Songful Style | “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #651

Are you ready for the next song choice to musically inspire your style? I am! So here we go…

About Songful Style

Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Michelle of Funky Fashion Style

Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.

It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!

We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

Michelle chose the song for May, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor. It is definitely ear-worm material, but it also gives you a little extra bounce. Probably because of the worm wiggling around in your ear after hearing it! Check out some inspiration below for creating an outfit for this song.

Postmodern Jukebox European Tour Version (So, so, so good! Pay attention to the guys’ faces in the background. I am cracking up!)
Meghan Trainor “Beauty Version” (Acoustic Cover) by Tiffany Alvord Ft. Tevin (This is such an adorable video. I was smiling and giggling and dancing all the way through!)
Home Free (I was hoping to find a male interpretation of this song and this one is so freaking good! Again, I was smiling and giggling and singing and dancing along!)
Tanner Patrick (Another male version. This kid is adorable.)
Jimmy Fallon, Meghan Trainor & The Roots Sing “All About That Bass” (w/ Classroom Instruments) (I can’t not smile when Jimmy Fallon does these covers with classroom instruments! The plastic xylophone, the banana shaker, and the kazoos are killing me!)
The Lyrics
“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor
Because you know I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass... bass... bass... bass

Yeah, it's pretty clear, I ain't no size two
But I can shake it, shake it, like I'm supposed to do
'Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
And all the right junk in all the right places

I see the magazine workin' that Photoshop
We know that shit ain't real, come on now, make it stop
If you got beauty, beauty, just raise 'em up
'Cause every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah, my mama she told me "don't worry about your size"
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
She says, "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night"
(That booty, uh, that booty booty)
You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
So if that's what you're into, then go 'head and move along

Because you know I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass... Hey!

I'm bringing booty back
Go 'head and tell them skinny bitches that
No, I'm just playing, I know you think you're fat
But I'm here to tell you...
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah my mama she told me, "don't worry about your size"
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
She says, "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night"
(That booty booty, uh, that booty booty)
You know I won't be no stick figure, silicone Barbie doll
So if that's what you're into, then go 'head and move along

Because you know I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass...

Because you know I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I said I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass...

Because you know I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass, no treble
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass... Hey!
I'm all about that bass
'Bout that bass... Hey!
I'm all about that bass
Bout that bass...
Hey!
Yeah yeah... ohh... You know you like this bass... Hey...
About the Artist and the Song

Meghan Trainor is an American singer-songwriter who was born on December 22, 1993, in Nantucket, Massachusetts, to Kelli and Gary Trainor who are jewelers by trade. Her father was also a music teacher and organist at a Methodist church where Meghan began singing at the age of 6. From this early interest in music forward, her parents supported and encouraged Meghan’s pursuit of a musical career.

According to her mother, Meghan played most of her music by ear without any formal training. At the encouragement of her father, she explored a wide variety of musical genres beginning with her family’s soca band, Island Fusion, when she was 12 years old. In addition to playing soca covers, Island Fusion also played Meghan’s earliest original compositions. She wrote her first original song, “Give Me a Chance”, when she was just 13 years old. She was in the band for 4 years as a vocalist and also played piano, guitar, and bongo drums.

Trainor released 3 independent albums between the ages of 15 and 17 which all consisted of material she had written, recorded, performed, and produced. Leading up to her breakthrough album, Title, in 2014, she had already established herself as a talented and successful songwriter, producer, and backup vocalist in Los Angeles and Nashville.

In November 2013, she co-wrote her debut single, “All About That Bass”, with Kevin Kadish, which was released on June 30, 2014, to mixed reviews with some critics calling it a novelty song which failed to empower all body types while its fans delighted in the upbeat sound and body positive message. However, despite what the critics may say, the song became a huge success. But not immediately. It debuted at number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on July 26, 2014, and reached number 1 on September 20, 2014. Trainor became the 21st female artist in chart history to accomplish this feat with a debut single. Then it spent 8 consecutive weeks in the number 1 spot, the longest run for a female artist that year and the longest run for any Epic Records artist in chart history. It was the best selling song by a female artist in the 2010s and received various awards and nominations including two 2015 Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

While I don’t really love the line in the song where she calls out size 2 girls as if they are less than other girls, I do appreciate the overall message that we are all perfect from the bottom to the top. And like I said already, the song is darn catchy! My outfit is already photographed and I am excited to share it with you.
