Peregrine Falcon or Bald Eagle? & Spread The Kindness Link Up On the Edge #796

Ever since gifting myself this amazing bird cardigan for Christmas, I have been wanting to share it with you but the weather has been so very uncooperative these last few months. Between mountains of snow and record breaking cold temperatures, I have been only photographing my outfits for preplanned style challenges. While I do wear those style challenge outfits in real life, my typical everyday winter look is something more like this…leggings, a tee shirt, a lightweight cardigan, a heavy cardigan, a scarf, a hat, and boots.
As I mentioned in my Christmas gift post, I have been wearing this gorgeous sweater with weekly regularity but there was some discrepancy in the name of the cardigan. Boot Barn calls it the Peregrine Eagle Cardigan Sweater, however, no such animal exists. There are peregrine falcons and there are eagles, two different avian species and only one has peregrine in the name.
By the way, the word peregrine means wandering, traveling, or migrating, just like the highly migratory peregrine falcons which often travel up to 15,000 miles (25,000 km) annually. Eagles, on the other hand, are considered partial migratory birds with some species remaining in the same territories all year round. I guess that’s why eagles don’t get that peregrine descriptor.

This accidental misnomer in my sweater description made me curious which bird species is actually depicted on the back of my cardigan. When I compared the image on my sweater to real life images of eagles and falcons, I was not able to completely discern which bird is on my sweater. I think it looks exactly like the peregrine falcon in the image below except the head and beak shape are much more like the eagle. Maybe it’s a peregrine falcon’s body with an eagle’s head and that’s why they named it the “Peregrine Eagle Cardigan”. So maybe it’s not an accidental misnomer after all but rather a completely made up mythological bird hybrid! What do you think?

Since I wasn’t sure, I decided to ask AI for some help. I did an image search using the above photo and it immediately and correctly identified my sweater as the Idyllwind Women’s Peregrine Eagle Cardigan.
So I asked it, “What bird is pictured?”
The answer: “The bird pictured on the cardigan is a peregrine falcon. While the product name is the ‘Peregrine Eagle Cardigan Sweater’, the specific markings on the bird’s face, such as ‘tear marks’ below the eyes, are characteristic features of a falcon, not an eagle.”
Next, I rephrased my question to AI and asked, “Is it a falcon or an eagle?”
The answer: “The bird depicted on the sweater is an eagle. The sweater is officially known as the ‘Idyllwind Women’s Peregrine Eagle Sweater’, which explicitly identifies the bird in the design as an eagle.”
Um, thanks, AI. That really wasn’t much help at all.

No thanks to AI, I am still not sure if I should refer to this sweater as “my falcon sweater” or “my eagle sweater”. I guess I could just call it “my peregrine eagle sweater” like Boot Barn does. And if anyone ever questions me, I will have to inform them of the newly discovered mythological bird hybrid known as the falcon-eagle. A-ha! That’s it. I shall call it my feagle sweater!
For this particular styling of my feagle cardigan, I wore the exact same outfit underneath as I did in last Friday’s Adventures in Thrifting post featuring my new-to-me green gingham shirt dress. I took these photos on the same day and simply changed my topper and my accessories for an entirely different outfit.

For this restyle of my green eel skin cowgirl boots with monochromatic olive green leggings, short sleeve tunic, and lightweight cardigan, I, of course, added my new feagle cardigan with my favorite long floral scarf.
For jewelry, I wore my ivory horn necklace, a preloved fabric ring necklace, my wooden owl necklace, and ivory leaf earrings. I made it even more winter appropriate with my olive green floppy felt hat and my tan fingerless mitts.
I was so comfy and cozy in this outfit that I wore it for three days straight before washing it. I absolutely adore this sweater. It is very heavy so I don’t need a coat with it and the quality is impeccable. It is proving to be an extremely versatile item in my wardrobe as the gorgeous colors coordinate with so many of my basic layering pieces.
My only complaint is actually my own fault. The sweater is oversized and very roomy. I generally order my sweaters one size bigger to allow room for extra layers. Turns out I didn’t need the extra room in this one. I ordered the XXL but the XL would have been perfect. But that’s okay because I still love it so much and I prefer my clothes loose and oversized anyway.
I am sure I will continue wearing this cardigan on repeat until it gets too warm for it so don’t be surprised if you see it restyled here more than once!

