New Home Decor and Upcycle Projects & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #664

I have more updates to share in my bohemian bedroom wall decor as well as a few clothing upcycle projects that I have been working on this summer. I am very pleased with my progress even though I work at a slug’s pace sometimes. But hey, slow progress is still progress!

In my bedroom, I completed two more walls with some DIY love. The first is another hat wall to which I added a rope picture hanging thing. I had planned to print some family photos to hang here but then I remembered a book of silly vintage postcards that I have had for years. I have used a lot of the postcards already but I had just enough left to make an awesome wall hanging!

Then I was inspired by my rag curtains and a giant trash bag filled with my kids’ old clothing to go the donation drop. I decided not to donate the clothing but to use it to make some sentimental home decor. I took all of the tie dye shirts that were in the bag and I cut off the the cool graphics and set them aside for another project. Then I cut all the tee shirts into strips and tied them to sticks that my boys found and carved all the bark off for me. And now I have these adorable and sentimental wall hangings for my bedroom.

I had some extra tie dye strips to make a third wall hanging but I had run out of carved sticks so I taped two marshmallow roasting skewers together and made a third one for the front door. I absolutely love it!

The bag of old tee shirts also had a few different camouflage prints and some solids so Ralph asked me to make a wall hanging for the game room as well. I wasn’t loving the prints and colors I had left over for this one, but I think it still turned out pretty cool. This one looks very tribal to me.

I also found this cute little gnome house that a friend had made for me years ago. I thought it worked well in my bohemian bedroom.

And finally I have been working my way through a pile of dresses that needed some upcycle love to make them more wearable for me. I haven’t photographed any of the finished projects yet, but here are a few of the dresses I have been altering.

I have the first kaftan dress in two different prints and have altered both in different ways. This one I turned into an open duster similar to my tie dye one but I didn’t add any sleeves. The other one I converted into a long ruana. I am in the process of transforming the middle dress (the black and white ditsy floral print) into a long open duster like the ugly dress transformations I completed in the spring. I also have this same dress in a black ditsy floral that I am converting as well. Both dress are way too big on me and just work better for my personal taste as long dusters. The green polka dot dress is also too big on me so I cut the front of that one open as well and it looks way cuter on me now!

And then there was this floral nightmare. I could not resist the crazy big bold floral print on this dress, but the dress style is utterly horrible on me in addition to being about 5 sizes too big. With much patience and a lot of brain power and frustration, I managed to make this ugly thing pretty darn adorable! I removed the hideous sleeves, converting it into a halter style dress. Then I had to take the sides in about 8 inches without compromising the shape of the dress. It is definitely not perfectly done, but my husband was amazed at the transformation from super ridiculously ugly to a very cute and very wearable halter style maxi sundress. I can’t wait to show you!

I will take proper photos of all the finished projects to share soon. But for now, I must sign off. There have been updates made to WordPress that are really screwing with me this morning or I am experiencing early effects of Mercury retrograde. Mercury doesn’t enter its retrograde phase until August 23, but many Geminis like myself, who are heavily influenced by the communication planet, can start to feel the wonky effects up to 2 weeks before and after the retrograde period begins and ends. So I get an extra long dose of this planetary confusion!

Wonderful idea for these sentimental t-shirts! So bright and happy. I even like Ralph’s wallhanging despite the more drab colors. They work well together. I think that’s the sign of an artist – being able to create something pretty out of whatever materials are available. The post card wall hanging is cool idea. The gnome is adorable! I can’t wait to see your dress alterations. I have a pile of those I need to work on myself.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, my friend! I am currently trying to decide what to do with a giant bin of very colorful socks that I really don’t wear anymore but can’t seem to part with…because who really wants someone else’s old socks?! So they either go in the garbage or I make something else from them. We should definitely set up some time to video chat so we can discuss our current creative projects, share ideas, and maybe help each other out a bit! That one dress alteration fried my brain!

Hi Ellie! Thanks so much! My creativity has been in overdrive lately. I wish my sewing skills were better but they are sufficient for my needs. And I am getting better with each new project. I definitely learn better by trial and error anyway. You should watch a few video tutorials for altering your own clothes. You might find it’s easier than you think!

I love those tie dyed hangings! What a cute idea for making memories from the boys’ outgrown clothes. I can’t wait to see the halter dress trandformation.
