SIA Gallery of Style | “Earth and Sky” by Paul Meltsner

It is gallery time…my favorite of all the SIA posts published here where you can see all the sartorial interpretations in one place!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. That being said, we would love to see more participants join us for our fun style challenges. Anyone is welcome to play along. Just watch for our Monday posts when we share the artwork, style an outfit inspired by it, and email it to one of the co-hosts to be featured in our gallery posts. We encourage you to invite your friends, too!

You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.

Suzy of Suzy Turner, The Grey Brunette

It has been a few years since Suzy has joined our Style Imitating Art challenges but she is back now and looking fabulous as ever in a funky pair of preloved trousers for a cute casual look that really hits the mark!

Sally of Within a World of My Own

Sally created a summery outfit using sandstone coral and medium denim to represent the earth and the sky as well as the farmer’s blue shirt. She added some of the darker, richer colors that appear in the painting with her accessories. It is a wonderful outfit for this transitional season while the weather is still warm but fall is definitely in the air.

Marsha of Marsha in the Middle

Despite her struggle in creating an outfit for this challenge, Marsha came through with flying colors…literally…look at the amazing colors in her fabulous dress. She leaned into the red and rust colors in the painting and added a teal slip with blue topaz jewelry to represent the farmer’s shirt as well as the sky. She wore black sandals to reflect the bold graphic nature of the painting. I want this dress and slip in every color available!

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey

Salazar chose a light blue dress to represent the sky and her corduroy waistcoat to represent the earth. The waistcoat fabric imitates the textures of the rows of wheat as well as the farmer’s straw hat. She wore maroon shoes for the darker brown of the equipment, barn, and tree in the background of the painting. Of course, Salazar also had the perfect brooch…a wheat sheaf…for an extra touch of wonderful. Her interpretation is so good for this one that I actually laughed right out loud when I first saw it!

And Me!

I started with a dress that features a print of teal and orange fronds sweeping across a dark blue background. The colors in the dress seemed to be an accurate representation of the general color palette of the painting plus the frond print sort of resembles the wheat field portrayed in the art. Then I layered on an old kimono robe in rusty brown with a floral print that also features the same colors appearing in my dress and the painting. To represent the farmers themselves, I wore my brown cowgirl boots and a distressed cowgirl hat in navy blue.

I hope you all have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art as much as I have. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, September 15, 2025, for Salazar’s choice of our next art inspiration.

What a delight that Suzy is back with SIA – her interpretation is amazing, I love it. It’s giving me the image of an artisan gardener/farmer who is manning a stall at a farmer’s market with practical silhouettes and layers to keep the heat/sun at bay and gorgeous scarf and handbag for extra flair.

Nice to see the boho Shelbee, academia Salazar, and arty Marsha interpretations of this painting, all of which look terrific for this artwork.