Whatever the eagle is, it’s beautiful. And I love birds of prey. Fantastic boots and the colour of your leggings I like a lot. Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks so much, my friend! I also like birds of prey. They are so majestic. But I only really like images of birds. Birds in real life freak me out!

Whatever it’s called, it’s fabulous! Looks so cosy and warm, matches so many things and oversized just turns it into a coatigan. Snow still looks amazing although probably what you don’t want to hear!!!

As someone who see eagles everyday, it’s definitely an eagle. Sometimes AI is of no help at all Ha ha. Thanks so much for featuring my post! I so appreciate it! Thanks for the party too.

Very cool! I think animals in designs – no matter what the actual item is, from clothing and jewelry – are often based on a vague idea of the animal the designer has or it just can’t be done precisely (guilt of that myself), so calling it a “feagle” sounds like the perfect idea to me!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my goodness, thanks so much, Cat! I totally get that it is probably very difficult to accurately depict animals in certain types of art. Whoever designed this cardigan wanted a feagle and I am here for it! LOL

FEAGLES FOREVER! 😀
We recently had the broken dishwasher in our apartment switched out for one that the maintenance guy Frankensteined together from four separate dishwashers. Perhaps the designer of this sweater did the same 😉

OMG, Sally, you just cracked me up! It’s a Frankenstein Feagle! LOL

Your sweater is gorgeous, I love this look! It seems to me like the designer took some artistic liberties to create this beautiful mythical looking bird, whatever it’s name. Your boots and monocrome layers underneath are perfect with it. Hope you enjoy your weekend, and thanks for hosting the linkup!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, Di, thanks so much! I think you are probably correct about artistic liberties. Taking such liberties is just fine because I am now a big fan of the feagle! LOL

I’m confused a bit too. It looks like a cross between both birds. It’s a super cute cardigan though and I love the snowy pics (although I’m sure you are sick of it!).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Laura! I think it is a definitely a hybird (that’s my new word for a hybrid bird…hybird!) Ha. I am definitely sick of the snow. Now we have rain in the forecast for the next 10 days. Snow season leads to black snow season which leads to rain season and then my least favorite of all, mud season! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Your True Self
Hi, Shelbee – Love your feagle cardigan and boots; Now I want to go shopping at Boot Barn. Lol! That was very sharp of you to detect the discrepency in the name of the bird on your sweater. Your everyday outfit is one I’ve been wearing, except that the heavy sweater is enough over a tee. I don’t need double cardigans around the house, but maybe it would be good for going places. I always have a pashmina handy for variable temperatures inside and extra warmth outside. Great look! – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, Angie, thanks so much, my friend! The name immediately struck me as odd because I had never heard of a peregrine eagle only peregrine falcons. But now we know that peregrine feagles must exist, too, at least on a mythical level! LOL Have a lovely weekend!

I’m definitely Team Feagle, except the poor falcon only gets on letter and most of the bird seems to be a falcon. Maybe Team Falgle? Hahaha!! Those boots, Shelbee, those boots! They are magnificent! I love this outfit so much. I can see why you wear this cardigan all the time. It’s joyous, light colored for these darker days, and just so nature-inspired! Thanks for the link up (I’ll link later when I’m on my iPad as my dumb laptop won’t even let me see the link button!)!

Hahahahaha, Falgle! Maybe it’s a feagle falgle! OMG, I’m laughing so hard. I love making up new hybrid words! Thanks so much, Marsha! I really appreciate this comment on so many levels.
