have in 1983. I gave it my best effort and I have to tell you that this girl was definitely having fun with this game of dress up!

Since I no longer own any clothing from the 80s, except for my Keith Haring-inspired tee shirt, I had to use my 2000s wardrobe to create this look. And since fashion is fickle and cycles quickly, it didn’t seem all that difficult to do.

My outfit was inspired by both of Cyndi’s dresses in the official music video. I don’t have any dresses that resemble hers, so I looked for a midi length full skirted dress with a vintage vibe that I could layer tulle beneath. My eyes landed on this fun circus print dress that I acquired from a collaboration with Rosegal back in 2017. It has the silhouette I wanted for this challenge as well as the vintage appeal. And the circus print, which features female acrobats and female ring leaders, seemed appropriate to represent a song about strong females wanting to have fun.

I layered not one, but two, tulle skirts beneath my dress for extra fullness and more swishiness when spinning. Having two tulle skirts around my waist underneath the dress did create a lot of bulk in that area so I ended up putting a shapewear slip under the dress but over the tops of the skirts to smooth it all down. Since my slip is about two sizes too big, it did exactly what I needed it to without squeezing me too tightly. Because a girl who wants to have fun has no desire to be squeezed too tightly by ridiculous shapewear. Shapewear=Not Fun.

Following Cyndi’s lead, I went absolutely wild with my accessories, approaching it with a more is better attitude. I added layered necklaces that fall into the gaudy category, some 80s inspired things around my waist like a rainbow grommet belt and a pearl studded belt bag, fingerless gloves topped with bracelet stacks, fishnet on my legs, and ballet flats for dancing! And because I love hats as much as Ms. Lauper does, you know I was going to have something to top my noggin. Cyndi wears a black fedora in the video so I immediately chose my white fedora with a black band. But then I also spotted this red newsboy cap in my closet and then I couldn’t decide which I liked better. My husband and kids all voted for the white fedora, but I will let you decide for yourselves!

And what serendipity again that I had some rooms emptied out for carpet installation so I could take advantage for an indoor photoshoot. Since the end of the video shows Cyndi and her friends all dancing in her bedroom, I couldn’t have found a better location for photos for this challenge than an empty bedroom. One with an awesome Photowall, too! And a black cat photo bomber. That’s Dave, by the way. Full name, David Gandolf C. Cat. And he just wants to have fun, too. NYA!

The older I get, the more fun I am having playing dress up. We are never too old to have some fun with our fashion! How did I do? And where in the world would I ever wear this outfit?

If you would like to join us for next month’s Songful Style challenge, we will be hosting a link party on May 29, 2023, featuring our outfits inspired by Michelle’s song choice, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor. There is so much fabulous sartorial inspiration in the video. I am super excited to get started on this one! I will share more details about the song choice in a later post as usual. Until then, happy styling!
