SIA Gallery of Style | Tree of Life by Keith Haring
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of MeadowTree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Inspiration Artwork
You can read why I chose this specific piece as my inspiration artwork here.
Tree of Life by Keith Haring (Acrylic on canvas tarpaulin with metal grommets, 1985)
The Gallery of Style (in random order)
Thanks so much to everyone who joined us for this round of Style Imitating Art.
Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks
Daenel is wearing the coolest dress by Kantha Bae over a pair of flare leg jeans with sandals. She says that the flowers and the colors of her dress are giving her every bit of life. What a perfect representation of a painting that celebrates life! I want this whole outfit to find its way into my closet!
Reni of Reni’s Odds and Sods
Reni went with a recent outfit that features bright colors and Hawaiian vibes with a bold floral that works great for representing the tree of life. It is such a cheerful look. I need a Hawaiian shirt in my life!
Michelle of My Bijou Life
Michelle decided on a super cheerful and bright colorblocked outfit in pink, yellow, and green. I can’t help but smile when I look at her. This is such a super fun look!
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally struggled with creating a new outfit for this challenge, but she found a recent outfit of the day that works perfectly. She chose this outfit because the boldly printed scarf reflects the bright joyful colors in the painting. It is a gorgeous scarf and it really stands out over a simple black and white outfit.
The Co-Hosts
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Salazar’s look came from some brainstorming that led her to her William Morris waistcoat which she layered over a very pretty shirtdress. The colors and the leafy print on her waistcoat mimic the colors and the tree motif of the painting. Although the colors are more muted than in the painting, it is a beautiful and cheerful outfit that very adequately represents a celebration of life!
Terri of MeadowTree Style
Terri honed in on the tree, focusing her outfit on green and black. The fabric of her blouse has always reminded her of tree bark texture so it is the perfect piece to choose for this challenge. She shared two different looks. The one with the jacket is her favorite, but I am loving the look with her green Melissa shoes. Bu you all know that green is my favorite color ever. What a beautiful shade of green and two very lovely outfits.
And Me!
I focused more on the dancing figures at the bottom of the painting with my bright green stick figure tee shirt circa 1989. I went with a full on 80s look to represent the era and the joyful colors in this celebration of life!
Thanks again to everyone who joined this week’s SIA challenge. You all did such a beautiful job representing the painting as well as celebrating life!
*If you have submitted a photo and it was not included, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle.
Also be sure to stop back on Monday, August 12, 2022, for the next art inspiration. It is Salazar’s turn to choose.
Keeping it on the edge,

Sally in St Paul
I absolutely love the variety of styles in this challenge’s outfits! 70s boho, laid back tropical, cheerful colorblocking, classic with a colorful summery vibe, muted fall Arts & Crafts academia, sophisticated chic, and 80s happy with an edge. Every one is terrific and true to the individual.

This turned out to be a fun challenge. I love the variety that we have. I agree with what Sally said about everyone staying true to their own style but still finding a way to intrepretate the work. Great job everyone!

Thanks so much, Terri! I love this series so much because it does inspire so much sartorial creativity while allowing everyone to shop their closets, view their wardrobes with a different perspective, and still remain true to their personal styles. Great job all around, indeed!

This was a SUPERB collection of outfits!!! Everyone nailed the brief beautifully. The colours are wonderful and everyone really coordinated as a collective!
I had a lovely dress to wear which was the colours (and was made from old sari fabric) but I just didn’t get around to sending a pic.

Marsha Banks
I swear Daenel could wear a brown paper bag and still look stunning, right? I love the way she pulls together different Kantha pieces and makes them her own. And, Michelle’s look…it’s just so joyous and definitely tree of life material!! This was a wonderful prompt and an even better collage, Shelbee!

I agree with you completely about both Daenel and Michelle! They both inspire me with their style and creativity! I really need some Kantha Bae pieces in my wardrobe but I am a terrbile online shopper. I prefer to feel the clothes and try them on before purchasing. I wish there were a Kantha Bae store nearby!
